Buffalo Barnes and Corbon DPX Update

I know some of you like the solid copper hollow points in your P380s. I recently had the chance to do a head to head test with both.

nice test, nice photos. the all copper bulletis IMO simply awesome.bht BB does a better jb for sure andI guess it could be attributed to the higher velocity of the +Pbut the P380 kahr can take that. I love corbon ammo but ifthey wereboth on the shelfI would go with tthe BB barnesround, proof is in the puddin.

man you had me going to buffalo bore site ready to order some ammo but i dedided to check and see what i had in p380. guess what its bb barnes. one of the nice things about being 70 is you forget doing something and get to have fun doing it again. good test tks

tim sundles with bb strongly recomends his 100gr hardcast flat nose for penetration in 380 and i have been carrying buffalo barnes and flatnose alternating in mag. if you get a chance how about a review of flat nose. i do not mind having a box sent to you if you don't have any.

The Underwood +P with 90-grain Gold Dots is pretty good, too. Price-wise, it's hard to beat, as well. It will be nice when ammo is widely available and decently priced again.

I bought 50-round boxes of the +P GD's from Underwood for about $25 or so each after Bruce's tests on that. It's stout stuff, too!

I have no interest in shooting lead in my Walther/Kahr barrel. :p I do appreciate the offer though. Not sure what we would really discover by testing other than the total penetration depth.

Actually, any of these 5 should have all the penetration I require. I like that some even tumble. I have one of these 5 loaded in my P380.

There is almost no chance that those are the same bullets. Lower velocities do not cause petals to come off a Barnes XPB.

I worked for Barnes for 3 1/2 years. No way will petals peel and break like that at <1,000 fps.

look at the photo the pedals just did not open, they never came off, they are still there. Would ike to see more tests if possble but I wouldnot loose faith in the Barnes bullets. But the other bullets won that match that day for sure..

Having seen many thousands of expanded XPBs, I can't recall seeing only half the petals open. Does not compute for me. Sorry.

Barnes designs its bullets to open at standard velocities. Testing is done by firing examples into water during production. Machinery is adjusted as necessary to meet performance standards.

These results are very puzzling. Corbon does a good job with its load development, and this test appears to meet standard velocity requirements. At 21,500 standard pressure, the cartridge is on the wimpy side, although many of the guns designed for this cartridge were blowbacks. Now that locked breech quality firearms are available, an increase in pressure for ammo for these new guns will increase velocities for better terminal performance.

The .380 is still really the bottom level of performance for self defense. Bullet performance at lower velocities has wider variations than with higher velocities.

corbon told me some time back when the developed the dpx 380 rounds, that their test guns was two kel teks, as back then there was just not alot of 380 micro's out there.

Our .380 DPX ammunition is loaded to maximum pressure according to SAAMI standards. If people desire to use an over pressure round, they must be willing to accept the possible consequences. We don't want anybody getting hurt from an overloaded round, so we stick to SAAMI pressure for the .380 caliber.

I like the stats of the BB +Ps but I just ran a box through my P380 and the accuracy sucked. Not sure why the pattern opened up so much, but it was no where close to the standard Federal rounds I use. So I'm going back to standard ammo. Expansion only counts if you hit your target.

All handguns are relatively poor "stoppers" regardless of caliber or bullet used. Shot placement and sufficient penetration are paramount, all else is secondary.
The wife's P380 holds BB hardcast as we'd rather have a non-expanding bullet that reaches the vitals than an expanding bullet that might not.

WOW, I know the feeling. Just started CC at a ripe old age of 70. Used to carry open 30 years ago and just stopped. Like you (Re) exploring gun sites and articles is joyful

I keep a CZ 83 in my Jeep in Texas 100% of the time within easy reach legally.

I use Buffalo Bore .380 100 gr. Hardcast Flat Nose ammo in it. It has proven accurate and reliable in that pistol.
