View Full Version : Hello from a Grumpy Old Guy

I just bought a CW45 to carry and thought I'd better get with the program, so I joined the forum.

I'm in my early sixties and retired last year. I'm a Christian, a Vet, cancer survivor, long time shooter and tinkerer on firearms.

I've carried a commander size 1911 for years, but wanted to go to something a bit smaller and lighter. I carry IWB and wanted something slim.

I'm a great proponent of big, fat, slow bullets and wanted to stay with the .45ACP round. My search led me to a CW45 today and I'm ready to hit the range and break it in.

So, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :blah:

Well your in good company around here, a whole passel of grumpy old guys around here, some older than others and some grumpier than others too.

I'm a follower of fat heavy bullets too.

Glad you found us, hope you find our little oasis appealing.

Watch out for Jocko, he's been off his meds and he likes tiny little fast bullets.
Course if your into horses he's a great guy to piss off on a regular basis.

I know this to be true.

Gog, how did you ever get that old?!?!?!? There's a bunch of us old'uns around long in the tooth with short memories, so don't be offended if one of them calls you god. He and I are old friends so I'm not liable to get confused but that Jocko fella, well he's a bit different but Bawanna let's him hang out so who am I to complain.

Just what we need, another young guy pretending to be old ... and retired already no less.

I may not be that old, but with the arthritis, cervical degeneration and lower back problems from years as a carpenter, I sure feel old.

When I get up in the morning, some parts take a bit longer to wake up than others. ;)

Welcome to the forum, GOG. You'll fit right in. Here's a list of info and links that might be helpful:

Welcome to the Kahrtalk forum supported by K a h r Arms.
Here are a few essential links and things to do BEFORE you take your new pistol to the range, and ESPECIALLY BEFORE taking it apart and trying to re-assemble it! The Kahr is a different design… 6-7 unique patents cover the Kahrs. I’m not trying to imply that you don’t know anything about guns, but many don’t know anything about the Kahrs and some of the things you can do to damage or cause malfunctions of your new, or new-to-you Kahr pistol.

First, if you don’t have a manual, yet, or one didn’t come with your pistol, you can view it and/or download the pdf file here:
http://www.kahr.com/PDF/kahrmanual.pdf

Please watch one of these videos FIRST! These videos can point out possible problem areas and emphasize correct procedures!
Take down and re-assembly videos:
T, TP, CW, P, & PM/CM Series:

K series:
http://www.kahr.com/Pistols/Kahr-K9-Elite.asp
There are many links on fixing problems listed in several places… under the New Member or Kahr Tech sub-forums.

A very handy one is the Kahr Lubrication Diagram:
http://kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?t=14750
Many of your questions can be answered in these areas and you can learn how your Kahr works and not damage it with improper handling.

Another great resource for information on Kahrs... Archives of Magazine and Internet Reviews for Kahr pistols by industry experts. They test these pistols and report on their views and the ammo they tested in it. This is a good way to find ammo that might fit your needs along with accuracy and feeding in the pistol... usually from a rest with velocity and energy, as well as penetration and expansion sometimes... very informational.

Frequently asked questions: http://www.kahr.com/faq.asp?

One very important bit of advice: Hold the Kahr pistol firmly when firing OR CHAMBERING a round. These compact pistols need all of the force they can get from the slide to get a round into the chamber successfully. If you don't hold the pistol firmly, part of the needed momentum is transferred to MOVING THE PISTOL and the top round will DIVE and jam into the right side of the feed ramp. The weak hand, over hand rack method gives the best grip and a firm rack will give you the best chance at chambering a round.

Use the weak hand fingers over the slide(clear of the ejection port), thumb along the slide and pointing to the rear. Use the gun hand to simultaneously firmly push the gun as you give a vigorous rack with the weak hand and cleanly release the slide as it reaches the rear limit and is "snatched" from the weak hand. This approximates a real rack from firing and beats the slide release method WHEN executed properly. Much more strength can be exerted when this is done closer to the body.

Here's a video on that. The first part is what I'm talking about:

There are many helpful members here most of the time who might be able to help you, but as anywhere, there are many opinions and not all are correct. Be mindful of this before doing anything drastic to modify your pistol!

PS: I keep thinking of stuff to add and help new members... and am trying to cover most of the popular subjects. Yes, it's repetitious to many, but possibly not to all new members. This approach is easier than having to look up every tidbit for each new member or question that arises. :)

By the time they reach retirement age, they're smart enough to get out of Jersey.

And a fine story it is. Anyone who likes 1911's can't be all bad, or maybe he can. Just sayin. I was once told that .45's were fer fat bald headed old men. after I shot mine they changed that to fat, bald headed, dangerous, old men. Welcome aboard.

Most old men got to be old men by not fokkin with any old men. Too old to fight, too, crippled to run, but we can still do 5# curls with our trigger fingers. Just sayin. :)

I'm hoping to get old enough, first. That's a major accomplishment in itself!

Welcome! You'll find a home among friends here, GOG. :) You chose a really fine 45 carry pistol in the CW45. If you like carrying on the waist, there just isn't anything thinner or more comfortable to carry. And doesn't it feel good in the hand? :D

They are accurate shooters, but not intended to be target pistols. The l-l-o-o-o-n-g smooth trigger pull takes some time to master, although if you are accustomed to DA revolvers the adjustment is easy. Practice a smooth continuous stroke, purposely not trying to anticipate when it will fire because it doesn't give you a clue. And like a revolver, let the trigger release fully to reset.

Most of us have gotten a 3-pack of 5 pound striker springs from Wolff's (http://www.gunsprings.com/index.cfm?page=items&cID=1&mID=29#188), who make all of the Kahr springs. It will lighten the trigger up about a pound and won't produce light strikes. One of the stickies in the Kahr-Tech section tells you how to detail strip the slide, including how to make a striker spring retention tool out of a coat hanger. You won't ever need to replace the spring again, but you can use the other 2 for your other Kahrs! ;) In fact, they are scheduled to release the CM45 this fall - just like the PM45, but bargain priced like your CW45.

Welcome from a relatively new GOM here @ Ktalk, is that a new one? "GOM=Grumpy Old Man" or not?

Anyway, I'd like to say "thanks" but I hesitate....yet to own a .45. I Like the concept of BIG & slow for the effect. But the 1911 platform has me turned off. At least it did until I fondled one with some thin aftermarket stocks that my smaller hands liked.

Well, now you've gone and dun it....gotta find a 45 Kahr to try, dang! :D

I swear; I come to this site to learn, share, and for the laughs; great humor here. There's also a radio call in show called "Cartalk" it's a hoot also.

Just keep laughing and learnin'.

Be well,
hangdog
