View Full Version : Changed my grip and greatly improved my accuracy
Ok, not a handgun guy until recently but I slept at a Howard Johnson Express one night...
I initially learned (poorly, obviously) some basic grip styles and chose one that felt natural with my CW9 and for the past few months, I've struggled at the range to hit the paper consistently, let alone have any kind of decent groupings at about 15-20 feet. I finally had enough and did more research, found a grip that made SENSE with regards to maintaining good support and comfort and I have to say that not only did EVERY round hit my paper (I print my own 8 1/2 x 11 targets), my groupings were averaging about 4" -6" (I figure that's good for starters). Man, do I feel better :)...
I was about to sell everything and paint a bullseye on my shirt. I even showed-up my wife for a change.

Good for you ... you stuck with it until you got it right. It sounds like the gun has been doing everything it's supposed to be doing. Welcome, and keep up the good reports.

Well, don't keep us in suspenders. . .what grip did you change from and to.
Inquiring minds want to know.

All I can say is that I wasn't placing the "meat" of the palm of my left hand (I'm a righty) in the open space of the left side of the grip in between the fingers and "meat" of the palm of my right hand. That also resulted in a more natural placement of my left thumb, parallel with my right thumb. This really steadied the gun for me. I can't say exactly what I was doing before but it was close, although the whole placement of the "meat" of my left palm was incorrect. A silly handgun newb mistake.
OK, Jocko, time to jump in with comments about meat and palms....

That's funny! I was thinking the same thing about Jocko before I even got to the last line. The innuendoes is endless. :D
Yeah, anytime I see ANY threads with innuendos, I always wait for Jocko to chime in. Always good reading...

I actually have one but removed it about 2 months ago when I installed the CT. I've contemplated trimming it to fit so I can re-install it. Good idea. I'll add that to my list of things that I need to do.:)

My offhand groups improved when I tried the 60/40 grip. That was 40% of my grip form my trigger hand and 60% of my grip from my support hand. I don't remember where I heard it but it seemed to work for me.
My offhand groups improved when I tried the 60/40 grip....
I believe that my change in grip did result in a higher % of support from my support hand (no pun intended).
Perhaps if I had read what I researched to BEGIN WITH, I'd have been ok. :p

I might be a minority in this aspect but I find SHO grip gives me much better accuracy with both my P380 and PM9. I use a standard two handed grip when shooting any of my 1911's or glocks but shoot them pretty well SHO only, I guess whatever works for you.
SHO will be my next task but I simply want to be more comfortable with my accuracy 2-handed.
