Does anybody have or have owned a 3" 1911 and a Walther PPK? I was curious to know if there are any advantages of the PPK for concealed carry over a 3" 1911 besides a couple ounces weight difference? I have a 3" 1911 and I just don't know if it would feel any different carrying a PPK which I am considering buying.
Thanks in advance.

Dont have a PPK currently, but... the PPK have had in the past. The PPK is much better at carry than any 1911 - 3" or not.

I currently have a 3.5" 1911, and its my "spare" carry. The Kahr PM45 is the EDC.

That all said - I still prefer a 45ACP to any .380 auto

1911's are HEAVY.

This could turn into a very long discussion. My quick opinions....First, you're comparing apple and watermelons. Second, PPKs were excellent carry guns for their time but are too everything by today's standards....too heavy/too big for the caliber/too hard trigger pull/too underpowered. Third, a 3" 1911, assuming you're talking .45ACP, makes no sense. The barrel's too short for the caliber, the short slide adds nothing in the way of concealment ability, and the short action/timing gets critical to the detriment of reliability.

Yes, I've owned both. My only excuse for the 3 inch 1911 Kimber is that it was my wife's idea. And it's one of the first I'm gonna put up for sale in the near future.

I would carry neither given a choice, but would certainly much prefer the 1911 over the PPK.

1911's are HEAVY.

Not necessarily compared to a PPK. I'd bet his 3" is built on a lw frame.

Ya my 3" 1911 is aluminum and weighs 25oz empty and I thought the PPK was like 22oz empty.

But a P series or PM series in any caliber is lighter than both of them. I just have to ask why? I'd have to just totally despise a Kahr or any number of other light carry pieces to consider a 22oz .380 or a 25oz 1911 w/ limited capacity.

I do have a Kahr PM40, but I like to switch it up a bit from time to time.

I like to switch up too. Dan Wesson 1911, Ruger 1911, Desert Eagle 1911, Para Ordnance 1911, always with a PM 45 on the ankle.

There's something common here and I can't quite put my finger on it. Oh, all 45's.

If you want a small light .380 get a Kahr P380 or CW 380. You're no James Bond and this ain't no movie. :)

I see another pattern too, 1911, 1911, 1911, 1911...

I will say I'm becoming more .45 myself. Just nothing like shooting those big fat bullets.

After owning a PPK/S, I cannot understanding why a serious shooter would buy one today. Yes, PPKs are sexy, full of nostagia and have great classic lines. But as shooters, they were designed with useless sights, an awful 14-16 pound trigger, a safety that hard to release, a slide that sits too low and easily bites big hands if you are not careful, and is not particularly reliable without a bit of work. (I don't recall, but I am not sure they are "drop safe" if the safety lever is in the "fire" postion.)

The real problem is that today, there are so many better choices. For example, the Kahr K9 weighs within an ounce or two of the PPK, shoots 9mm vs 380, is far more accurate, more egonomic, and not fussy with ammunition. The world has moved on since Carl Walther designed his classic piece.

Done said this before and I be sayin' it again....not that it matters. My most preferred carry arm of all time is my decades old, custom, lw Officers ACP.

I almost never carry that gun concealed however, at least not outside of winter, because thingys like my PM9 are just more practical. And, an older Walther PP series is to be treasured as a functional, shootable piece of nostalgia. But as a daily driver it's as obsolete as '55 Chevy.

Have you considered a Freedom Arms belt buckle .22 short?

1911's are HEAVY.

Not all of them. I have two 3" 45's that weigh 22 [lighter than my MK40] and 25 ozs respectively, a 4.25 inch at 29 ozs, and a full size at 30 ozs. Obviously, all have aluminum frames. Ironically, the heaviest 1911 I own and also my heaviest pistol is a all SS 3.5 inch at 32 ozs.

My heaviest are a Colt Combat Commander in Stainless and a Springfield Tactical TRP both at 35 oz w/o mag. Lightest would be a 3" Kimber at 22.5. Heretically, I don't own any Government Model 1911's any more......haven't for many years.

What kind of 3" Kimber do you have?

Personally I would carry neither, but if I had to pick one I would choose the 1911. The ppk is nothing more than a collectors gun for nostalgia. In fact, if not for 007 I doubt they would still be in production today. I can see no reason to carry a gun that heavy, that underpowered, with bad ergos and trigger. If you want to carry a Walther go with a pps. Or better yet a Kahr.

I'm a big fan of full size 1911's, but not a fan at all of the smaller models. I carry mine at times, but it's never been and all day carry. PPK's are sexy looking but that's about it. There is way to many better choices out there these days to even consider carrying one of them. I'll keep my PM9 as my EDC pistol.

My Para PDA 45 gets big and heavy.....it is only 24 ounces empty.

3.0" 1911s are notorious for not running reliably.
I've never owned or shot one personally.
Did shoot a Walther PPK about 15 years ago.
And it was less than impressive.
Seemed to kick hard for a small caliber gun.
And is the only auto to bite my hand while shooting.

IMHO - there are endless better choices for carry that either of those two.

I thought for a second, b/c of the angle of the screen, that the keltec (that's a keltec correct?) was not green.

...but then I moved my head...
