View Full Version : Pulled The Trigger On An XDs Last Night

So after looking for one of these babies for upwards of 6 months I landed one last night!!!!! I almost couldn't sleep I was so excited! I'm hoping to get to the range this afternoon or tomorrow and run a hundred or so rounds through it. I have spent the last hour cleaning it and playing around with it and I have to say I love the way this gun feels in my hand!
After I brought it home the wifey started playing with it and after about 30 minutes of her handling and playing with it she started with the I really like how this feels maybe it should be mine conversation....... I shut that down real quick but we will see what happens, LOL! I might end up with two of these things in my house hold. Here are a few photos of the gun and what it came with. Eventually I will take side by side pictures with my CM9 but I gotta tell you the XDS feels bigger in my hands however there is hardly any size difference between it and my CM9.

Darn nice piece you got there.
Those Croats sure know how to make a good gun. After all, they've been killin' each other off with guns since before Chris Columbus set sail.
Already have a CW45, but wouldn't mind having an XDM 45.

I know I'm going to be looking at the XDS 9mm real close when I get the chance. I'm thinking in the near future of consolidating my poly pistols to just one or two. The XDS 9mm could possibly fill my needs, and the shoes of two or three of them that I currently own. Right now that's just a thought for now,but I'm keeping and open mind about things. :)

I bought an XDs about a month ago and I LOVE it! I also bought two extended mags.,
they hold seven rounds. It's a great little gun and the recoil is not bad at all. My LCR 357
kicks a whole lot more, than this little 45.
Ya know.... I just cannot fathom the justification for the grip safety, except to appease the nouveau-1911 crowd for marketing purposes.
The Kahr seems like its so much less... complicated.
But, there's chocolate and vanilla, to each his own, and congrats!

I really like my XDS. I ran some self defense loads across the chrono a few weeks ago, 40 degrees.
Speer 200gr Gold Dot +P loads, 979 fps, 426 ft-lbs
Federal 230gr HST +P loads, 859fps, 377 ft-lbs
Very Snappy!
Weight comparison:
XDS with 6 rounds weighs 26.2 oz
CM9 with 7 rounds weighs 19.9 oz
Enjoy your new XDS

OK so I got to the range today to put some lead through this bad boy. However on my way to the range I stopped by the gun store with my wife to buy some .45 ammo and I will be darned if I didn't walk out of the gun store with a new gun (Glock 23)! It was totally my wife's fault this time though since it was one she has been wanting! I will post some pics of it later on tonight....lol
OK getting back on track now I put 200 rounds through the XDS and I have to say I love it!!!! The first 30 rounds or so were a bit frustrating as I was grouping my shots but they weren't quite where I wanted them. Once I settled down and adjusted my grip just a bit I was drilling the center of the target at 30 foot. The next hundred rounds went great and I got to the point I was shooting 5 rounds in rapid succession. My wife and my buddy were shooting it also and both of them loved it. My wife was surprised with the fact it kicked less than she thought it would. I said yeah it is like it pushing you instead of being snappy on the front end...... she said she agreed but would describe it more as punching you lol..... she did fine with it considering it is the first. 45 we have ever owned. Overall it lived up to my expectations and I am thrilled with it. Now I am waiting on my holster so I can start carrying it!

I think the surprisingly tame recoil in light, short barreled guns is a matter of physics. The shorter slide has less rotational inertia, so it sends the energy more strait back as a push. I have always found my CM9 comfortable to shoot and I was surprised at the relatively unpleasant recoil of my new Walther PPQ 9mm. Much more of the energy goes into a rotational force on the slide (and the frame) which comes back against the top of my hand and thumb. With the CM9, the force is directed more downward through the grip into the heel of the hand. This must be true with the XDs, as well, as your report and so many others have testified.
The key to pleasant recoil sensations in larger guns is a low bore axis, which your G23 has. And I bet you will find it to be comfortable to shoot, as well. :)

My son has one which I've held alot but haven't had a chance to shoot yet. He likes it and said it shot well.
I'm of course tempted to buy anything that goes bang but was doing well fighting the urge off on the XDS. That picture of the duo tone one with the stainless slide may have ruined my resolve.
It looks much much nicer to me. I'm with CJB, don't grasp the grip safety concept unless it's simply to unglock it or please 1911 fans. Don't see it does any harm.
We'll see how long I can hold out on this one.

Well I caved in and got one....haven't shot it yet but got my Trijicon HD nights sights and 7 round extended mag ordered for it.
I picked one up almost two weeks ago. Had the choice of black or two tone. I got the black one. Also picked up a 7 round magazine. Only 157 rounds through it so far; 150 Federal 230 grain FMJ and 7 Speer GDHP 200 grain +P.
So far I'm very happy with it. Still too early to tell, but I'm hoping this pistol will function and perform as reliably as my PM9.

Thanks, I appreciate it. But... it's $600+, to which I would have to add probably $150-$200 in FFL fees plus shipping, taking the total close to $800. If I am a patient little boy ;) I can get it locally for about $525 in probably another week or three. The difference can buy a LOT of ammo. I guess I'll be mature about it and wait til it comes in. :(

I have a couple of XD's and I don't mind the grip safety at all. I have never found it to be a hindrance of any sort either.....I figure it is one more safety to keep you from accidentally pulling the trigger when pulling it from a holster. I really like the two tone and both of my full size XD's are two tone but I opted for black on black for my conceal carry as I figured it was a little less flashy and I ordered my crossbreed in all black.

My xds works well, too. That or the XDm 45 compact seems to get a lot of carry time from me right now.
The grip safety comes in to play because of the XD design.
The XD triggers are single action, unlike Glock or Kahr, pulling the trigger on the XD does not move the striker at all before firing. Racking the slide does 100% of the striker cocking. The trigger just releases the striker.
So in essence with the XD models, the striker is already fully cocked and the firearm is in a state which I guess is comparable to the 1911 being cocked with the side safety switched off - otherwise known as condition 0.
Because the XD striker is fully cocked there does exist the potential for a hard knock causing the firearm to fire. With the grip safety in the firing sequence mix, the striker can only release when both the grip safety is depressed and trigger is pulled.
On Glocks, Kahrs, S&W MPs and many striker fired types, the trigger is performing two actions when pulled and are designated DAO. Meaning they finish the striker cocking sequence and then release the striker.
However unlike the old "traditional" DA triggers, it does not "fully" cock the striker so you can't fire the gun simply by pulling the trigger like a "traditional" DA. Meaning there is no double-strike capability.
Hope I made sense and cleared up some of the "why" there is a grip safety on the XD models.
With some 1911 in my background, I took to the grip safety like a duck to water. Unlike the 1911, I don't miss having to manually switch the side safety to off and sometimes missing or forgetting to do it though. Imagine there might be some other on here who can relate to that experience.

I did not know that and I'm not sure I'm paying full cash price on the striker being full c0cked. It feels and I always thought it was the same or very similar to the Glock which is very nearly full c0cked anyhow.
Anyhow the thought is enough to splash me with ice water so I'm comfy staying 1911. Been leaning towards staying steel anyhow. This is a good thing.

I think the kimber solo is fully cocked and ready t go. at leat they advertise it as a sicle action striker fired. I never having an xd in my hands cannot speak one way or the utter.
Not sure that xd if all is true would be a choice gun for ol jocko. My glock is hairy enough for me. No wonder gus say it is a very accurate shooter to. Being dannear sngle action takes alot of error out of shootin, when comparing it to a kahr especially. I know I shoot my tuned G19 suer compared t an of my kahrs, so knowing my shootin capabilities with such a gun like the xd, hell Todd Jarrett better run and hide. Just sayin

I forgot to mention, and you probably already saw it, is they use a blade in the trigger like the Glock as an extra safety bit. They call that bit: "Ultra Safety Assurance (USA) Action Trigger System".
So unlike the 1911, having that extra trigger blade piece, In reality it's more like condition 1 without having to remember to swipe any external safety switch, but it's activated passively in the trigger, like the grip safety is activate passively when you grip the handle.
I was trying to relate how it looked externally when I said condition 0.
With the XDS model you don't get a "cocked" indicator on the rear of the slide, but on the other XD models, you do.

The XDS trigger is much more Glock like than any of my other XD's. After looking at my XDS the sear does move the striker rearward about an 1/8 of an inch before the striker is released.

certified106, I checked my xds and concur with what you are seeing. So that blows my single action xds assumption right out of the water for this model
My xdm does not do this, so with what we are seeing the xds has to be double action since it is pulling the striker back some percentage. I take back what I said for the xds action and will leave it out there for the other non xds Springfield models since it still applies for them.
The xds trigger is more Glock like, but with a grip safety. The probably squashes the queasy feelings that Bawanna had for the Glock trigger setup, so now he'll want to get one.

Yeah the XDS trigger system is unique when you compare it to the other XD models. At first I was kind of surprised but when you consider how much it feels like a Glock it makes sense. I will say I love the trigger on my XDS and shoot it great.

For those of you that love the XDS as I do here are some of the things that you may like to get to improve on it a bit. I thought the trigger was a bit too mushie so I order a set of springs from powderriverprecision.net, they make the trigger so much crisp (I just changed the fire spring)....WOW, also they have rubber grips stick-on grips that tames the aggresive cheese grinder that it has, if you get it make sure to wipe it down with denature alcohol first and after you install use a hair dryer..WOW.Also go to www.ndzperformance.com (http://www.ndzperformance.com) and add your own rear slide cover plate to your liking or choose from what they have (personalize it). And I installed XSsights standard, (that is my personal preference) from Brownell.
If I can figure out how to post pics I would, right now I ain't got the time...Live free or die. Enjoy your toys

It's really ironic that for many many years after carrying an officers size 1911 I became uncomfortable with it. Switched to DA/SA autos, etc, just like so many wasn't really warm to that c0cked hammer.
Glock came on the scene and I carried those without thought, just tucked in the belt, no holster, stuffed in a back pack. Safe Action right?
Got to chatting with a detective long ago about this malady and discomfort and he made a wise comparison really.
How do you make sure you don't shoot a Glock? You don't touch the trigger.
How do you make sure you don't shoot a 1911? You don't touch the trigger.
The Glock has a little piece of plastic on a pivot that naturally with your finger allows you to pull it and fire, nothing else.
The 1911 has a thumb safety, and a grip safety that admittedly clears the way naturally just by gripping the gun.
I was immediately OK with a 1911 again and suddenly far more paranoid about the Safe Action.
But your right I still want an XDS and someday, if there are enough days I'll have one too.

It's March 1st, so yes...
I'm thinking I'll pay off my new truck by this summer.
And maybe gun prices will start to come back to reality.
Even many of the high end 1911s have been bought up too.
My SLR-106U I bought a few months ago for $862 is now $1299?!?!?
That's ~50% in a matter of weeks.

I told my wife that i was going to go the whole month of February without buying a gun and it just didn't work out at all!!! In fact telling myself I wouldn't buy a gun actually was so traumatizing I ended up buying two at the end of February (XDS and G23). To justify it a bit I did sell a Sigma....... It totally doesn't help that my wife likes guns as much as I do so she doesn't balance me out at all! I think I may need to go to a gun buyers anonymous meeting, lol

I want to compare a CM45 to an XDs.
CM45 not released yet and no XDs anywhere around here.
Side note, went out this afternoon and shot the CW45, my officers model (sporting it's Bawanna grips) and the wife's Nano. After the two .45's I pulled out the 9mm and all I could think was "those sure are some small bullets."
Another note. 7 round officer size Act-Mags that came with my officers model fit into and work in the CW45 like a charm. Almost the same size too.

After putting my name on a waiting list on Thursday, I figured it would be at least a few weeks before my FFL started getting some shipments of XD-s's, but to my delight, I got a call the next day (yesterday) saying they had one for me. I zipped down there this morning and grabbed it first thing. I also managed to pick up a case of target ammo and some 230 gr Gold Dot's (dealers in my area are limiting ammo sales, especially target ammo) and can't wait to get out to the range!
Thanks to the gun-buying frenzy triggered by the anti-gun idiots, the cost of the gun has gone up almost $100 in just a couple of weeks. When I first talked to the dealer, the black one was $520. When I went to pick it up this morning, it was $600.

I think the stainless ones may be up around $700 now?
Should have jumped earlier.
Enjoy your new gun and don't forget to give us a range report!

Congrats on the XDS! I hope you love yours as much as I love mine! I hear you on the price I ended up paying $575 for mine and they wouldn't budge an inch on the price.

Congrats on the purchase! I'm going to wait for the 9mm version. I did find the xds 45 at my local shop and it felt really nice, looks like a solid piece.

Darn nice piece you got there.
Those Croats sure know how to make a good gun. After all, they've been killin' each other off with guns since before Chris Columbus set sail.
Already have a CW45, but wouldn't mind having an XDM 45.

I went slightly larger. Seeing the XDS compared to the Kahr in size has slightly made me think about going with a 45 XDS over my CM9 but then ammo prices are keeping my CM9 on me as well.

I am really torn, I REALLY like my XDS and REALLY like my MK40. Guess I will have to keep them both.

Nice pistol choice. I am sure you are going to enjoy for many years. The XD series feel good to me and all calibers seem to always work with a wide variety of ammo. I got bit by the bug when the 9 mm XD came out and moved to 40 and 45 after that. Now there are the M's and the S's to collect. If I could get over my revolver fever I have had for 50 years and 1911 addiction I could move on quicker with purchases.

These XDs threads blow.
I do not need a new gun.
If I repeat that three times is it true?

I've never been able to convince myself that I don't need another new gun. It's an affliction. :)

What's recoil? :)

So now that I have my XD-s, I have run into a new question: Will my CM9 ever be my everyday carry again? I suspect that it may not... I'm sure it will get more range time than the XD-s because of the difference in ammo cost, but carry? I think the CM9 may be heading for the reserve list. Does anyone here who owns an XD-s usually carry a CM/PM9 or PM45 instead of the XD-s?

I don't have my own XDS YET. My son has one and I honestly can't see it replacing my PM45. I briefly thought that it might but for my use the PM45 works best for me.
After I shoot the XDS and have more info to go on I might do a complete 180 but for now my PM45 isn't going anyplace.

I think the CM45 is going to win me over with it's price and Kahr trigger.

I haven't decided yet but I kind of doubt it....... I think it will get split pretty evenly between the two.....
