<Rant on>

If you think that the link is worthy of posting, then give your opinion with the link or at least some explanation. :31:

<Rant off>

If jocko can do it, so can you!

It's kinda like Obamacare. You have to click on it to find out what's in it. In business it's called a tease. What are you afraid of?

virus. been there, done that ... and it wasn't cheap.

I followed a blind link posted by a "respected member" on another forum 2-3 years ago to a "news site". It just happened that news site wasn't one of the best protected on the net, and it was passing a Trojan down the line. It wasn't so much having to spend a few hundred bucks getting my laptop back up and running, but the matter of getting all my licensed s/w reloaded, configured, retrieving files from the toasted hard drive, etc.

I don't follow links to sites that I have no clue who, where, or what they are.

There are no respected members on other forums. They are all here.

Even Jocko isn't respected on other forums, actually he's not much respected on this forum but more than those others.

Infections really suck... the bad ones, especially! I run Norton 360 on my main machine and give it fits with some of my wanderings. Last year I thought I had an infection, but it was a hard drive going bad. That still sucked. I finally parted with XP Media Edition... like XP Professional, but I was only running the 32-bit version. I decided to upgrade to Win 7 Pro and lost the use of a few programs, but at least my quad-cpu can run faster now.

I have McAffee on my Lenovo cheapie laptop I got so my wife would have something for any job-related stuff and I haven't been "off the beaten path" with it... wow! That had another meaning, too!:D

I've only had one really bad infection and that was from one of those Rooski AntiVirus rogueware/extortionware things. I had removed them or got past those several times, but I finally got a version that took over and would only constantly reboot and I couldn't get around it, so I had to reformat and start over with that... upgraded the system, too, I think.

Wifey thinks I'm an expert and should be getting paid for this, but I struggle sometimes to keep my own stuff running, though I do like to tinker and build/install my own stuff. She thinks I'm a "speed typist", too, but I'm only a little better than Jocko, but I try to spell everything correctly and correct my typos constantly... bad timing with fingers. Evidently, she's more of the hunt and peck, two-fingered "typer"!:rolleyes: She has to do a lot of typing on computers... reports and stuff!

I feel like I'm dyslexic when typing sometimes. I can hardly ever make a capital "I"! And I double the wrong letter in words a lot... timing!

Most everyone that works for a large organization professionally on a computer
is aware of security updates and patches that the IT department pushes to all the corporate machines on the network with regularity.

You too can have the latest security patches installed, on a ongoing basis, on your personal computer, for free.
http://secunia.com/products/consumer/psi/sys_req/

Having your application software on the latest security patch level.
Using quality antivirus/firewall software.
And not installing anything without knowing what is is and verifying the source.
Is your best defense against the wild world of the internet.

I use Secunia PSI in concert with Webroot and have never had a virus or issue of any kind.

I've even clicked on some of Jocko's links!
So my system is clearly bulletproof.

I've been using Secunia PSI for about 3 years now and I really like it.

You're far more likely to get a virus from a hacked e-mail from a friend that from a link to youtube video. If you have good virus protection it shouldn't be a problem.

Let me jump in and encourage everyone to practice safe surfing and not click on suspicious links, but...

You can also improve your security posture if you can get rid of Windows, completely.

If you don't need any Windows-only software (no, Office doesn't count), then you can switch to using linux. My linux of choice is Ubuntu. It's incredibly easy to use and even comes with LibreOffice, which is fully compatible with other productivity software. Best of all -- it's FREE.

Get it at www.ubuntu.com/download.

Concerning my personal experience on the thread subject, I've come to the conclusion that it would make no difference to our local techno experts:

1. what anti-virus s/w I was using, because brand "lmno" is much better for you than brand "efgh", as everyone knows.

2. what type of link I followed, because there's no way a virus could embed itself in a link like that without any av s/w stopping it.

3. .....

4. ......

2nd the linux option. I've been using it for almost 15 years and posting with it now (aptosid). No, I'm not a dweeb. Just don't like paying the Microsoft or Apple software tax plus paying for application software. And no anti-virus software needed.
