View Full Version : Abnormal barrel wear?

I have three pictures attached to try and show you the wear on my CM9 barrel. Not the best quality, but quick pics from my phone to show the wear.
I bought it lightly used, (unknown round count) but no wear marks when field stripped. I have since put ~300 rounds through it and noticed this wear when I took it apart to clean it.
First image shows some rounding of the edge on the front of the barrel hood. Little to no burr left, you can't catch a fingernail on it.
The second two show at the rear of the barrel where it looks to me like the slide is hitting it. There is a burr at this spot. It's hard to see on the second picture, but you can see the unnatural taper. The third you can see the shiny spot from the wear.
My questions are, is this normal? and can I just lightly sand, then polish up these areas? or does this need to go back to Kahr and have a checkup?
Thanks!

I'd send that same post to customer service via email and get their input. The little burr on the back of the barrel hood is pretty common and a little sand and polish there should take care of it. If you do nothing it will eventually stop and not get beat up anymore. Sometimes it's a sharp little burr and it's nice to knock the edge off.
I suspect the same is true on the front but that could be a peening issue and they have wanted them back for that. I had one years ago that they replaced the slide due to a fitting issue.
Can't say for sure in your case, I'd let them decide.
I suspect your fine but cost nothing to get their opinion.

Thanks, I did send them a quick email with the same information. Just wanted some more opinions while I waited for a response. I know this Kahr has tighter tolerances than a lot of my other handguns so it may wear/break-in a little more, but these two spots seemed like a fair amount of wear for 300 rounds.

My CM9 doesn't show anything like that front or rear and I have more than a thousand rounds through it. I'll bet that Kahr calls it in.

Just looked at my CM9. No marks and over 1000 rds.
I don't like the looks of the front / top locking area. I don't know why those corners would want to push back like that.
The hood area is pretty much normal, Kahr seems to fit them with bit of a wedge shape on the right side, to seat itself naturally. That will kick up a little burr, but you can remove the burr and that will be the end of it.
I'd call, and/or show those pics to cust. service

I concur with Bawanna in regards to the area on the rear of the barrel hood.
My guess is that the marks in the first photo are from the hood contacting the slide near the muzzle end of it. If I'm correct, you should be able to find two contact points on the slide in the are of the rearmost hole for the front sight.
You could probably fix the front portion of the slide so that it doesn't gouge the barrel hood, but it might be better to send it back and have Kahr handle it.

Greg

Thanks all.
Jay took care of me, I have sent it back to have them take a look. It may be nothing, or it may have turned into a major problem, either way it will hopefully be taken care of.
Might have them put night sights on while it's there....
