View Full Version : Rust on my LC9

Well DUH. I should have known. My LC9 that I carry in a PJ Holster OWB kydex rides on my skin under my shirt. Of course it's blued steel and dummy forgot to check it for a couple of weeks of carrying and guess what I found today. On the serrations on the skin side of the slide I found a fair amount of rust. I immediately got after it with some Break Free CLP but alas some it still remains as pitting it seems. I love that PJ holster; it's so light and easy to carry but I guess if I want to carry it, I must resort to wearing a tee shirt or undershirt to protect it. What I did was to order a Silent THunder OWB with a full sweat shield. I use on for my P9 and it's a great holster for that gun too. Looks like I'm going to be a Silent Thunder kind of guy all the way now, but I do love that PJ OWB too. Maybe in winter, I may start wearing a tee under my regular shirt and can go back to it.
Any ideas on the pitting????

What did you go after it with in addition to the CLP?
A bronze brush? Anything?
A picture if you can capture it well enough might help. Being in the serrations it actually might be easier to hide if you have to get aggressive and go with like rust and blue remover and then reblue that section.
Has to be pretty bad to warrant going that far.

U could always get a holster with a sweat guard that protects the slide from ur skin
It's an LC9. Clean it, oil it, and don't sweat the minor pitting. It's been happened now.

It's like the first ding on the hood of a new car. You don't have to worry about the first one now. Just keep it clean and carry it every day.
I carry a Shield .40 everyday in a Remora IWB with a sweat shield, no problems to date with the pistol even remotely getting sweat on it. I would think that OWB would be less prone to haveing issues. You must sweat alot. But then again it is an LC9, you get what you pay for. The Smiths have a Melonite finish on them, not your typical blueing, much tougher finish.

Try the old steel wool and oil method, if it is still there then possible that it is pitting
Just put some RIG (rust inhibiting grease) on it and rub it in good, then a couple of times a week wipe down with silicone oil cloth/rustysrag, etc
If its really deep pitting then you may want to try reblueing or getting dura/cera kite done
But as others have said just carry it cause now the first cosmetic blemish has happened

Good advice folks. Hate to use steel wool or wire brush at this point but I sure may look into duracote or one of the others. Be glad to get my Silent Thunder holster in so maybe this won't happen anymore. Really like the gun and how it feels though and that PJ holster I was carrying is so light, you hardly know you're wearing it. The Silent THunder is almost as light and the sweat shield should help a lot.

I wear a wife beater t-shirt, even under a regular t-shirt to keep the gun grip away from my skin.

If you go with steel wool use 0000 steel wool and soak it with Hoppes. Don't rub. Gently wipe. Allow the Hoppes to soak over night then wipe the slide dry and oil it.

^^^Ditto. Paul at PJ will make an OWB holster with a sweat shield if you want it.
