i`ve found a place in my pickup that I can strap a .357 where it`s easy to access and can`t be seen from outside the vehicle. My question is this.During the hot summer months, will the heat adversely affect the ammunition in the handgun if it stays in the truck all the time? Your expertise in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

I often wondered about this also. Last summer (in Florida) I kept a full magazine in my Glock 19 in the car. I did make sure to shoot with this magazine at the range once every 3-4 weeks to keep fresh ammo in the car. Never noticed any adverse effects.

You'll find that some powders are temp sensitive - some are hotter when the temp is warm, others colder when the temp is hot.
I haven't found that ammo is exactly....poor performing with various weather conditions, unless it's iffy ammo from the get go. I've kept boxes of junk .22LR in the trunk for about 15 months through various weather, and it had no greater failures than brand new of the same ammo. The good stuff never had a single problem.

Load it up and don't worry about it. It will fire just fine. About the only thing you want to be careful with is extreme temperature changes over and over again. Even then, I'd bet my next paycheck you could dump the rounds as fast as you can fire them with zero problems as far as actually firing. The actual "power/hotness" and POI of the rounds may have changed some, though, due to fluctuations in power characteristics because of the temperature changes.

Thanks to all of you.I suppose that at self defense ranges, the changes in power/POI would be negligible. In .357 mag. I load the weapon with Federal 125 grain JHP.I believe the muzzle velocity is around 1400 fps. but I will check that with a chronograph next week.It probably will be slower with a 2 inch snubbie. Then I`ll check again in August and see what,if any, difference has been made due to the heat.As I have stated before, the summers in central North Carolins can be hellish. The good thing is that nobody dies of thirst because it`s so humid, you can drink the air. Thanks again.
The answer to your question is no...commonly encountered environmental conditions will have no affect at all on your ammunition.

I imagine that factories control the humidity and temperature pretty well when making ammo. And, if they seal the primers and bullets, they are pretty impervious to weather changes. However, if you reload some ammo in your garage during high humidity, I can see where you might have a problem as that ammo contains some moisture that might cause less than optimum performance when the moisture condenses. I don't think that most reloaders seal anything and probably a lot don't worry about environmental conditions. I don't remember any centerfire primers being sealed like most shotgun primers and could be adversely affected.
Good factory ammo seems to last almost forever -- centerfire, anyhow, as long as you store it properly and the cases don't corrode and fail.
I can't believe the age of some lots of military ammo that are being offered by reputable dealers these days... from the 60's! Maybe even earlier.:p

millions of us Southern rednecks can't be wrong.... at least concerning the issue of leaving firearms in a closed vehicle in the summer time. Prior to about 1978, I (like millions of others) left a rifle, and shotgun hanging in the gunrack, in direct sunlight, in the pick-up. Sometimes they would have the same round chambered for weeks at a time between coyote or ferral dog pack sightings on the farm. Never had any hint of a problem, and never even thought about a possible problem. We have a lot of 100+ deg days here, even in the mild climate of NE Texas :D, and even though I no longer carry the long guns in the work truck I often leave a spare snake gun (wheel gun) in the truck and always have several varieties of spare ammo in the glove box. I've never given a single thought to the mythical idea of a round "cooking off" (that has to be some new internet myth), nor have I ever had a round fail to fire that had been left in the truck for many months, or years.
Been there, done that, and still do:)

Not certain I'll know what to do if I catch one but I got me some idea's. Reminds me couple years back the Roller Derby girls had a deal at our high school so I went down to watch. It was a blast. I found me a spot to park and one of the girls come over and said I was in a bad spot, that most crashed right where I was at. Told her that was perfect, and I'd thought of that and I was looking to catch me a roller derby girl. Managed to catch 2, one was a throw back, (border line fell out of an ugly tree) but the other was a cutie. Ma wouldn't let me keep her though, had to turn her lose too.

I truely wish I could as it was a genuine kodak moment. They are firmly engrained in my brain, (dang, I could use that in a poem). I do recall that the cute one was called I Vanna Hurtcha. Probably her game name and not real. In fact she came to the dept here the next day cause our code person picked up all their advertising signs. Thought she had tracked me down and come to run off with me but alas she just wanted her signs back. So much for happy endings in this story.

:) OK, Bawanna. You have now taken this here thread from a gun in the truck. To catching Roller Derby Queens.
And, I thought WYNN was bad !
ALL BOW TO KING BAWANNA :D ( he can make more twist & turns than a Nascar driver at Watkins Glen.)
LOL..............................!!!:D
Am I required to make a speech here? Actually I thought of what you just said and was gonna look back and see what made me jump the tracks. I think Jocko made me do it. And while it's probably an honor to be put in the same category as Wynn, I just think I'm a rookie in comparison. But speaking of Watkins Glen I gotta see if I won that possum barbecue prize with Dietrich, thought I'd hit Charlotte while I was there.
I'll try to align my front end and stay on course here. I think low tire pressure on my left side tire is throwing me off.:2rolleyes::roll::001_huh:
Thanks so much for the King Bawanna thing, gotta a nice ring to it and all. Never been called nothing near that nice before. I'll tie a bandana, got some from a gang here to keep my head from getting all swelled up and know it allish.

Ok, here's the culprit, I was minding my own business when Mr. Jeepster got to talking about foxes on the beach. That's where the rails went awry!
ryoung, congratulations on your senior status. I think a box of monogramed depends is definitely in order.

gosh...I need to stop taking advantage of the opportunity to work a long day and check in here more often. Can't seem to get the whole roller derby thing out of my head now....which brings up a question I've had since I was a kid. Do roller derby chicks have their own teeth, or are they the portable models? Funny thing that roller derby came up. We don't have that particular event in my part of the country, but I remember seeing it on tv as far back as the 1960's. My Mom remembered going to some place in FT Worth (I think) when she was a kid in the 30's to see a roller derby event. Are there rules to roller derby? Is there any point to roller derby other than the catfights? Do roller derby events still take place? Where?
Now... back on topic..... never leave your rifle hanging in the rear window gun rack of your truck facing one direction all the time. At least rotate the direction of the muzzle so as to fade the finish on both sides equally. My Marlin 336 30-30 hung in another guys gun rack for an extended period, and the "sunny side" bleached the wood and faded the bluing...almost eliminated the bluing of the scope on that side. I stripped the wood, hand rubbed 10-12 coats of Danish oil, had the receiver bead blasted (too dinged for "clean blue job") and the barrel and other metal 1500 grit blued. Beautiful completed gun for a well used 1973 model, but I still put the old original Bushnell Sportview scope back on. It has perfect bluing on one side, and almost "in the white" on the other. Still works perfectly, and together with the old Marlin, still shoots 1 MOA at 100 yards from a rest.
Now, what does this have to do with the original point of the thread????
HHHmmmmmm...... I'm gonna go the the beer fridge... I'll get back to you

I gotta slip back off track just for inquiring minds. This was the first time I'd seen roller derby live, watched it on tv in the old days. Yes there are most definitely rules and there were really no cat fights. LOTs of pushing and shoving but not fights, not railings. The best part is there's about 4 or 5 referees and they are skating in the infield right along the girls. And all the girls not playing are sitting in the infield where there is not alot of room. The refs are just flying and going backward and forward and jumping over girls legs that are sitting there. Not a single train wreck. It was a blast to watch, I'd go again given the chance.
Switching back to the truck, good idea on the rifle in the back winda. Keep er even. Course now days a gun in the back winda wouldn't be there long, at least out here.

We used to be able to keep on there, in fact most kids in high school had a rifle or two in the back window during hunting season. The fact that it was illegal for us to do and that no one to a soul said a word about it, well I'm still working on that one. And no this wasn't that long ago.
