View Full Version : If you travel with knives, check if it's legal first

As you probably know, knives are regulated almost as much as guns, and when traveling with one, you may be breaking laws over blade length, or how it opens. To the rescue: http://www.knifeup.com/
They have a section that deals with knife laws in each of the states. If you carry anything larger than a small pocket knife, or one that is assisted opening, or "gravity" opened (can be opened by flicking your wrist) then it might be a good idea to review the laws on the states you may be passing through or visit. As with most other crimes, ignorance of the law, is not an excuse. I'd hate to see one of us normally law abiding people, unknowingly break some law, and end up having their vacation or travel ruined by having a cop spot the knife during a routine traffic stop.
Most of these knives are legal, when kept in the home, it's taking them on the road that will get you in trouble.

Funny this topic should come up as just last Monday night I went with a couple buddies to a Phillies game. On the way in I got stopped and told I had to leave my mini multipurpose pen knife, that is on my key ring in the car if I wanted to come inside the stadium. I'm so used to having it on me that I forgot it was even there. I looked at the guy and said your kidding right? I mean the whole blade must be a full inch and a half long. Nope it can't come in he says looking like man, I really don't want to have to do this but my boss is watching me so give me a break, I had to laugh as this poor bastard is probably not to happy that he has to enforce this nonsense so I took it off the key ring placed it behind one of the trash cans outside the stadium and when I came out I picked it back up. The funny thing is we were in one of the business suites and I saw at least three other food instruments I could have done a lot more damage with then my little mini multi tool, if I chose to do so. Of all the years I've owned that little tool and had it hanging on my key ring that is the first time I've ever been asked to remove it. It's getting crazy out there folks, because I could have very well had my P3at in my front pocket and no one would have ever noticed.

Even when and where certain knifes are legal because you know state laws on whats legal. NC has a wording that's says it has to be an ordinary pocket knife with no more than a 4.5" handle on a folder and it is not covered with our ccl.

Have you seen what they are doing at all NFL games this year?...Nothing can come in the stadiums in any kind of bag, even a woman's purse....You have to leave your bag at an offical NFL kiosk and put the contents in a CLEAR plastic bag with the NFL logo on the side....They don't charge you anything to use it but you must return it to the SUPER CROWDED kiosk in order to get your bag back with a ticket stub....
Season ticket holders were provided a bag before the season started but the NFL didn't do a very good job of getting the word out to the general public so people were not expecting it....I went to the first Falcons pre season game with my son and his girlfriend and they didn't ask either of us to empty our pockets but his girlfriend had to stand in line for over an hour to get her clear NFL bag before we could get in and by that time the game was almost to the end of the first quarter...If you go to a NFL game be prepared to wait or better yet don't take anything in the stadium that won't fit in your pockets....

They have been giving away those clear bags out here in Seahawk land.
I've never been to a football game, this completely insures that I never will.
The best seat in any football game or any game for that matter is the recliner in front of the TV.
Come to think of it I haven't been in the new Mariner stadium either and it's been there a long time. I'm sure they are pulling the same crap so probably won't go there either.
Pretty soon we'll have TSA to get into the freaking grocery store, no matter I don't go there either.

Been that way since 9/11 at Giants stadium! Gotta love the large screen TV's! It paid for itself compared to attending the game parking, food and drinks
Yes the terrorist won on 9/11. They won even more Since Barry was in charge!:behindsofa:

I agree the best seat for a football game is at home or at a friends home!
I DVR the games and watch them at my own pace and see all the replays I want as many times as I want.
Plus the food and drink is cheaper and much better.

I went into a federal bldg yesterday and tried to get an answer before handing over my pocket knife.
They kind of joked about it, and put it under something to "check" it and handed it back after I passed thru the metal detector.
I left and went back later and the 2nd time thru it was different guys who were all business, and went thru the whole airport type stuff, belt off, etc.
I went into a fed court house once and put a $100 knife in their drawer, for safe keeping, and when I left and tried to pick it up...it was gone, nothing in the drawer but $5 cheapo's.
Won't do that again!
I think now they keep anything they don't like.

Thanks TheTMan, I just checked out the knife web you listed it looks good, and will definitely help when we hit the road with our fifth wheel.

I don't know what in the hell you guys are talking about. There is no such thing as an illegal gun or knife, unless your caught with one. :)

Very True Muggsy. I traveled all over New Jersey and Mass. New York etc. with a 9mm loaded with Black Talons. No CC permit, (they didn't have them back then). Kept it in the console of the van where it was real handy.
Just a family on a vacation, nothing suspicious, no NRA or GOP stickers or anything. Was real careful to watch my speed and turn signals and kept a lookout for those little speed trap towns. Never had a problem. I got into some neighborhoods in downtown Baltimore, Philly, and DC, that I was glad I had it.
Knives are kind of tricky though, I forget I have mine on, it's just part of my EDC. It's assisted opening, and is probably illegal in many places. So if a cop saw it I could get hassled big time. And laws very a lot from state to state, and even town to town.
