I carry Winchester 180gr JHP in my K40. Mainly because 1. it was available at wally world last year 2. I wanted JHP as opposed to FMJ (I know some people who carry FMJ as opposed to JHP because of reliability issues etc.) and 3. Winchester has always been reliable ammo. Was wondering what kind of ammo people out there in Kahr land load in their primary/everyday carry and why.

In my PM9: Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP. My reasoning: Because it it's good enough for the vast majority of PD's that use 9mm then it's good enough for me.

P9's get Winchester Ranger-T 124 grain +P+.
It's like having a small .40 without the same snap.
.45's get Hornady 200 grain +P.

Federal Premium HST 124 gr. 9mm, Winchester PDX1 Bonded (legal talons) 230 gr .45
Ballistics gel sim tests sold me on both rounds. Reliable feeding with minimal setback from chambering and unloading, But the HST's are a bit flimsy around the outermost edges and the feed ramp on my cw9 is deforming the top round quite a bit.

Wow, looks like there's a whole slew of differen't brands everybody is using with no big consensus. Not a lot of responses on WHY ya'll chose that paticular ammo. I was curious about that too.

Speer GD SB 230gr in my .45 as it's far shorter than a 5 inch barrel.
Appears to both make the best that can be had velocity out of a short barrel and the bullet is designed to expand at that velocity. With adequate penetration.
Still contemplating choices for 9mm... but I have 18+1 available on that one.

I choose based on ballistic tests. Why?
Any handgun rounds is gonna punch thru walls (interior or exterior) like hot butter. So barring choosing another weapon (shotgun, rifle), if my round is going thru anyway, I want it to fly straight when it does. I do not want it getting deflecting and hitting something unintended in some other direction. I understand that I have to also do my part and consider what's behind my target. Secondly, tests on these rounds indicate they will expand and penetrate gelatin to an appropriate level and not get 'plugged' and pass thru. Thirdly, on the off chance that I have to shoot THRU something, I want a round that will do it and be effective on the other side.
So...from that, my choice has always been to look for the rounds that have weight and/or tests that indicate that the round I'm considering can do that. In the case of a PDX1 or the newer Critical Duty, those requirements are met. Not that there aren't others, just my two choices currently.

9mm's have 124gr Hydra Shoks.
.40 has 155gr Winchester Rangers.
.45 has 230gr Hydra Shoks in one, and 230gr WWB HP in the other (they feed better)
.357 has 125gr green box Remington HP.

Right now in my Kahr CM40 I have some Triton 135gr JHP. These average 1260 fps from the CM40 over my Chronograph and the expansion is pretty good with minimal fragmenting, but there is still some. 475 ft-lbs from a 3" bbl isn't too shabby. The 135gr isn't really my favorite, but for now, I'm giving it a try.
The same day I chrongraphed the 135gr Tritons I also ran some factory Speer 180gr Gold Dots. They average 990 fps from the CM40. What's interesting is, well to me at least, is that previously I had shot the same Gold Dots through my G27 and it averaged around 945-950 fps. So when the Kahr posted up 990, I grabbed my G27 and put a few more through it and sure enough, even though the G27 has about .5" longer barrel, it consistently averages about 50 fps slower than the shorter barreled Kahr. Oh well!

Barrels can have tighter or less tight chambers.
Where a 4" barrel can sometimes produce velocities greater than a 5".
IMHO - only a chronograph with a specific gun and load can tell the real story.
Speer's hot 155 gr bonded GDHP has been chronographed from a MK40 at 1,150 fps @ 450 E.
But they kick hard and follow up shots aren't quick for me.
My MK40 loves 180s. Soft shooting, fast back on target and groups really well.
I've since switched to Speer GDHP Short Barrel 180s in my MK40.
But my favored round in 40 S&W from a service sized 4" barrel pistol (HK P30)?
165 gr - Winchester Ranger T-Series or Federal HST (~1,130/40 fps @ ~468/478 E)

I don't carry them either, but a Hornady Critical Defense will pass right thru your entire house most likely, as will most any handgun round...dunno that I'd volunteer to be the human ballistics gel on the other side of a wall.
Critical Duty is the new and improved round from Hornady. Only round to pass the various FBI barrier tests. Most of the tests on the 'tube' are pretty impressive. I've moved to it as my carry round along w/ the Winchester PDX1.

I've been using a local companies ammo Precision Cartridge Company 230gr JHP 45acp. The owner is actually a fellow member on an Indiana based firearm forum that I belong to. He's always at the local gun shows around my area. Good guy, good company, great ammo.

In my CM9, Speer GD 124gr+P, and in my Ruger KLCR .357mag, either Winchester PDX1 .38spl 130gr+P or CorBon DPX .357mag 110gr.- whichever is available when need to purchase. All three are reliable and accurate in my handguns.

This guy just finish an extensive 380 short barrel test and move to 9mm SB. CD 135 was his first candidate.

K40 Covert. Speer GDHP 165 gr. Why? It functions well and is accurate enough for its intended use. The .40 in a 3.5" barrel can be a handfull but the GDHP isn't so hot that I can't get a good follow up shot.
Honestly, I think that when it comes to searching for the ultimate SD load for a given caliber that we inevitably come to a point where we're splitting hairs. That isn't to say that it's not worth doing our homework when it comes to selecting a round. To the contrary, doing the research and choosing a load is the responsible thing to do. But, I believe that any of the aforementioned loads in this thread will perform consistently. The problem, is that we really have no idea what a bullet will do when it enters a target. There are too many variables. Clothing, bone, the angle of the shot.
So the advice that I was given a long time ago was to choose a round that is reliable and accurate from a reputable manufacturer and go with it and stay away from the exotic, whizbang over priced fodder. So, I choose Speer GDHP in .40. I tend to stay on top of the new products coming to the market which means I have the information I need to adjust my chosen round accordingly.
