I recently picked up an older blackened P9 that looked like someone's stepchild. It has some serious wear on the finish and old Trijicon night sights.
I'm thinking about making it a pet project and doing something different. Should I have it Magna-Ported? XS Big Dot sights? How should I have it refinished...Robar? I thought about having all the edges rounded off more and making it a KickArse concealment gun.
I'm open to any thoughts and/or suggestions. This is going to be a John Hammond Gun. Let's dream big...sky's the limit.

Ok I had a thought but it never made it here. Oh well it went something like this. Shoot it, see what it needs, then work the cosmetics. A special set of grips would be a start, then move on.

* A carry gun should ideally be dark. Birdsongs Black T finish works well. Beyond that...nickle is about as durable as they come, maybe in a brushed matte finish. Kahr even offered a nickle finish at one time.
W.E. BIRDSONG INC- PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR FIREARMS AND METAL (http://www.black-t.com/)
* IMHO porting is a bad ideal on carry guns as it pushes the muzzle flash up not out. Don't do it.
* Sights are almost superfluous on a small carry gun, but my personal favorites are the Mepro Tru Dots in green. My aged eyes pick them up quickly in just about any light.
* I'm not sure any more rounding or softening will yield real benefits.
* Perhaps a laser module and a quality holster to hold both would be money better spent.
Hot Pink... :D
Good luck with your project.

I vote for the full melt to round all the corners, magna port (most reports is that it really works more like a flash suppressor due to the breaking up of the flash into smaller components), and NP3 coating of slide and striker(so you get less friction when running it dry and dark, lifetime finish). Then reworking the grip for custom fit for your hand.
I'm more for subtle look on guns.....So if it were my project. I would leave the edges(the P9 has awesome lines) and go with XS Big Dots and Magna-Porting. As for the finish, Duracoat Semiglosss black (http://www.houtsenterprises.net/dur_blacks.html) as the base. Then I'd add highlighted ghost flames from the ports and muzzle  like these:

Ghost Flames???? I want some... PS those are flames, not ghost flames. Ghost flames disappear until you get close. Sorry grew up building scooters.

What about some digital camo DuraCoat paint job? I have always wanted to do something like this. Maybe a future project.

I just never did that. I always thought that I could shoot better right side up. That being said I know people who shoot better with an upside down rifle.

IYG- I think we need a photo so we can have something to grasp and wrap our minds around this project. I guess the birdman sights are out, people thought they were dumb. I'd like the full melt down look, I think Jocko mentioned Accurate Iron?. I'll reserve judgement on the magna port until I shoot mine. I love the look and if it knocks the edge of recoil I'd go for that too. Fast turn around. I acknowledge the gas and debri in the face worry but short of shooting from your coat pocket and catching your jacket on fire I'm willing to take my chances on that. I'll know more, I'm gonna take some pics shooting mine to get a grasp on that muzzle flash deal.
I'd definitely go XS big dot sights without question. I'll be happy to contribute some trick grips if I can find a gun to fit them too, lots of options, colors, inlays to consider based on what the final gun finish turns out to be. I'm really not into unnatural colors, don't like green or desert sand or that stuff. Something different might be cool, you know blue, while I respect the earlier request for hot pink, I don't think that would blow my dress up. I love duo tone, maybe black slide and NP3 or some sort of lighter colored lower or vise versa. Post a pic, lets get the wheels greased up and turning.

this P9 a stainless slide or carbon blued steel? I would make sure that the gun is totally reliable and then indeed go for it. ou might spend a few bucks here getting the results you want but you can sure make one kick ass semi and u seem to be willing to put some bucks into this project. You could make one super covert P9 also.
I sent you a PM, if you do it , do it right, that way you willnever have to say, I wish now I had done this or done that.. As they say it only costs a nickel more to go first class:third:

Here's the step-child P9...
As you can see the left side has some serious holster wear/scratch right under the "K". The night sights are old Trijicon's but still have a little glow. The slide doesn't have the word "stainless" stamped anywhere. Yet all the places that have serious wear seem to show a stainless underbelly.
Just to commit myself I took a Dremel and a wirebrush tip to the slide and it didn't do any significant damage to the finish.

Doesn't look that bad to me, looks good. Perfect specimen for your lets have some fun project. Does it shoot good as is? I'd not refer to it as the step child, it may remember this down the road when it comes out of the make over shop and try to make you pay for your lag of love.

Very good point. I need to show my affection by molding it into one of the best Kahr guns out there. I'm going to get out and shoot it today or tomorrow and see how she does "as is".

Dang you, I'd love to find a P40 in fixer upper condition and price. Lots of good stuff here. I too have heard that porting is not for carry guns, but what about this: Take one of those new Vortex flash suppressors for an AR and tap it and port it to fit your gun, these things are incredible, probably have to shorten it a bit a longer barrel too. Robar or Bowie Tactical can do the frame. J-point red dot melted into the slide. Birdsong for the coating. You can pay for it all by leasing it to the next Sci-Fi action flick. Mag well with lanyard loop and while your at it you might as well add a tactical rail. Round trigger face and take up slack, lighten slightly. Oh yeah, have "IN YOUR GRILL" engraved into the slide.

Well I took the pet project out today and all I can say is WOW...!!!
This gun was smooth as silk and right on target. The trigger was much smoother than the CW9 and PM9 I shot along side of it. This is going to make an excellent base for a new creation.

I see good things to come for that previously labeled step child. Good things.

I also fell in love with texasguntrader.com great place for used stuff, if you don't mind sifting through it. There is also a store just outside of Killeen that is stellar, been a few years since I've been there though (they're still open, just saw them on the news after Ft Hood). Bachman Pawn and Gun will even run stuff in Shotgun News, I agree there's plenty here.
