This is the actual recording from the bridge of the US destroyer PORTER DDG78 colliding with a merchant supertanker. The PORTER's CO really stepped on his talliwacker...big time.

And that is why he was relieved of his command....

Makes me wonder what he had been smoking. Some good questions have been asked like what in the hell was he doing at 20kts in that spot? And where they asleep in the CIC who should have known about the hidden tanker from radar and they were silent when should have been advising the bridge.

It appears to me (and what do I know) that the Captain was pissed at the OOD giving countermanding advice and put that ahead of the ship (and his career).

Cmdr. Arriola should take a page of explanations from his boss and excuse himself.

* It was Bush's fault.
* I heard about it when you did.
* I'm outraged! I'll get to the bottom of this.
* What, this... that's old news.
* A nasty video caused these ships to collide...

I don't think that the conversation on the bridge was any more intense than when my ship ran aground in Cuba. Just sayin'.

Evidently leadership drains from the top in this administration.

As a seven year veteran and plankowner of DDG61, I'm disgusted at the lack of situational awareness on the bridge and the lack of communication with Combat Information Center. Every visual contact -- ESPECIALLY at night -- must be correlated to a radar contact.

Good grief. I'm glad someone on that bridge thought to activate a voice recorder.
