Mod Mag for Less Rounds - How

Looks pretty certain that here in Connecticut we'll be going to 10 round max magazine capacity. There is no way the Republicans can stop it - we'll have new "assault rifle" and mag capacity laws. :(

The proposed Democrat & Governor's law include language to restrict mag capacity but appears to allow modifying an existing mag to restrict its +10 capacity to 10 rounds. How could I go about doing this without compromising the reliability of the mag or making the change permanent? Would it be as simple as fashioning a wooden plug that fits just inside the mag spring?

A wooden plug should work fine for what you want....BUT I'd be very cautious as far as what they expect for a modification. I would find an easily reversible modification unacceptable in their eyes. I could be wrong about that but I would suspect they're looking for a permanent change, something that if it ever came down to it, they wouldn't be able to manipulate the magazine and force in 11 rounds...

I would wait until the law actually passes before I would worry about how to modify your mag. In some cases they may "grandfather" existing mags, or they will come out with a definition of what is acceptable. It is my understanding in NY 10 round mags are allowed but may contain only 7 loaded rounds. VOTE THE BASTARDS OUT OF OFFICE. I live in MN, and so far the over 1000 e-mail letters of mine, and hundreds of thousands from others, is working. If you have a gun rights group organized in your State have them write a proposal that would be acceptable to both sides. That is working for us in my state. If that fails, Tell them you are going to do it, and VOTE THE BASTARDS OUT OF OFFICE.

There's usually enough space front to rear in a magazine that you could use an adhesive to attach a shim to the back wall of the magazine. Make the shim about the same thickness as the the follower is at the rear and whatever height you need to limit the follower's travel to the required magazine capacity.

There is a video on YouTube that I ran across awhile back when I was watching reviews of the CZ P01/SP01 and he was doing just that (in CA) to avoid paying a fortune for CZ factory mags. He had orderd cheaper MecGar "repair kits" that were legal to order in CA but were in essence most of the parts for a full high capacity mag from what I could tell in the video. Anyhoo...he fashioned a copper base and upright plug that was exactly what you described doing w/ wood.

He stated something similar about permanent vs reversible (like JustinN was alluding to) that made me think, ummm, no thanks.

I don't think I'd chance it. Sell (...or <cough, cough> bury them) your hi caps and get some legal ones. If the particular manuf in question produces conversion kits, and your state will consider that acceptable, then great, easy and hopefully cheaper solution.

Mass exodus from these states would solve a lot of problems. Suddenly, there aren't enough workers, the state's economy collapses, and they're overrun with criminals since all the good guy gun owners left.

I hope the gun manufacturers DON'T scramble to make 7 round mags. A big "**** you" to the new slave states. Complete inavailability of liberal-compliant magazines will force gun owners to, a) demand the repeal of these outrageous laws, and/or, b) break the law, get caught with evil 8+ round mags, and take it all the way to the supreme court.

Yes, will have to wait for the exact wording to see whether a non-permanent mod would be legal. The Governor's and the Democrat's proposal (or whatever you call it) will NOT allow grandfathering. As I read it in a local paper sell, mod or turn over to the police by October. BTW, like that tab idea.

I'm wiling to book to another state but for a number of very understandable reasons (kids, family, friends, church, etc.) my wife, right now anyway, is not ready for a move.

Oh, could be worse there was an early proposal for two rounds max and look at NY with 7 rounds max.

As I see it, that's already happened in Ct.
I left when when they instituted the state income tax( thanks Lowel).

Most industry has left, with the major cities hollow shells of what they once were, surrounded by ghettos, and every time I go back I see more and more blight and run down homes.

Unbelievably, there is still a lot of the firearms industry headquartered there. Colt, Mossberg, Stag, OKay. Not sure if Ruger and Winchester still have presence there or not. I picked up a PTR-91 at the gun show last weekend and learned they are made a couple miles from where I used to live in Bristol.

Then you've got S&W (and Kahr of course) in Mass., Springfield and ArmaLite in IL, Beretta in MD, Remington in NY. Just think what would happen if all the gun companies pulled their tax dollars out of liberal states and moved to the land of the free!

If you have to permantly alter your mags to only accept 10 rounds, and don't want to do that, you can buy Kalifornia legal 10 round mags, and bury your standard capacity mags someplace.

Colt is still there because of government contracts, and any others still left in gun valley are either owned by someone else or struggling to survive.
No one that worked in the Ruger factory in Southport could afford to live anywhere near the plant, back in the 90s, and part of the reason Bill Ruger built a plant in NH (he summered there) and a plant in AZ (he wintered there).
I'm no longer up on the gun industry, but know whoever owns Remington has been buying up the struggling companies more for their names and if they continue production, with or without moving the operation, the quality suffers.

I spent some time working in manufacturing and watched many companies, in different industries, become more and more top heavy with most additional non producing employees hired to track and administer all the new government requirements/compliances/regulations.
The last being a defense contractor, while the manufacturing was done in a plant built in 1962 and never updated, with a 5 story office tower built in the parking lot in 1995, and another 5 story office tower finished the year I left, 2005.

Keep in mind, none of those shiny asses (1) ever even touched any hardware or product, and I was "encouraged" to work faster and ever faster to cover the added overhead.

(1) shiny ass is an old term for people who sat down all day and the ass of there pants became shiny.
The term is no longer appropriate since no one uses wooden office chairs anymore, and pants do not become shiny from upholstered chairs:D

I'd just buy new legal magazines and load the illegal ones up with SD ammo, mark them and put them somewhere safe that I could get to them if I needed them. If you're overly concerned about having them, then hide them in the attic or something. No way I'd part with or permanently modify them, illegal or not; the bastards can go pound sand.

The laws could be changed in the future...but not likely in CT unless someone with $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ challenges the law
