OK not a big fan of the trigger and its a bit ugish but my wife's MP 9 smoothed out nice after 300 rnds. I think it is better when we are out together to have the same gun in the same caliber. Yeah its over thought out protection, but the capacity of 17+1 in 9mm in a manageable size is another reason for the purchase. Now I must wait 10 days...

I don't own one but I've held a few and I like the M&P platform. Looks way more better than a block and they run.
It was my choice when the dept transitioned from Beretta 40's. Firearms instructor wanted Springfield XD's. We ended up with Block 21's.
At the time it was a good choice. Nobody made holsters and duty gear for the Smith or the XD. As it was we had to wait because we had 45's. Everything else was plentiful.
I bet it's very pleasant for your wife to shoot too.

Many folks put an "APEX" trigger kit in their M&P for a better trigger. I bought the Pro version, and am love the trigger that comes with it. You take up some slack with almost no resistance, then come to a spot where the trigger stops, squeezing about 4-5 lbs then gives you a very crisp trigger break. Gives you a chance to realign your sights, before the gun fires.
It's very nice for at the range when trying to get nice groups, kind of like shooting a revolver single action. Not sure how useful the process would be in a gunfight, but it's nice to know when and where the trigger is going to break. Unlike the Kahr, where it's always a surprise, as in there is no feedback in the trigger to let you know the gun is about to fire. The Pro is the 5" barrel competition version of the M&P.
Along with the nicer trigger, you get a green fiber optic front sight. I guess LEO's are taking a liking to it. I've not shot a standard M&P, so I don't know how the trigger feels.
You can install the APEX trigger system yourself, there are You Tube videos showing how to do it, or send it to APEX, or have a gunsmith install it, whatever you are comfortable with. Every review I've watched on it, gives it the thumbs up, and I can't find any negative reviews on it. I think the kit is around $100, plus whatever installation fees you are charged. You Tube also has videos on fixing a gritty trigger, and other modifications you can do without buying parts.

I heard the latest versions out of S&W will not allow an Apex trig to be installed. Could be a myth though. My wife has the Pro Series. I have been told by many to save the $ because the non pro guns shoot very similar so not worth the $ for the FO front sight. Since I am getting TFOs anyways, I figured I would go plain Jane..

I have the M&P9 fs that comes with night sights and upgraded trigger. It has really smooth recoil and nice trigger break with a reset I can find most of the time, the trigger can feel gritty while dry firing but I never feel it at the range. It is currently with S&W to have the front sight repaired/replaced after the white halo fell out, 6-8 weeks. I've since been outfitting my new PPQ M2 with mags, holder and holster for an upcoming class. I think the M&P will be the back-up from now on.

My M&P .40 full size had a pretty gritty triger when new but with several hundred rounds down the pipe it feels much smoother now....I considered the Apex trigger mod when it was new but now I'm glad I didn't waste the money....
The pistol with the small backstrap fits my hand perfectly and is the most comfortable pistol to shoot that I own with it's light weight, ergonomic feel and 15 + 1 capacity that digests any ammo tried it's my go to gun for home defense and range shooting....

Thanks for the uplifting report on the M&P series. I hope mine is a workhorse like many report them to be. I will drive that gun hard in the near future.
