View Full Version : CW9-mags won't stay "snapped" in

CW9 mags (I have 2 original Kahr mags) are very unpredictable. They snap in place and are fully seated. Then a few days later, the mag appears to be in place but it is not. I push on the bottom and sure enough,it has slipped out of the locked position. I might as well just have a single shot derringers should the need arise. My wife's CW9 does the same thing with every mag tried. Is there a cure for this?

So both guns won't hold none of the 3 or 4 mags you have?

Either you are inadvertently hitting the mag release button or you need a new mag catch installed. How do you carry and in what holster?
look here at part 17; http://www.kahr.com/Parts/Kahr-CW9.asp

Emailed Kahr and got a quick response from Jay who is sending 2 mag catches at no cost. At least I didn't have to send them in on my dime-this time! Mags popped loose no matter how they were carried. Pocket, purse, glove box, fanny pack. Played mix n' match with the mags, etc. approx. 300 rounds thru each gun.

Just received my brand new CW9, went to the range and the clip would not stay in. Went home broke the gun down to try and see if something was not working properly, but the clip seemed to snap in tight. Went back to the range but after the first shot, the clip hit the ground. Called Kahr and replacement mag catch is being mailed out.
I have to say, even with this issue right out of the box i like this gun a lot. These guns do seem to be a little particular about how they want to be treated be understand that to be due to their design and i am okay with that.

check to see if the mag base plate has a tad of clearance on the bottom of the mag well. It could be the mag well itself needs aslight trim. Odd that they all do that. Away to check toseeif the mag release buton is fully engaging is to look at the right side of the grtip with the mag out and notice the3 mag button is flush witht he frame. Installthe magazine, It should be flush, not sticking out a tad or nuttin. If it is, I wqould suggest bein u have a new release comming is to just slam themagazines in the gun a few dozen times and iuf there is a burr there, it will be gone. U might alo just polish with some 600+ grit paper that magazinetube cutut in case there is a burr there...
If u can insert the MAGAZINE and u cannot physically pull it out and then u shoot it and it falls out, the IMO it is shooter error, and ur thumb is hitting the release. Try shooting it left handed to see if it goes away any.

You can also strip a magazine and insert it with the slide back or taken off and actually look down in there and see how much the mag catch is engaging.
Should be able to tell if the little shelf/catch just isn't deep enough or if there's something preventing it from going into the mag cut out far enough.

Clearance is there, can push and recess mag a tad farther. Button seems to be engaged, right side is actually recessed a bit with or without mag. clue? I remember when I first inserted the mag a few times it seemed soft but it clicks now and i cannot reproduce. Cannot pull mag out but with the grip i use it sure does take alot of effort to release the mag. Still possible though, if i can change the release at the range i will experement left handed.
Stripped gun and mag., shelf engages but not by much, at all. Plenty of room in mag with spring and bullets for the shelf to engage more than it is.
I am thinking the mag is escaping the catch from the recoil of the shot.

Sounds like it might be a bad catch. Since all the mags do the same thing that makes some sense too.

IMO wait for the new mag release catch and then see what happens. The catch can't go in the magazine tube to far or it will hinder the follower frommoving upward.the recoil has nuttin to do with what is happening to the magazine. In looking at my mag catch, it is totally flush with the right side of the grip.
Wait for the new magazine catch, yours could be out of spec. It happens.

I have seen a few cases where the magazine catch was defective... metal too soft. It happens with parts. My second P380 had a "soft" catch and the ledge failed. Kahr sent me a new catch and that fixed it.
Harbor Freight sells a 4-piece set of picks with orange handles for a couple of bucks on sale. The one on the bottom with the right-angled bend is best for popping that spring out and getting it back in place. You can even catch the spring and keep it out of the way while switching the springs out and just let the spring down back into its place.

Think I figured out your problem, try using magazines instead of clips. Clips just don't feed properly in the Kahr pistols. Hope this helps.

Good to know, it doesn't take much to convince me to take a trip to Harbor Freight.
I should have said magazine, what is a clip or how is it different than a mag?
