View Full Version : What Ammo does your P380 prefer?

I'm noticing a HUGE difference in FTF / FTRB & Slide Lock issues all dependent on what ammo I'm using... So I'm wondering what ammo (FMJ & Defense) works best for most people here???
Thanks,
B~
The more rounded or pointed the bullet the better. I tried some PMC Starfire JHP which had a wide blunt opening and my P380 couldn't digest it hardly at all. Some folks also have issues with WWB and its flat-head FMJ. Ordinary FMJ isn't a problem.

Just about any ball ammunition works well in the P380. I've also had good performance using Speer Gold Dot 90 gr. H.P. ammo and Remington Golden Saber 102 Gr. H.P. What works well in one gun may not work well in another.

Fortunately mine will eat pretty much anything but seems particularly happy with the 100gr. hardcast Buffalo Bore. A bit pricey but it seems to pack a hell of a punch.

Ball ammo and Hornady CD. Doesn't like flat one WWB

My P380 will only be 100% with Hornady CD because of the pointed tip.
The first two rounds off the 6 round tip "nose dive" into the bottom of the feed ramp.
I found out yesterday that I can load PMC wide hollow points in the bottom 4 places and they will feed and fire.
I still carry 6 + 1 CD.
Later,
HES
PS I tried 5, but no feed.

I just tried a box of Buffalo Bore Barnes ammo and no problems feeding but the accuracy was horrible. So I am going to stick the Federal ball rounds I've been using that might be slower but all fit in one ragged hole

I like the 90-grain Gold Dots... bonded. :)
I carry the Buffalo Bore +P Gold Dots and got some of the Underwood +P Gold Dots... more oomph than BB and cheaper by the 50-round box(when you can find them in stock these days!)... for use after I run out of BB Gold Dots. See my avatar. The BB is impressive and like shooting +P 9mm, but I believe in the best available for the Bad Guys.
For the range, my P380 will digest just about anything. I don't shoot steel cases, though.

I guess I"m lucky since my new P380 seems to be able to run anything I put through it.

Likewise, my P380 takes any ammo, as long as it is brass.

nice to hear good reports on the little gun that can!!!
what I do find interesting that you guys with these perfect P380's, I wold bet u can take those exact same guns and put them in somne uttter peoples hands and they would have issues. So IMO it tells me also that the shooter and the litlte gun that can have mated up properly to each other..:Amflag2:

Proper lubrication and cleaning is a value. I have owned many guns and had little to no problem with any of them. Proper shooting stance is also an issue.

We are hovering just below the 200 round mark for the Wife's P380. Cleaning and lube essential at this point. The gun likes WWB, Aguila 95 gr. hollow points (which are almost the same bullet shape as WWB), Fed hydroshocks, as well as my handloaded 95 gr. plated round nose FMJ. We are nearing the light at the end of the tunnel for a proper break in. We will shoot the hell out of it.

Proper shooting stance is also an issue.
What shooting stance do I need for my J frame to work? :p
Obviously you have to have some kind of grip on it but any gun sensitive to stance would not make it in my collection.

I find when shooting either my P380 or PM9 I"m so much better with a one handed grip and stand. No any of my 1911's or glocks I handle much better two handed. None of my handguns have any problem running any ammo, maybe I"m just lucky. I take that back, I have a Buckmark pistol that prefers CCI mini-mag.

Good: Federal, Blazer, Winchester
Bad: TulAmmo, Fiocchi
The difference I've found that causes the jam is at the collar where the extractor grabs on to, nothing to do with the bullet shape.
