everybody:

I am having a problem with my Walther PPS. I am stumped and thought posting on this forum and getting the brain power of all of you together, you might give me some suggestions. I respect the knowledge everyone on this forum has about nearly all firearms.

My PPS has been flawless until about last month, then I started having many failures to extract. It is not ammo specific, failures with gold dots, federal, winchester, etc. The extractor seems to just not grab the fired casing, the slide moves rearward, strips another round off the magazine and pushes it against the empty case still in the chamber. It appears to be totally random and can happen at just about any time.

I thought there might be some trash under the extractor not allowing it to fully seat against the case lip, so I took it out and thoroughly cleaned everything. Extractor appears undamaged .

I am at a loss why an apparently simple part like this can suddenly "go bad".

Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks

Could be a bad extractor or weak extractor spring. Could also be a rough or dirty chamber.

Clean the chamber really really really good. If that doesn't fix it go with muggsy's extractor suggestions. Polish the chamber to make sure it's clean and slick. Just my thoughts.

what should I use to polish the chamber?

I've never had FTE issues with a gun.
When a normally reliable gun starts misbehaving?
I usually replace the RSA strait up and see if that solves the problem.
Reading through the Walter PPS forum may shed some light on things too.

Good Luck

Send it back to the mothership.

I agree, it could be just some dirt buildup around the extractor or a week spring.

Thanks everybody, I have also read a lot on the Walther forum and posted over there too. Pretty much everyone has said the same thing. Only problem I am having is trying to find a new extractor, they seem to be out of stock.

A decent gunsmith should be able to get a little extra life out of the original extractor by stoning it.

You never really mentioned how many rounds you have through the pistol?
So just by chance and figuring your the average shooter I'm going with a good overall detailed cleaning (including the Mag internals.)will fix your problems. I've bought quite a few used pistol in the past and I'm not always to quick to blame worn parts for many of the problems with todays pistols. That is,Unless they've had the hell shot out of them. Especially good quality named brand pistols. Just my humble and frugal opinion.:D
