I found this a worthwhile 55 minutes of my time. Can't say for you, but give it a chance despite that it's on PBS: Bill Moyers and that the guest/author - Mark Leibovich - is associated with the NY Times.
About the rot in DC - and elsewhere: http://billmoyers.com/episode/full-show-mark-leibovich-on-americas-gilded-capital/

Tell me something that I don't know. Money makes the world go around. It always has. It always will.

I actually quite agree with you. To me, it seems to be about balance. I believe we will never have a "perfect" situation (no graft, corruption, money influence) so I accept some as part of the way it is.
But maybe it's a matter of degree. When is too much too much? When does the complacent, accepting "sheeple" if you will (not suggesting you are one of them) have enough. I do believe the situation in DC - and elsewhere - is on a increasing hell-bent march to a (bad) extreme.
Perhaps a poor analogy: The original 13 colonies "accepted" similar from England...until it got to a certain extreme.
PS
Looks like I missed any mention last week about your mom passing. My sincere condolences. I lost mine when she was in her early 40s and so my kids never had one of their Grandmothers.
