The first link is to two short animations of the crash.

The second link is an actual approach and visual landing to RW 28R at SFO flown by a Lufthansa A380 crew. (the 777 crashed on RW 27L)

note: although it's a different type aircraft the flight procedures (callouts, etc) are very similar.

The regulations REQUIRE a totally automated landing when making a CAT III (ie. zero visibility) landing. This is only allowed if both the aircraft and the airport (runway) have been certified for CAT III as well as all the crew members (pilots).

Do you know it the SF facility is approved for CAT III. I would guess it is since it's a major international airport. At any rate it's academic, since zero-zero conditions didn't exist in this instance and I would bet the crew were not certified.

The 28L rw isn't cat II or III certified but 28R is...Here's the approach plate.

Notice for category IIIC a/c there are no minimums... :)

Too bad it wasn't zero/zero...they might have landed on the runway... :)

Just shows the news is quick to jump on anything without knowing facts or even using "common sense". Perhaps they need to do homework before being "the first with breaking news".

And ya' know, the Onion wouldn't have done that. They have a properly sarcastic approach to the news.

College humor......read the names and think about it. If they couldn't figure that out they are stupid and deserve to be duped.

Grade school or less stupid. Doesn't deserve to be characterized as humor.
