Expensive 9mm ammo??

I was just in one of our local pawn shops today and they had over a dozen boxes each of 9mm American Eagle and PMC ammo. They were priced at $35 per box. I've never used any of either of these brands but does that sound like a little steep, or is it just because I'm used to buying Federal and Winchester at Wal Mart for around $15 a box, which has not been available there for several weeks now though?
Are these two brands exceptional quality compared to Wal Mart's, kind of like comparing a Kahr or Glock with a Kel-Tec?

According to the free market system, a fair price is what a willing buyer and a willing seller are able to agree upon for a given commodity. It may be steep to you, but someone else will come on and tell you that they've paid that and even more. In the end, only you can decide for yourself what you're willing to pay for ammunition.

If you do a lot of shooting, then you will probably pay a lot more to keep your supply replenished.

I think that $15 a box for range ammo is outrageous, but then I have ammo. I didn't wait until it was non-existent or outrageously priced to buy a supply of ammo. I'm not a prepper, per se, but I like to be prepared. I kind of feel like the busy ants preparing for Winter while the grasshoppers played their fiddles and faced starvation in the cold Winter because they didn't prepare.

I've been looking online for a while and haven't seen any "good" deals... when I did find anyone with actual stocks of ammo. I even went to a Grand Opening for a new D!cks Sporting Goods store on our Northside and waited while they went through the 100 numbers they gave out for ammo sales. I actually could have bought ammo. but I didn't need any and there were those that might. I could have bought several boxes, but their meager supply and the higher prices allowed me to pass and leave what was left for those who really needed ammo. I bought some pellets and CO2 cartridges to use my $10 coupon... which wasn't good for firearms ammo, anyhow.

If you don't have ammo... and you want or NEED ammo, whatever price you need to pay will be up to you. For self defense and life or death type decisions, you'll be the judge! Whatever you decide, you need to at least test whatever you choose for defense ammo... BEFORE you bet your life on it working with your pistol!

In a lgs today, and they had 9mm, ,40, .38 all at their usual precrazy prices with no limits. They have always been a few dollars more than Walmart, but I bought a dozen boxes to top back up my inventory. It looks like supply is improving.

They didn't have any .22lr in bricks nor did they have any match .308. But, they did have ammo for ARs and AKs as well.

Hang tight, I saw 9mm Hornady SD ammo on the web yesterday for pre-panic prices. I think supply may catch up (ever so slightly.) Haven't seen any FMJ 9mm anywhere.

I can still find .45 ammo locally for $22-$23 a box if I keep an eye out. $20 at Walmart when they have it.

we need to stop buying ammo at those prices.. Its outrageous. And the more that is sold at that price they higher it will go.. I will NOT pay that for 9mm.. no way, no how. its not like the world is going to end this week in which you need it (at least i don't think it will).

There is a particular online vendor selling 50 rounds of FMJ for $69 a box.. I will NEVER buy anything from them. There are way too many sellers taking advantage of a bad situation. We need to remember who they are.

I saw 1 place USAAMMO that was trying to get $100 a box for 50 rounds of FMJ.

I hope that was a typo on their web site. FYI, I bought from them once at a good price and I recommend that NO ONE SHOULD EVER BUY FROM THEM. it took one month to get my order and there wasn't even a shortage back then.

Neither of these brands are what I would call exceptional quality. They are good for range ammo but...................the price is high for what it is.

I went by Academy near where I live in Houston last Thursday at 1200 (that's noon to you non-24 hr folks) and they had a bunch of Monarch 9 mm, for the same price they have always been at $12.99 per box. Limit was three boxes. Almost bought some but since I reload, left it for the other folks. Also had 40 and 45 ACP available. No 22 lr though. :mad:

There is a place in San Antonio gouging like that. They're selling WWB 100 round value packs for $129.00. They will never get my business even if this all gets back to reasonable levels.

At our local gun show Sunday one big ammo vendor had 9mm ammo for 1000$ per case. I laughed then and I still laugh when I think about it.

They have moved a ton of ammo though, they had probably 10 empty skids stacked in a corner so they moved a bunch.

The first show after the panic they nearly sold out and this vendor probably has a space 30ft long and 15ft deep or larger with skids of ammo all the way around nearly chest high. They don't need tables, they just work off the top of the stacks.
They were surrounded by nearly empty skids by Sunday morning.

Things have to improve, can't get much worse but I believe they will get better.

Just got back from my bi-weekly tour of the local reloading shop. Looked even worse than it did on Monday. :(

It's definitely worse again. No question.

It got better for a bit in early March, but it didn't hold. 223/556 is better now as are the AR prices (still not great, but better). But in addition to mag prices still being stupid, on the ammo side, 9mm and 22lr have both gotten worse. Local places that were running out in minutes or hours in March are now not even getting those 2 calibers in on a weekly basis anymore. I've been in a couple lately and they said there was no ammo on the truck, none. Granted, could have been a piddly amount and they kept it for themselves, but either way, it's dried up again for the time being.

Went to the range w/ my new CZ last Friday and then again w/ the CZ and my MR .22 rifle on Tuesday afternoon. I think that's gonna be it for me for awhile. I'm going to sit on the stash I have until I see some daylight at the end of the tunnel. Right now, not seeing it.

If I can't make a bulk order, then I can't bulk shoot. Period.

It's not a typo. I got an E-Mail from them with the same price. Last year I bought 500 rounds of the same ammo for under $20 a box. I found that the 45 ACP was underpowered and would not work well in my Detonics 1911 which likes hot ammo. It worked in my carbine and CW45, but I had made a note to buy no more of their reloads.

That's what I was seeing here in NE Ohio. So I quit shooting 9mm altogether. Gave me a great reason to buy a K40 since 40sw is available at reasonable prices. Guess I'm not complaining.

A lgs was quoting $85 a box for the little range 9mm he had left. I figure he was just making enemies. I won't go back there even after the prices settle. For anything.

In contrast, another lgs was selling 9mm under $20 a box as long as he could get it. Maybe he didn't profit much on the ammo but he made a customer for life.

Searching the local gun trader web site the past few months has given me the opportunity several times to pick up some 9MM range ammo pretty reasonably considering the times. This morning I picked up six 100 round boxes of WWB for $40 per box.

Our local wal mart last week had 1 boxes of 100 wwb for $23.85.limit 3. I know some people like to hammer wal mart but they have not fokked the gun owner with such out rageous prices that the lgs are doing. Gander MT IMO is the worst.

I hope that when this sh!t all comes fullcircle that we gun owner and ammo buyers will remember those online dealers who stuck it to us or tried to. I just willnot pay those prices. I will shoot far less if need be and when wal mart has a good supply, I will be there with cash i hand and fokk those bad dealers.. We have a little poo-dunk dealer right across the street from wal mart in my home town and every day at 7 a.m.he and his wife or son is at wal mart and they buy 3 of any ammo they can buy and walk back across the street and put it on the shelf at double the price. They thik they are really cool to. rocksuckers is what they are..

I'll just be patient and only buy when I find a good deal. I have enough in reserve to hold me over for quite awhile. My practice sessions have suffered because of this too.
