I'm looking for a set of night sites for my CM 40. I have found a few but they say that they are something that has to be factory installed????
Is this because the front sight looks like it is melted/fused to the slide rather than held on by a screw/screws?

Sort of . . .
Most manufacturers only offer sights designed to be installed in dovetail slots. As you have noted, only the rear CM sight is in a dovetail.
At least one manufacturer (Trijicon) offers a night sight that mounts in the front holes of the CM and CW series Kahrs. http://www.kahr.com/Sights/Kahr-CWCM-Trijicon-Night-Sights.asp
The Trijicon front sight is actually easier to install than the usual dovetail version.
Reviewing the Kahr catalog listing (http://www.kahr.com/Sights/ALL/Sights.aspx) will help you identify your options for sights that you can install on Kahr products.
Reportedly, the XS Big Dot Sights (http://www.kahr.com/Sights/Kahr-New-Big-Dot-Tritium-Sights.asp) can also be purchased directly from the XS folks in a version that will mount to the holes in CM and CW slides if you contact them directly (http://xssights.com/). Officially, they only offer a dovetail version and expect you to have dovetail slots cut in your slide by a gunsmith.
As you have noted, the variety of front sights readily available is part of what you give up by selecting a CM or CW rather than one of the more expensive versions of the Kahr pistols. Arguably, it is the only significant difference since there don't seem to be any performance limitations as the result of the other differences.

The front sight is easy. I hear a standard Glock sight pusher may not work on the rear.

Dawson Precision also makes sights for the CW/CM guns.

This is what I used to change out the rear sights on my CM40.

Did it work with the standard blocks?
I had tried to find out if some of these tools worked for the Kahr and you are the first person to say yes.

Damn. Something else I will have to spend money on.
My CM40 shoots low. I have ordered a laser bore sighter which will tell me if it is me or the gun.
If the tool shows the aim to be low, I may just replace the rear sight with a higher one to cure it.
