My local gun shop has a new Marlin 795 for $175. My father in law has really been wanting a .22 rifle (it'll be his first gun). He absolutely loves my 10/22, but those are a bit hard to come by right now. He is interested in the 795 when I told him about it, so I'm almost tempted to go buy it and then if he wants it, sell it to him...and if not just keep it.

Everything I've looked up has been good on them, a lot of comparisons that seem they're close to the 10/22 quality wise, but more accuracy than the 10/22.....Anyone have any experience or input on them?

The $175 seems a decent price right now, compared to what I've found. I saw a year or so ago Dick's was selling them for closer to $100....but that doesn't seem a price I can find anywhere.

Thanks!

If that rifle is as good as it reads that sounds like a great rifle for the money. If I didn't already have a 10/22 and I was looking for a Semi auto 22 I'd certainly be looking at one of those. Having said that though and being over the top of the hill myself I found that I also enjoy shooting other style 22 caliber rifles just as much as I do my 10/22. On the top of that list of non semi auto 22's would be my recently purchased Henry Lever action 22 H001.
They are just so good lucking and so much fun to shoot. They run about $300 +/- and are built to last a lifetime, and are also backed by a great company. I looked at them for a long time before I bought one. My only regret about buying one is I wish i would not have waited so long.
Just a thought...........

I bought a winchester 190 back around 1970.
I shot thousands of plinkers thru it hunted with it and for the first time ever, last week actually took it apart and cleaned it! Now that says something! It never failed to fire, ever. Don't ask what I paid for it but it was under $100, as that was a lot of money in those days...

It was not long ago that some big box stores had them selling for 125 dollars after a marlin 50 dollar rebate. The marlin 60 is the same internaly with a 15 shoot tube mag for a few dolars more and no mag to keep up with and a wood stock. probably can't find any but heres a basspro add- http://www.basspro.com/Marlin-60-22LR-Rifle/product/10217878/

The795 and 60 do need a spring kit to help on there heavy trigger pull but tend to be much more accurate than a 10/22 is.

Check at your nearest store.

I handled it. It's a pretty nice little gun....the only thing I don't like about it is the dovetailed receiver. I don't like 3/8" mounts/22 rings and 22 scopes. I want to be able to put a nicer "regular" scope on it....how does something like this (http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Leapers_Accushot_1_Pc_Mount_w_1_Rings_3_8_Dovetail/805) work on rimfire gun? Will it hold zero and be ok, or will it just cause me headaches and problems and eventually make me wish I'd just waited for a 10/22 (I say this because even if my father-in-law buys it off me, it will be his first gun, no one in their family shoots, its just me, so he's coming to me for all questions/concerns/etc)?

That model 60 is Really nice/appealing looking as well. I may go by Bass Pro and see what all they have there, and steer him towards something like....me preferring wood and all.
