View Full Version : Finding 9mm ammo??

Anybody having any luck finding a source for 9mm ammo? Ever since Obama started his Gun Control attempts Wal Mart ammo case has been empty of 9mm, .45 cal, and some other ammo. Is Wal Mart just selling out this fast or has the source from the manufacturers flat dried up? I was in a pawn shop last week that normally would have probably a 1/2 dozen different brands and bullet weights on the shelf but now it was completely empty. I don't do a lot of shooting but since I started toward the 200-300 round break-in of my new CM9 I'd like to finish with a couple more boxes but no ammo to do it with.

It trickles in, but nowhere has large stocks of it. Even the online dealers are out and when they do get stuff, it goes FAST. You'll pretty much have to get familiar w/ the places local to you and their truck schedules. Walmart is almost every day (truck) and they usually don't know until they unload it what's going to be on it. Other places like Gander, etc. get stuff once a week usually, same day, but where I live there is a line outside before they open that day and you just have to wait and see if the stock lasts until your place in line.

But you are gonna have to be there when they stock the shelves...or there won't be any when you DO get there later.

.22 is the worst to find right now, 9mm is next, then .223/5.56. At least around here.

You may have luck at the online dealers if you hit it at the right time of day, day of week, etc and get your order in while stock is there...

I just happened onto SGAMMO last night and they had CCI Standard Velocity .22, 44 bricks were showing in my phone browser. I knew I couldn't put an order in from my phone quick enough. Ran upstairs (1 floor), laptop was ON already. Hit the site, 4 bricks left, put 2 in my cart, hit 'check out'...out of stock. THAT fast. Gone.

It's borders on comical given that I have a little ammo put back for a rainy day...but I know how folks feel to be 'out' and look forward to stock returning at places someday (soon hopefully, but not likely).

Check bulkammo.com constantly several times a day every single day. They have been getting it in, and as the OP indicated it goes rapidly. Like, as I click refresh, I can watch the number of boxes available decease to zero. Also, they have been increasing their prices I have noticed. I'm gonna guess that if you find it there, it will average you maybe $60/ hundred rounds for FMJ...a far cry from the $22 value pack of WWB at The Walmarts that we are all used to.

I call or stop by my Walmart almost every day. They can tell me what ammo they are getting in overnight. Depending on what caliber and the number of boxes of each, I go down about 6:30 the next morning and buy what they still have.

They seem to get in .45s about 3-4 times a week, 9s about 2-3 times a week, 22s and 223s about once a week. Sometimes only 1-2 boxes, sometimes a couple of cases. The brands vary as well as boxes of 50 and 100 rounds. There are also nights with no delivers of ammo. They limit you to 3 boxes at a time but are fine if my wife tags along and picks up 3 boxes also. We go out to breakfast on the mornings when we go together, sort of a reason to get out of bed early for her.

I've kind of given up looking. The only "deals" online that I saw were for 500 rounds of FMJ at $400+!

At the last gun show, 9mm FMJ was on the tables for $25 a box and UP! That's "cheap" compared to some scalpers out there!

I'm not desperate, though, and hope the situation improves within a few months... not the 18 months some are predicting! I'll be shooting a lot of .22LR!

My LGS has Blazer brass in abundance, but you can only buy two boxes a day.

Well, I just "solved" part of MY ammo problem... I just ordered the TSG-22 Conversion Kit for all Generations Glock 19, 23, 32, or 38 pistols(Threaded barrel version... just in case), 2x 15-round mags, and one more 10-round mag. That plus shipping equalled about what the G22 will cost me after the transaction fee! But, I have a lot of .22LR. I just hope the Federal VP525 stuff will work okay. I think that Wifey will appreciate the benefits of the use of .22LR.

Now I really need to sell more stuff!

you can find it online if your willing to pay $1.25 per round for FMJ 115 gr.. I myself will NOT pay that.

THAT's why I just ordered the .22 conversion kit for Glocks. I wish someone offered that for Kahrs!

If you pay the "going" rates for .22LR online or at gun shows these days, it's about what 9mm FMJ USED to sell for! Nope, I ain't going to participate in that madness, either!

One local indoor range has plenty, as long as you shoot it there. As a member, I get 50 round boxes of 9 or 45 for under $20. I think it's $17 and $19 a box.

The one on Beach Blvd, Gun Gallery, limits you to ONE box per day for the range only. If you rent their pistols for the range, you have to shoot their ammo, too. Their AAA ammo is reasonable, but they can only get half of what they normally get on orders now. I just shot there a few days ago and asked how their supplier was supplying them.

I hope they don't run out of that ammo... they haven't raised the price on it, yet! If it does take a year or so to get back near "normal", I will be shooting a lot more .22LR! It's not as much fun as the real recoil, but .22 pistols still have some, and they go BANG! Well, bang!, anyhow!

That is my experience as well.

Ammo IS coming in - but it evaporates from the shelves just as fast as it comes.

Online sources are difficult because you are competing with lots of people nationally. So checking local stores seems a good strategy.

I stop by my not-so-local farm store at least weekly, and find them stocking new ammo quite often. They said that "a truck comes in every day but we don't know what will be on it," so you just have to keep checking.

On my way home today I picked up a 250 rd box of Magtech (never used this before) .45ACP, but a couple weeks ago they had quite a big pile of Blazer Brass 9mm in 350 rd boxes for $89, so I felt obligated to help them reduce that excessive inventory by taking several boxes of it home.

This weekend I got 3 boxes of WWB .40 and three boxes of WWB .45 at WalMart.
If you look at their web site and check the ammo availability it is sort of a little bit accurate, and it allows you to search nearby WalMarts.

That being said, after Sandy Hook WalMart said they were going to stop selling ammo, supply limited to what was in their warehouses. I don't know if they are sticking with that, but there may never be any more ammo in WalMart.

I had friends in other states, find me 9mm and shipped it to me. 3 boxes from one friend, 2 from another, they did the shopping for me, they knew of stores that had some in stock.

Who told you Walmart was going to stop selling ammo? I've never heard anything like that and I work there as a manager..... maybe it's true though, but just curious as to the authority of your source

Right after Sandy Hook, when the media went wild, and Dicks pulled all the black rifles, there was a report that WalMart was suspending ammo sales and would only be selling what was remaining in their supply system.

The report did make it sound like it was a temporary move pending a permanent decision, and I never heard anything else about it.

Without a doubt Walmart will stop selling ammo in NY once the new law kicks in, they are quite unlikely to do background checks for a box of ammo.

How do you check on ammo availability at WM's web site? I get to their web site just fine and it shows the 9mm Federal FMJ ammo but no quantity at any one time. Thanks

If you choose a store you can look at store inventory and it also will show you what is in other nearby stores. Not totally accurate but it is a starting point.

Call the store and ask to speak to the department manager for sporting goods. Yes you may have to hold for a long time.... but they should be able to tell you what's in, and what might be coming in that night, especially if they look at their pre notification report... then again, sometimes they don't know for sure. It's sad, but right now it's like an inconsistent leaky faucet, not sure when and what will drip in.

There are 3 Walmarts within 5 miles of my house, I stop at 2 which are directly on the way home from work several times every week and since Sandy Hook I have only been lucky enough to buy one box of .40 WWB and one box of .45 WWB the WHOLE time....Only other thing on the shelf was a few .17 WMR or occasionally some 7mm Mag or .270 rifle rounds and some 12 gauge birdshot and very little of that, everything else was empty space!!!!

Pre Obamascare days they were selling .40 for $23.00/50 and .45 for $28.00/50 The last box of .45 WWB/50 I bought was $37.00 so we are now talking right at .75 cents a pop to shoot our .45 pistols which is pretty much the out of range point financially for me to continue to target shoot...

If you put a coin slot at the range and had to drop in 3 quarters in for every trigger pull it starts to bring the price of range shooting home...I live pretty close to Atlanta Arms Co which sells to many shooting ranges across the country and contacted them about buying direct but they can't keep up with sales as is and will not sell to the general public...

I went to a couple LGS in the area and if they did have something they thought a lot of it....One store had a couple of 50 round Remington Golden Saber .45 ACP in very old looking boxes and was asking $54.99 a box (The price stickers were new) I laughed and said sorry, no can do and left...
I hope ammo prices come down but don't see it happening anytime soon when everything for sale is snapped up almost before it hits the shelf...It works the same with gasoline prices, when they go over the moon EVERYTHING goes up but when gas goes down again everything that went up STAYS UP....

I hate it but I'm just a working stiff and while I love to shoot I may now be priced out of the game and will have to fine a cheaper alternative....Darts maybe???....

Getsome, I'm probably getting an air soft bb pistol with blow back to train with.... not sure what else to do these days.

A little tip too, Wal-Mart's trucks deliver in the afternoon, they stock over night, so if you are not there late night or early morning depending on when they put out the ammo, (late night or early am) then forget it. If you could stop there on the way into work or even call them on way in then you'd know to stop before work that would be the ticket!

I paid $20.97 for the .45 WWB

Before the crash, I bought Remington .45 JHP Value Packs for $42.97 per 100. I did sock some of that away. Perfectly good carry ammo.

Not to start the ballistics debate, but a .45 JHP will get the job done. Do not need any fancy "Personal Defense" Ammo for $1.50 a round.

My local Sports Authority had a few boxes of Remington UMC 115gr today. First time I've seen any 9mm in stock there in months. Limit 1 box per customer. Most stores locally still have empty shelves.

I have been fortunate. I live in the boooonies. My local gas station always has plenty of 9mm. They've always been high but their price hasn't changed so $14 doesn't seem bad now.

My range has managed to keep 9mm in stock throughout the panic, but they limit everyone to one box per visit. Last summer I bought a case of PMC 9mm ball ammo and a case of Tula .45 and stuck them in the closet for a rainy day. Well, the rainy day is here, but I find I don't want to shoot it, for fear I won't be able to replace it any time soon. So I'll break it out only in the event of the zombie apocalypse.

I would start reloading again but I hear that components are just as hard to get as ammo.
I have not saved brass in years, the last three range trips I picked up the brass and took it home with me just in case.

chrish
04-05-2013, 03:20 PM
Yep, I considered reloading too. But, as much brass as I've saved from the range over the years...you can't get power, primers, or bullets right now. So what's the point in investing in the press and stuff. Maybe someday, when I have time. But I barely have time to hunt for ammo...definitely not enough time in the day to hunt for components and then turn around and spend the time learning and actually doing the reloading.

If you were already into it, and can find the components, yea...but not a good time to try it now, it'd just get me MORE hot under the collar.

Even .22LR is 20¢ a round and UP! That's the latest .bot search for .22LR!

D!cks opened a new store on the Northside here and I actually got up in time... actually stayed up since before Wifey got up at 5AM to get ready to go to work() to drive 18 miles up there, check at the Super Walmart... nada... and stand in front in light drizzle for about 10 minutes before the store opened. Everyone was civil and I found out that the store had passed out slips of paper with 1 to 100 on them for ammo alone. That stopped any "press" at the door. I took my time because I didn't figure there would be any ammo left by the time the first 100 customers had their limit... the manager announced as much.

I wandered around, went to the rest room, and then went back to the ammo/gun counter. I got to talk with a lot of guys and even a 3-4 year-old little blonde who kind of shared my umbrella while we were out front. She was with her mom and about 3 other kids.

I think they ran out of .22LR pretty quickly. I didn't really hear and understand the ammo limit... 3 boxes... something 200 rounds... something 300 rounds, but I don't think that you get more than one box over 200 rounds. I did see some guys walking away with those UMC 250-round MegaPacks... .223, that I noticed. I finally go up there and could have bought my limit of something, but I didn't really NEED it and wasn't crazy about the prices, so I didn't buy any... not that there was much choice or ammo left at that point.

I did help a guy that had just moved here from out of state that knew nothing about guns. He was asking about a Remington 870 and asked me if I knew anything about them. I had 4 or more of them at one time and explained some things to him... I also told him after the clerk turned away, to go check at Walmart... better prices. D!cks wanted $350 for a wood-stocked 870. He was profusely grateful. He would have had to wait 5 days or whatever, anyhow, so the clerk said.

I wound up buying a box each of the "cheaper" .177 and .22 pellets and a 25-pack of C02 cartridges to use my $10 off $25 or more coupon. Of, course the coupon wasn't good for anything like ammo or guns! There was a discussion about that before one guy concluded that you could buy pellet guns and use the coupon, so it was good for pellets. I guess that I saved a few bucks over getting that stuff at Walmart... not enough to cover the cost of my gas up there and back, but it was an outing... in the rain and early morning rush-to-work() crowd.:D

They did have some shotgun ammo... several kinds of 12-ga 00 buckshot, including some Olin(Winchester) military 5-packs, but they were $5.99 a 5-pack and I passed on that, too.

My .22LR conversion for my G19 or G23 comes in Monday. I want to try that out if it comes in early enough. I bought a cheap($20) nested tripod/rest thingy for pistol and rifle so that I can really test fire groups to adjust my sights on the 10/22 and my pistols. Dime-sized ragged holes are a bit easier without so much offhand "wobble". :D

All right I am going to give up my source just got my last 1000 rounds today.

Yes they are reloads but they go BANG just like the new stuff & just as good to shoot at the range. They ship same day as you order & takes a week from Idaho to FL.

Watch for them on:

They have been selling 500 round lots.

I hate the way the prices have gone. My wife bought me 115 FMJ 50 round boxes for Christmas for $11.99 a box. Today the same LGS has them for $29.99 a box.
