unless his point is that a law abiding citizen can legally purchase a semi automatic rifle after a background check.

(CNN) – Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords and an outspoken advocate for new gun control measures, purchased an AR-15 assault rifle in Tucson recently as a demonstration of what he says are unobtrusive background checks.
The retired space shuttle commander wrote on his Facebook page he would turn in the weapon – which he said he hadn't yet obtained - to the city's police department.
"Looks like the judiciary committee will vote on background checks next week," Kelly wrote, referring to the Senate panel where gun control legislation is up for a vote this week.
"I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a 45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only takes a matter of minutes," he continued.
Later, on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," Kelly said it was "important for me to have firsthand knowledge about how easy it is or difficult it is to buy a weapon like that."
In his Facebook message about the AR-15 purchase, Kelly wrote it was "scary to think of people buying guns like these without a background check at a gun show or the Internet.
"We really need to close the gun show and private seller loop hole," he concluded.
He added on CNN that he was "looking forward at some point to buying a gun at a gun show, and also possibly selling a gun."
I wonder what he paid, that's the real "crime" these days

Completely stupid! What exactly did it prove other than he is guilty of breaking the law! Last time I checked you have to sign your name saying that you are purchasing he gun for yourself and no one else!

It's his own personal "fast and furious" crusade.
I'm glad the debate has started to focus on mental health issues but that's going to become a pretty judgmental issue as well. What makes you unstable? The anti-gun people would probably like "wanting to own a gun" classified as a mental issue.

His wife was shot with a Glock, not an AR. IIRC, he also owns a Glock already.
I fail to see the point he was making.

He is lying or just stupid.
Legally buying and passing a background check to buy a firearm proves.... nothing!
He just got busted buying what he thinks you and I should not be allowed to own, but an elitist hypocrite like himself can. Then made up a lame story to try to cover his ass.
Didn't work, check out his FB page. LOVE these comments LoL

Maybe the guy was put off his rocker by the attack on his wife. His actions re the AR just don't pass the smell test for logic, reason, and common sense.

This was not an accident, nor did he get caught. This was staged. A liar yes, a hypocrite absolutely, but this is the work of his puppet masters.

I'm beginning to rethink this issue. What Kelly just proved is that background check are totally meaningless when even an idiot like him can buy an AR-15.

Wow, he talks about it as a "plan" like it was some brilliant military maneuver.
I really don't understand the justification behind turning it in to the police department, and I really wonder what in .45 he bought that isn't more "deadly" than the glock 19 that that psycho used.
"It's easy to buy an assault weapon, they are readily available, and they shouldn't be"
He is going through this BS for the same reason that I keep watching the news and writing my state reps, to know what the opposite side of the argument is up to. It's important to stay educated.
The .45, well that's not as deadly as an AR.

Mark Kelly's 'AR-15 Stunt' Provokes Giffords Photo Leak
2109 36 30.9K
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mark Kelly's campaign against "assault weapons" such as the AR-15 rifle has sparked a local backlash.
On March 13, a Tucson, Arizona radio host published a photograph of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords holding an AR-15 rifle at a gun range. Giffords has since confirmed that the photograph is authentic.
James T. Harris, blogging at the website of "101.4 FM The Truth," wrote:
What is wrong with this picture? Absolutely nothing, and prior to the aggressive progressive opportunistic fear mongering in the wake of Sandy Hook, this picture would have raised no eyebrows and garnered little public attention.
However, in response to the exploitative political scheming of Mark Kelly, persons connected to Congresswoman Giffords released this photo in response to what they perceived to be her husband’s hypocrisy.
Subsequently, Breitbart News confirmed the authenticity of the image through law enforcement sources in Arizona, and obtained a copy of the photograph from a source who requested anonymity.
The latter source was present when the photograph was taken, and said that Giffords had requested it for campaign purposes during October 2010.
According to the source, the image sent to Breitbart News was cropped to protect the identity of the person on the right-hand side of the original photograph (to Giffords's left).
The source, who is a member of the law enforcement community, told Breitbart News:
"We were told she wanted to toughen her image. She asked to come out and she wanted to shoot a rifle. She had one of our guys out there to show her how to shoot an AR-15."

He is lying or just stupid.
Both. He's lying about the rifle and he doesn't appear to be a bright bulb.

Someone tell me why this isn't a felony, being a "straw purchase".

Why do you consider it a straw purchase?
I don't see what his logic is myself. He didn't even take possession of the rifle at the time? Why not. Shouldn't have to wait on that. Here I wouldn't have to wait on the 45 either. Call, get a nics number and walk way.
Background check is completed. I don't get it.

Why do you consider it a straw purchase?
His PAC, Americans for Responsible Solutions put out a statement that he didn't purchase the rifle for himself but for someone else. That is a felony if true. if not then his PAC is not truthful.

Didn't note that, I thought he said he just bought it and was gonna turn it into the police.
I'm supposed to be suspended for 5 days, pretend you didn't see this.

Looks like the gun shop where Mark Kelly wanted to straw purchase his AR15 has decided not to sell it to him after all...Diamondback Police Supply owner Doug MacKinlay questioned the intent of Kelly's purchase and what it might mean for his business....MacKinlay said the rifle will be donated to the Arizona Tactical Officers Association rather than deliver it to Mr. Kelly....
Kudos to Doug MacKinlay for having the wisdom and the stones to stand up to this kind of liberal media slight of hand trick and Thumbs down to that two faced Mark Kelly for trying to show his ass and having his whole stinking charade shoved back in his face!!!....

As usual, an Anti breaks the law and gets away with it using the "just making a point" excuse. This just infuriates me. This situation would never happen if the buyer was a pro-gun conservative. Say buying marijuana at a "medical" supply place to show how easy that is. The media would be outraged and demand prosecution.
