I just had a great time with a little job. Those are usually the best, easy jobs that can be done quickly and I can see that it is good and be impressed with my skills, such as they are.

I have an old Winchester 1300 Defender. It came with a bead/fiber optic site on it. It would be super, except that it has an 18.5" barrel and would most likely be used in low light if used for anything other than playing around. And it is fun for playing around, feeds anything and pretty quickly for a pump.

I have other shotguns, one semi with a tritium site on it that I always thought of as the go to gun for defense if needed.

But, since I always liked the action on the 1300 (second to my old Ithaca), I spent the $35 on a tritium sight for it. A little bit of fitting to get the threads to stay out of the bore, and that old 1300 is ready for most anything.

A nice, easy, and rewarding little project.

I was brought up on 870 myself but have heard good things about the Winchester pump action being quicker and more smooth. I was recently on their site and read about an inertia driven action assist. Not sure if its new or not but I'm interested in checking one out. My 870 is a wingmaster with a 28in barrel. It'll do the job in a Home SD scenario but I've been wanting a short barrel pistol grip model. Easier to maneuver around corners and quicker to acquire target. Winchester is doing good things with their MOA system on rifles too. So, needless to say, I have a Model 70 on my list as well. Those triggers are perfection.

The 1300s had the rotary bolt/inertia system. I am not familiar with what they are selling these days. You can still pick up 1300s used pretty cheap, but there is not all the aftermarket stuff for them. Frankly, all the major brands are pretty good these days. A friend brought by a Mossberg and that shot just fine as well.

My favorite pump is still the Ithaca, but new they are expensive. My old Ithaca is a very long barrel with a fixed, full choke. So, its not really a defense gun. I have a Mossberg 930 as well, but I expect my wife would grab that one if things got busy.

I think at least half the guns I own are out of production. Parts availability varies on them. So, when I can do an under $40 upgrade to something that increases its utility, it works for me.
