View Full Version : Dumped the Sig P250 for a CZ P-01, now experiencing handgun nirvana

So,
I finally did it. I loved my Sig P250 but had a itch that had to be scratched. I had been shopping across the board (other SIGs, Beretta, CZ, etc). Wanted something all metal. Wanted something not MUCH heavier than the P250 in it's compact format (~25oz give or take). Wanted something that had a good track record, tune-able, etc. I came down to the P-01 and the PCR, both CZs. Probably would have taken either, but as it was going to be replacing my HD gun, I preferred the P-01 for the rail. My father called me one morning and said, guess what Gander has in the case? P-01. I'm not typically a Gander shopper. Purchased my Sig there, but otherwise, just don't go in there that much for gun stuff. But getting either of these CZs seems to be pretty difficult as they are more rare to run across than other stuff. GunBroker prices were off the chart high right now. Long story short, sold the P250 and all the spare stuff I had for it (mags, slide, etc) and picked up the P-01 last week. Probably could have done better at one of the LGSs, but none of them had a line on one and I'm not fond of waiting to scratch once I start itching.
First trip to the range was downright impressive. Have NEVER been this accurate with a handgun. The grip is spectacular. Sights so-so (they'll be replaced). Accuracy was unbelievable compared to how I shoot in general. Part of that is the single action, the rest I can only attribute to the gun itself. I was even better w/ it's double action pull that I am w/ my Kahr or w/ my Sig. Given the stock CZ trigger, go figure. No idea what's up w/ that.
So, next, probably going to send it to one of the custom places and have the trigger/hammer job done. Reviews seem to be generally outstanding on that upgrade.
Will have to post some picts when I get time.
Now...how to figure a way to procure a CZ SP-01 w/o getting myself in trouble at home...buwahahahahahaha.

I kind of want a new gun.
But am in a quandary about what to get.
Seems like I have a nice collection without any obvious holes.
Every time I think of something I might want?
Seems like it's just another flavor of something I've already got.
That full size HK45 I rented for reactive target practice last week really surprised me.
I really don't favor the Batman rips on my P30 during live fire.
They torque in my hand.
But the slightly larger HK45 was a pure pleasure to shoot.
HK does have the new HK45T tacticals coming out now.
Mmmmmmm

I keep saying that I want to break from my 9mm binge, but like you said, I keep finding flavors of things in 9mm (Kahr, now CZ, also carbines) that I want to get or at least try and then unload if I'm not enamored w/ it at the range.
Problem now is that even with a small stock of ammo, I'm going broke buying what I find when the price is good. I have to slow down at some point, but so far I'm not. By spending on ammo, I've really slowed down on the gun buying right now and have dumped the stuff I felt I really didn't need (P250 due to the CZ purchase for example).
If I go .45, it's going to be a Kahr initially, then something higher capacity. The HK is on the list b/c of a couple of you guys here that have them and swear by them. But I think when I do start adding .45 to the collection, it'll just be a couple and I'll stop (yea, right!). Trying to really centralized onto one primary handgun caliber and one primary rifle caliber, plus a .22lr...and then I have to stop...I just have to. I'm not a collector and I'm not in love w/ guns for the sake of what the gun is. Shooting is my hobby, not the gun in particular, and I look for things that shoot well. Kinda like cars. I like to drive, and want a car that drives well. Not particularly fond of the car brand/make in general, just 'the car'. I know folks that collect both historical guns as well as just collect to have mass quantity of arms because they enjoy variety, but I don't see myself doing either of those until I retire maybe.
Going this route, selling and trading up/down has so far worked well for me to avoid sinking a fortune into this hobby but still weeding my way down to those things that I truly love to go shoot with. Never lost my shirt on anything yet, well maybe 1 gun that I can think of, but that's a pretty good batting average.

I'll have to go with Barth on the HK's. I have three of them, two 45's and a FS 40, and they have replaced SIG's as my favorites. However that said, I will not give up my P220 or 1911 C3. For a carry gun, it's hard to beat the PM45 [or CM45] and the CW45.

And yes, I'm not giving up my Sig P220 45 or P239 357 either...

I have a CZ sp o1 tactical and I LOVE it!! Very accurate and very reliable. I plan on having the trigger tuned when I'm in AZ in about six months. I was told that "Angus Hobdell" is the man to see.
Good luck

Yep, the SP-01 tactical would be the one I'd want.
I'm still undecided on the trigger/hammer job as far as where I'm going to send it. It's either gonna be CZCustom (Angus and crew) or Cajun Gun Works in Louisiana. From my searching, they seem to be of equal quality and I've yet to run across anyone that has a complaint w/ either. They seem to do pretty much the same thing. Smooth out the supposedly 12-14lb DA trigger (I say supposedly b/c it doesn't feel that heavy to me, just a bit rough/gritty) to a 7-8lb DA trigger. And turn the single action from 5-6lb to 3-4lb. I honestly am fine w/ the SA trigger as it is, but definitely would like the DA trigger smoothed out and lightened. The hammer replacement is supposedly the key to it all, but they replace a whole pile of parts and polish/smooth all the internals.
I'd be interested in comparing notes once you have it done if we both go w/ different sources. I'm hoping to send my soon, but it may be a month or two before I can swing it.

I got a CZ 75B SS from the CZ Custom shop last December and their service is A+. I didn't have a trigger job done, but I may send it in one of these days...not that it needs it. The SA pull is great. DA is ok, but I don't do too much DA shooting with it anyway. Plus the more I shoot it the better it gets. Highly accurate, zero recoil. I love CZ's, they feel so good in your hands. Dare I say 1911 good. You made a great choice. My 75 is easily the sweetest shooter I have ever wrapped my hands around, and that includes 1911's. My next CZ will be a 75 Shadow (they are like potato chips, ya know?). I think any of the 75 variants are great guns, so congrats on the P-01.

I still haven't figured out the picture thing. Sorry, I'm technically challenged!!!!
On 9 Feb 2013 the Selfridge Air National Guard gun store finally opened. It was suppose to open in Sep. but kept getting delayed. Which means they had great inventory that was pre gun/ammo buying panic!!
Well.... I went nuts!! The prices were very good, plus I did not having to pay sales tax, and by opening a new base credit card I saved an additional 10%.
Here's what I bought (gun wise) that day;
CZ SP 01 Tatical
XDMs
and FH five seven (which I can't get ammo for)

So,
I finally did it. .
Your in trouble now. You went from wanting to scratch an itch to a full blown addiction. I started out wanting a 75b which I bought, that went to a CZ82 then onto a PO-1. So now I have three.
Never even knew I wanted a pistol that shoots the 9x18 makarov round till I handled a CZ 82.
Your right that PO-1 is a very nice pistol. I also shoot it better then any pistol I own, and that includes my 1911 which I also shoot very well.
Congrats on your new CZ. As you stated it will not be your last. Not by a long shot. (pun intended)

That's interesting and a little unsettling since you had that occur w/ more than one model. Never heard anything about that before. I'll have to watch that and see what happens over time. I put 4 full 14rd mags thru my P-01 last weekend. All the time I had. Next nice day, will be putting some serious rounds downrange and I'll know more. I picked up 2 mecgar 16rd mags last week, so I'll have 4 mags to test with.
One other interesting thing about my P-01. I don't have a NATO number on the right side of the slide. I've never seen a picture of one like that. Couple of people here and there have mentioned there are some out there like that, but mine doesn't have it. Kinda disappointed about that, but no big deal I suppose.

I fear that could very well be the case after my single trip to the range w/ it. It was really busy that day, so I couldn't do any move and shoot drills. I only do that on days when I'm the only person there (try to go when it's rainy). No question it's a keeper. Can't wait to see what I can do w/ it double action after the trigger job.
I'm hoping that an SP-01 would be enough to slow me down. But you never know. There is the PCR that's still light weight, but its so close to the P-01 I doubt I'll get one (famous last words). I don't usually like really heavy guns. 30oz is about my limit and the SP-01 is well over that, but I may still have to have one. What would be NICE is if CZ announces an aluminum framed SP-01 to match the P-01. That would probably be a ~30-32oz compared to over 38oz.
But I can't imagine how nice that 38oz is to shoot. The P-01 was easy easy and it's 10-11oz lighter.
Looking forward to my CZ relationship as much as my Kahr relationship.

My SP-01 Phantom is the most accurate semi-auto centerfire pistol that I own.
You'll really like the SP-01 :)

I had an itch for a CZ and ended up with two of them so far. I was looking for an SP 01 and saw a nice 75BD. I bought it because it was cool and I like a pistol with a decocker and figured it would make a nice backup nightstand gun. Loved it and also picked up a regular SP 01.
I'm thinking an SP 01 Shadow would be better, and it costs about the same as doing the work later on an SP 01. Although I like both of the current CZs so well, I so far am not motivated on another. The P09 might be worth a look though too!
But, probably a Kadet adaptor first.

The CZ PO-1 and the PCR are the same pistol except the PCR has no light rail. Which does make it a bout a 1/2 oz. lighter. I got pretty lucky when I got my PO-1. It was sitting in a used gun cabinet at the LGS and only paid $400 for it. It appeared like it might have had 50/100 rounds through it at the time, and was made in 2011 and was in great shape. I about passed out when I saw it because I've never even seen a PO-1 before much less a good deal on a used one.
Found my CZ82 in the same used gun cabinet a couple months before.
After you shoot them a while the trigger seems to get a little better in the DA mode. I do not know what Frank's problem is with the mags, but I've never had a problem shooting fully loaded mags out of any of my CZ's.

I never heard of that before unless it's something new. Mine has the NSN # on it. Do you know what year your pistol was made? There should be a two digit number just forward of the ejection port on the right side. More than likely it's a 12 or 13.

Yep, it's a 2012. I had run across that number on the slide when looking at it at the shop and checked on one of the CZ forums to confirm that was the year manufactured. The only info I have on it regarding not having the NSN is that some folks on the CZ forums said that sometimes different regions or channels would request them that way or sometimes CZ just put some out that way. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. In looking at pictures of internals and externals on the net, doesn't seem to be any difference whatsoever. Definitely aluminum, definitely shoots nice...have to assume its the exact same gun as an NSN gun. Just thought it ODD.
EDIT: Ah, it's just a change to the process. Not sure why changing a spring would result in a different manufacturing process on the slide or stamping the slide...but, right there on the CZ website for the P-01
For many years, the P-01 carried an NSN engraved on its frame, making it the first NATO-spec pistol ever available to the public. Recently, the factory decided to upgrade the slide stop spring which in turn means the current models may not carry the NSN.

I'm sure that NSN # doesn't make it a better or worse pistol than any other CZ on the market. I know the other CZ's I own have been every bit as reliable as the PO-1. I will admit though that even though the 75B has a longer barrel I shoot the PO-1 better. Go figure?

I have often thought about grabbing a P-01. I have long been a fan of CZ pattern guns, and it seems like an ideal carry size/weight. Then there is the Duty. One of these days I will drop the hammer on one.
Not to sidetrack, but I have also been playing with the Canik CZ clones lately. Nice pistols if you are on a budget.

I've also read the tanfoglio's are nice, evidently another CZ copy. But many of them seem to run just about as much as the equivalent CZ. But don't know much about them, just have run across them in reading about the CZ stuff in general.
I honestly didn't know JACK about anything CZ until this recent shopping/research effort to find a relatively lightweight replacement for my P250. I was pretty much ready to drop a mint on a P229 and probably would not have been disappointed w/ it. But after reading about the P-01 and PCR, I put the P229 purchase on a back burner until I could lay hands on a CZ. Once I picked this one up at Gander, it was a no brainer. P229 still an excellent gun and I'd like to have one. But glad I opted to go the CZ route instead (for now).
Off to the range here shortly for the 'official' break-in and evaluation. I only had time to put a few rounds thru it last week.
