Just inherited one of these guys (picture below). Ordered up a trigger (it's broke) and some replacement nipples (they're pretty banged up).

the friend I inherited it from is going to buy some bullets, powder, wadding, and whatever we need to measure it.

Should be fun.

Does it go bang when you pull the trigger ... 'cause if it does, they'll give it their best shot ... so to speak.

Whats's the caliber that's what will be outlawed!

Neat old gun! I agree that next it will be a caliber ban and the reasoning will be because it's the majority of these calibers that kill people.....

It's a 44. Not sure yet what kinds of projectiles it can use. Obviously round balls, but I don't know if it can handle other bullets.

Also not sure how deep I want to get into this black powder thing.

Sometimes the most expensive hobbies are the ones that start out with something free.

I have a couple that look very similar to that, one almost an exact match. Is that a spanish, Pietro or some such thing written on the side?

I don't have any balls but I have several cans of Triple Seven and a can of another substitute plus a little of the real stuff.

I've never heard of nor shot anything but ball in revolvers.

Rifles of course there are several options.

I've been pondering digging my stuff out for fun, haven't played with any of it for a long long time.

Guess we best stay proficient, might be all we got one of these days. Well not me of course, I'm gonna cowboy up and not give them nothing but outgoing projectiles.

I think it will be a while before they have time to focus on going after black powder. They have alot on their plate right now. They can cut this area off quick by controlling the powder availability.

Scoundrel, you'd better get deep into it. Cap and ball revolvers are subject to chain fires if they aren't properly loaded. A revolver that chain fires can ruin your day not to mention body parts. My Lyman New Model Army .44 cal. looks a lot like your gun. Fun to shoot, but a pain to clean.

I'm very surprised they haven't banned Black Powder yet as an illegal explosive and required an ATF license to buy the stuff....I really think that in a few short years we will be talking about the "good ole days" when we could reload our own ammo....This is an area the Gov can go after freely without any 2nd Amendment issues...Give the Bloody Bastards time to get over the current crap and they will crack down on all ammo or Tax it to the moon!!!

in reading ur post colonel, ur quote of I don't have any balls KINDA GOT ME THINKIN. i HAVE A 5 GALLOON BUCKET OF HORSE BALLS. PRobably in the caliber size of 800 caliber but they could be resized if so desired.. U are more than welcome to them if u pay the postage to get um out west. they are already FDA apaproved, not for reloading purposes but they also make great Mt.osyters to, How would they know the difference even. anyway ur friend wants t ohelp. U have enough horse parts that I have sent u i the past that this could just be the missing balls to a full size Pinto, u know like ur buddy ESMERALDA rides.

Now a quick jocko story. Many years ago in my gun store a young man (yes he was Italian to) came in and said he had a felony record(most Italians I knew did) and knew he could not buy a gun but could he own a black powder pistol like the one Ruger made back then. It was a good question, so I called ATF and run it by them, at first they had no answer and then it was one would say No and anutter would say yes, when finally I got the name of a higher up who told me there was no law agasints a felon from owning a black powder pistil, for after all they are all single shot. That was him comment but when I told him indeed there was many 6 shot black powder revolvers on the market icluded the top notch Ruger model. He said OH, I did not know that, but his answer was still the same. IT WAS LEGAL

I sold the fella a 6 shot Ruger stainless black powder gun.:amflag: so the moral of the story is maybe this, u can't own a J frame with 5 shots but you can own a 45 caliber black powder revolver with 6 shots.. Just sayin

It's a "Pietta 1851 Navy". That makes it a replica, not the "real thing", and it's not in great condition. So that makes it about a $100 gun, maybe. Perhaps a little more once I replace the trigger and nipples.

We can add black powder stuff to our list of things we keep saying we'll go shoot together.

On the other hand, keeping in mind Bawanna's story about that ****** revolver shooting in his days of youth, maybe I can't handle this thing. :)

Chain fires sound nasty, for sure. I'll leave the loading up to my friend, and make him fire it first to see if he got it right.

That's a sound strategy. Makes me proud to be associated with you. I've only witnessed one chain fire event, but one was enough. Luckily only two holes went off and one was aligned with the barrel. Grease over the mouth of the chamber avoids the problem. Pyrodex pistol powder doesn't foul as quickly. Check out this video.

:D

Well, to be fair, the whole thing IS his idea, that's where the gun came from, and I'm putting in the time/effort/expense to fix the action. Since he's providing the supplies, it follows that he'll be responsible for loading procedures. It's a joint venture.

I forwarded him the Hickock45 video.
