View Full Version : Coonan 1911 in .357 Magnum (not 357 Sig)

I thought this was a cool 1911, chambered in .357 Magnum, not .357 Sig.
I guess it comes with a lighter spring for shooting 38 Super. I would think the grip would be a bit wide, but the reviewer says it was comfortable in his "average" size hands. The magazine holds 7 rounds. Here is a review: https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/reviews/coonan-357-magnum/?utm_source=SilverpopMailing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=CCR%2005-17-2013%20Pros%20(5)&utm_content=

Jocko can't complain about the bullets moving too slow out of this beast. LOL

You could chop both his legs off at the hip and he'd still kick!

Long time object of my desires. On my "will own" list for sure.

if you shoot .38's, do you use a different magazine or one with a mag spacer for the shorter oal?

I seem to remember the .357 mag version being offered several years ago, but ain't no way my longitudinally challenged paws could grip that thing.

I don't know, all they said was a different recoil spring was included for .38 Super.

The Coonan magazine will handle 38 special and 357 magnum rounds equally well. A lighter recoil spring allows proper function with the lighter shooting 38sp.
To me, anyone who can shoot a ParaOrd double stack P14 has "enough hand" to shoot the Coonan. The Para is wider at the grip and the Coonan longer but they have about the same amount of steel in either grip.

It looks nice.

Wish list. I have fired one and the grip while big is not a big issue. It sure makes a lound BWANG when it lights off.

Looks cool.
I've read good reviews on them.
Much like the ATM III 30 cal 1911, they are rare guns I believe.

My thirst for a semi auto hand cannon
has been satisfied by my 10.5" barrel SLR-106U Suchka chambered in 5.56 NATO.

Technically it's a pistol, right? LOL!

The ATM's yes, The Coonans are currently back in production. A might bit costly tho.

Yep... Pricy. I plan to have mine built with adjustable night sights (No I don't know why, as busting off that first 158grain hotshot would leave both myself and the now wounded BG, deaf and flash blind). Next comes a custom SN#, add two extra mags (4 total as they can get hard to find), plus shipping and FFL fees and I expect about $2200 bucks and a six to eight month wait.

Only question is, does Bawanna make grips for them?? :D

Well not yet but there's a first time for everything. Wife isn't gonna be happy when I tell her I have to have one of these to make a set of grips on.

I think that's actually Dad with his three daughters.
Don't understand the lack of eye protection for two of them.
Although the pretty one up front doesn't appear to have the SA gun cocked.
So actually firing the weapon might be an issue anyway.

I'm thinking all the guns are unloaded and the pic is staged.

I have met Dan Coonan a time or two and is a very creative guy. The gun shoots great but if you save your brass you need a big tarp. My preference is a seven shot revolver.

^^^ call me silly but I prefer revolver cartridges in revolvers and auto cartridges in semi-autos.

Still I get the whole non-45acp thing. My next 1911 might just be 10mm or 38super...just because.

I agree on the brass thing, as I reload the caliber. Have 3 wheel guns in .357, may just save for an Anaconda to compliment the King Cobra. Reload 44 mag as well.

Years ago, mid 90s, one of the lady shooters at the range where I did most everything, had a Coonan .357, and let us shoot it whenever she dropped by.

I seem to recall 38 specials not working so well, being really finicky for feeding. Not for recoil, but for length and the way the fit in, and stripped from, the magazine.

The mag well is longer forward to back than the 45, and the whole grip area has an "added length" feel to it... well heck, its longer so it oughta.

Accuracy, ah... ok... I didn't shoot it for accuracy, just for fun, so who knows.

Range reloads were dirty as hell, and would require a CLP treatment every box or so. Factory ran fine and clean.

I seem to recall the slide and frame were castings, better than... say... AMT (which sucked), but not as nice a some of today's really fine cast items, like Caspian. I suppose they could have improved the process, as things have changed considerably in manufacturing since that time.

Enjoy it.

Curiosity got the better of me, I went and read up on the modern Coonan... seems they have the 38/357 thing perfected these days. So there ya go... whats not to like, except the price!

Saw a guy shooting a AMT Automag III .30 Carbine Semi Auto at the range one day.
It was super cool!:cool:Always like the looks of the Coonan 357.
Sort of decided to go the cheap conventional route.

Fired one many times. Recoil with 357's is pretty stout. Other than they are too proud (pricey) of the gun it is a fun gun to shoot.
