View Full Version : Act-Mag works in CW45

FYI, I went out this afternoon shooting and my 7 round officers 1911 Act-Mag will fit and work in my CW45. No modification or anything. It's only 1/4 inch longer and you get 7 rounds.
The Kahr Mag will NOT work in the officer 1911.

I've been using 6 round Officer's model magazines in my CW45 almost from the day that I bought it. Some of them have ti have some very slight filing along the forward lips, but once that's done, they work great at half the price of Kahr magazines. Also, it's really convenient to have my CW45 handle the same full sized magazines that I use in my lightweight Commander.

I would be interested to know if the 7 rnd Chip McCormick Shooting Star mags would work in the CW45. I'm seriously considering a CW45 in the near future, and I have 7-8 CM mags with my Kimber Compact.
Isnt there a really long thread on this already?
Yes there is another thread on this, 33 pages of it. All very informative. I have also been using Officers ACP magazines. After going through all 33 pages it looks like testing in your own pistol is the best way to tell what will work.
All of the following magazines needed to have the tops re-contoured to work in my CW45. I started out with Metalform 6 round mags. They worked quite well and even locked the slide back 90% of the time. But further reading made me believe that the follower needed to be tweaked to not hit the slide or drag on the poly frame. That worked, and so I thought maybe I could bent the lower leg of the follower up a little to improve the lock back. Well I did learn that those followers are a little brittle. Snapped the lower leg right off. I tried a Chip McCormick follower from a 1911 magazine, it fed well, but wouldn't lock back. So I had read that some of the Wilson nylon followers worked, so I ordered a couple of follower and spring kits, #19. When I was ordering I thought I would try a Wilson 6 round that was on sale. The Wilson mag works maybe better than the factory, and is flush. This is the Wilson #609 Service Magazine Plus. And the Wilson follower and spring in the Metalform body works great too. In the other thread one member had good luck with a MecGar magazine, I had no such luck. It feeds fine but only locks back about 50%. Seems that my slide lock tends to walk out from the frame just a little and then the MecGar follower doesn't reach. I think it may be an issue with the screw or the washer holding the slide lock spring.
So I may be ordering more of the Wilson mags and another Wilson follower for the MecGar. But my CW45 has been running great. It was my choice over a Glock 36 and a XDs, and was actually cheaper.

bull, SO the Wilson 609 works 100% for you? Slide lock back and all? I am looking into a few new mags, and don't want to pay 40 something for them, but also would rather not fork out a ton experimenting. This would be welcome news for sure.

I bought a mec-gar yesterday. No luck though. I really wanted that magazine to work.
Yes the Wilson 609 has been working 100% for me. The Wilson nylon follower kits in the Metal form mag bodies has been working 100% also. This is all after contouring the tops. I would have responded sooner, but had problems replying.

Thanks for the tip bull. I picked up a Wilson 609 and after shaping the top, it's flawless. I am going to order up a couple more. I have always liked the quality of the Wilson mags.

I'm using Metalform mags with Kahr spring and follower. I was using the Metalform mags with Wilson spring and follower. The Wilson gave me 7 rounds and locked the slide back when new but got to where slide would not lock back all the time. Works great with Kahr internals and always locks the slide back, only down side is one less round.

So which mags work without any mods whatsoever..."No filing down the top"
no changing out any internals with rework kits....
absolutely no nothing on my part but buy them
Just order the mag
load it up
perfect firing and locks back when empty...?
I just got back my CW45 from Kahr...they had it about 2 weeks, it failed to load the very first round new out of the box and hung up....got off two rounds then sent it back to them I had bought four different mags based on threads here in the forums I will let you all know what I find as soon as I can get to the range...about 25 miles away.

The two rounds I got off were with the factory mag

Kahr mags if you don't want to do anything to them. I had to modify the top of the Metalform mags slightly but it is worth it to me to have a near flush fitting mag for carry.

If it helps any. After just the slightest reshaping of the Wilson 609 top, it works flawless. Maybe 10 minutes of work with the Dremel and several test fits, I am very happy. Ordered up 3 more right away. Not to mention they just look good in the thing.

Shot 350 rounds of 230 gr fmj federal
rotating thru all four mags
The Kahr K625
The Act-Mag 1911 Officers 7 Rd .45 acp # AMO4507PFB
Wilson Combat 1911 Auto Service Mag Plus # 609 (965-000-162WB)
Mec-Gar 1911 Officers 6 Rd .45 acp # MGC04068
The Wilson and Mec-Gar were flush bottom to the gun
Neither ever once locked back the rack on empty
But both fired perfectly out of the package...with only a very few minor
FTF or FTE...maybe 6 rds total out of the 175 combined rds they fired.
The Act-Mag...well what can I say I'm in love....
haven't even checked yet..but if they make a 6rd that will flush up
I'm sold....
I didn't have to do anything...I mean nothing....to go thru all 350+ rds
using all four mags non-stop.....no cutting...not filing....no modifying...
I would assume that now since my CW45 is broken in...I will be very picky
and log in every single shot and "non-shot" that occurs to find out exactly
which mag and under what conditions it misbehaved...and why.
I have to admit....a sexy black flush with the bottom mag waaaay outweighs an extra round....LOL

This guy is amazing...he emailed me non-stop keeping me up to date with
what I was interested in, and updated his web site live for me to order what I asked him to get for me.
So I just asked him to see if he can get me the ACT-MAG 6rd Officers Blued flush mounts for my CW45...based on what his rates have been so far...they could
be as low as $15.95 each...and $6.95 flat rate for as many as you can stuff in the box...wow
I hope he comes thru ...
I searched web wide and man the same thing from anyone else is outrageous and ebay is CRAZY....all the sales for anything to fit Kahr are more than factory msrp....scalpers...and gougers....
I went to the factory web page for the ACT-MAGS I want and they are $21.35 each without adding shipping yet
And from Brownells they are $23.00 and want $14.00 for shipping...
This forum is exactly what we need to look out for us on all this jacked up
price insanity...

When I bought my CW45 the guy told me the Act-mag would work so I bought one...$14.95 and been using it ever since with no issues

Any chance you could try the ACT-MAG follower and spring in one of the flush fitting magazine tubes? I'd be interested to see if they would work reliably that way and what the capacity would be.

Tried putting a spring and follower out of a 7 rnd. ACT-MAG into officers Metalform mag with a welded base and follower would not go in.Leg on the front of follower is too long and I didn't want to modify it since I borrowed it from my wifes gun.Tube on ACT-MAG is 1/4" longer than Metalform tube so I don't think 7 rnds would fit anyway.Don't have one with removable base to try.

OK--ran another 100 rounds thru the pistol (total 250). the Act mags fed perfectly, but of the two, one would not lock the slide back on empty. (The other does). Is this a matter of bending the part of the follower that engages the slide stop up a bit, or is there some other fix? Also, on the last round, occasionally the shell does not fully eject. Drop the mag, open the slide a bit and it falls out thru the mag well. I have not done any mods to the mags at all.

Thanx, yqtszhj. i`ll be ordering a couple real soon. went to the range yesterday with harrylee, got the first 100 rnds. thru. worked great, only a couple of ftf`s, we didn`t notice any marks on the primer/casing, will look closer next time. Talk about live ....
Anyways...
I bought every mag I was curious about and tried them all putting over 350rds nonstop thru them and was well on my way...when the ultimate oops happened...
The rangemaster had just given the ok to clear and move weapons off the firing line...and I was done for the day..when I picked up my new CW45 and
"SWUNG" it around but not holding on tight enough obviously...flew outta my hand and landed on the back left corner of the slide...damaged the slide
so bad...slide was locked back 1/8" and could not rack or even get gun apart.
Pictures of damage at this url:
http://burdick.home.digital.net/ke4ozd/
Oh and don't comment on my dirty gun...just sent 350+ rds and gun could not be broken down to clean .. kinda like getting in a car accident with dirty socks on....
Wow this gun just came back from smiths at Kahr that week and back again
for full replacement of top and to ad insult to injury...had to pay full for it cause pilot error not warranty work. Guess some folks only learn to duck by banging their head over and over....LOL
Gun should be back this week and I'm going up to Factory anyways...
Will post some behind the scenes pictures if they will let me take them....
Daughter graduating and is 20 minutes away from Kahr....(rubbing hands together...oh boy oh boy)...Be back and at firing range again to try out 6rd ACT-MAGS from Gregcote.LLC and see if they will function as smoothly and lock back on empty. You guys keep the fires burning till I get back from Framingham, MA

Has anyone tried a Mag Pack magazine in the CW45?
This one caught my attention because the follower looked closer to the modded follower, it has a Wolff spring, and that ball made me curious so I will give it a try.
The magazine measures 4 1/8" from the top of the feed lips to the base, measured on the rear of the mag. What does the Kahr magazine measure from the feed lips to the top of the base pad?
These magazines are designed to feed practically all .45 ACP CARTRIDGES, with hollow point wadcutter or other special bullet shapes. Laser welded base plate. The carbon steel magazines are very strong, recommended for competition use.
For the best release of the cartridge, the magazine lips are highly detailed with a DIMPLE for easy insertion past the magazine catch.
The FOLLOWER is dished out to help rigidly position the round until it leaves the magazine. It has a raised portion with a steel ball to prevent wear, which locks with the extract or groove of the first cartridge to be loaded and holds it properly until the slide strips it.
The SPRING is manufactured by WC WOLFF CO. to resist fatigue even if the magazine is stored fully loaded for long periods of time.http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb374/DougGuy/Kahr%20CW45/MagPack7rd_zpsd0000595.jpg (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/DougGuy/media/Kahr%20CW45/MagPack7rd_zpsd0000595.jpg.html)

I used a Chip McCormick Match Grade mag with a little dremel work on either side just forward of the lips and the notch also. Just take a little off and try it frequently until it locks and the slide works correctly. Have run some rounds through it with 0 FTE and 0 FTF but it doesn't lock the slide back after last round being the only drawback. Still using original spring and follower though...not sure if changing that will change the lock back issue.

Super....I am going to try and head up to range and fire my CW45 just got back from Kahr and put a Houge Handall Jr on it tonight .... wow how wonderful....like night and day difference...no more blisters from that checkering...fit perfectly....I bought two and only opened one, I tried it on my kel-tec p11 first.....not good...made it too fat in the grip...but the CW45 was so thin to begin with...it turned it into a custom fit for me...

Just stopped in at the local indoor range Saturday, took my CW45, my Kel-Tec P11, and rented a Glock (cause I've never fired one). Glock spooked me with no safety like my other two pistols but only about an 1/8th inch trigger pull then bang....The Kel-Tec P11 and the CW45 shot every bit as accurate as the Glock. At 20 Ft there was almost no red left in the bullseye.
I took that CW45 and walked it right thru every number on that target at will.
So my CW45 is up to 400 rounds..and counting
I have 500 rounds for next range trip....all good stuff commercial 230 gr
I am shouting to the roof tops that everyone should at least try a houge handall jr on their Kahr's....wow so nice...and what a cheap mod. $8.00
The emery cloth to smooth off the checkering cost more than that....hahaha
I got so caught up at how accurate the CW45 was firing that I forgot to try my 7rd mag springs and followers in the 6rd flush mag like someone here asked me to do...next time hopefully

Is anyone using the same mags, modified or not, in both a CW45 and a 1911 - say a Colt Gunsite CCO, a Sig C3 or one of the many from Kimber? When I bought a C3 a few years ago, I sorted through quite a few mags, mixing and matching followers, etc., to find about ten that work reliably with both practice and carry rounds. I like my new CW 45, but not well enough to risk any mods to my competent 1911 mags.

Just received 2 act-mag 6 round officer mags. After a few minutes shaping the feed lips. I will be really surprised if they don't lock the slide back. The follower engages the slide stop really well. I just got the CW45 a week ago. Haven't shot it yet been trying to round up 200 break in rounds. I bought it to be my EDC gun. I have pics but can't figure out how to post them.

I have seen some very credible folks in this thread but it seems like the same old questions keep popping up:
I have in fact purchased every single mag I thought might work based on all the input in this entire thread. The only one that I found I would risk my life
on was the ACT-MAG 7rd mag and maybe the Kahr original that came with the gun. But there are several folks out there that are carrying, using, and depending on other mags...If you are using a 6rd or 7rd mag with a flush fit bottom I would appreciate you joining in here and letting me and everyone else know what made you choose what you are currently using. And if anything (no matter how much work or how weird) modification was needed
please go into detail and tell us. People here really want to know what you did...not just "Oh I did something a little bit until it worked"...wow!!!

I use modified Officer's magazines with Kahr internals.
Reason: I was looking for a magazine that would fit closer to the frame than the Kahr magazines (think shorter grip without a grip chop). Officer's mags give me this fit. Kahr internals ensure that the slide locks back after the last round is fired.
How: What I did is detailed here (to include photos): http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?p=34654
Results: I have magazines that fit nearly flush, have welded base plates (vice plastic), that don't touch the slide or extractor, feed reliably (nary a problem), and lock the slide back.

That's about it; one thing I should mention is that with the Kahr internals installed capacity is 6 rounds. If you don't carry a spare magazine, then the slide locking back is not really a concern so you could use the Metalform follower and spring for 7 rd. capacity.

Then had to pinch close feed lips back closed tighter...
(Follower actually was ejected straight up thru feed ramp area at empty..
for a second I thought wow I got it to work)
So if you want a blued, flush, mag that works right out of the box and locks back rail on empty.
You will either figure out exactly what mechanism is triggering the lock back on empty or spend extra money on a set of kahr spring follower internals to put in a nice flush, blued Mec Gar 6 rounder that works perfectly out of the box without any cutting but will not lock back rail on empty.

ACT-MAG 1911 Officer 6 round magazines do not work in Kahr CW45
Had to cut and file off high humps at top to make it insert and stay inserted into gun
Fired 50 rounds thru it and it never locked back the rail on empty ever.
The best mag so far out of the box for a Kahr CW45 is the Act-Mag 1911 Officers 7 Rd .45 acp # AMO4507PFB
it fires and feeds perfectly out of the box and locks back the rail on empty...it just is not flush on the bottom.
or
The Mec-Gar 1911 Officers 6 Rd .45 acp # MGC04068
which feeds perfectly right out of the box, is blued, and flush but never locks back the rail on empty.
Some folks have gotten everything we are looking for to work but spent alot of money by swapping around
follower/spring internals from Kahr into other than Kahr mags....will probably look into at least trying that...
but this is the latest news on Kahr mags from the front lines...of experimentation...tnx

Maybe a miracle will happen at Kahr and someone will do something you never know in a competitive world...but with the feeding frenzy out there for anything firearms...guess we will just wait and see.

Have been following these posts for two years and i am surprised we haven't found a manufacturer who will just start producing mags that are flush fit and have seven rounds. With all of us out here in the community is there anyone who knows someone who actually manufactures Mags? It sure would be great if someone would just get it done so Greg doesn't have to keep responding to the same questions over and over :)
No, sorry i don't have such a connection :(

Old thread I know.....is the only reason folks don't just use Kahr's OEM CW45 6 round magazines the cost? I am not that interested in getting 7 rounds, but I do want magazines that fit flush, or at least have no "gap", and that WORK. That latter point is the most important to me: I want the magazine to work - lock in place when put into the grip, feed reliably, and hold the slide open on the last round. If the Kahr OEM magazines do that, I can afford paying twice what the after market magazines cost; I only need to buy 2 more than come with the pistol.
