Bawanna isn't the only handy one on this site!! Well I'm not exactly at his level, but happy with the finished product. I took my old Stevens single shot 20 and gave it a dramatic facelift. This gun belonged to my late great grandfather from Kentucky. The gun isn't necessarily worth anything, but means alot to me. I have contemplated restoring it for several years. Just always thought I should leave it how he had it. So last week I decided to take it back to its former glory and possibly better.
Now for the pictures. Some of the pictures are labelled by clicking on them you will be able to see the steps.
Please post comments, would like some feedback.

Another thing, I have used this gun for several years for my squirrel hunting. Really only thing I like to use if I want to guarantee some meat. Light weight and has a tight pattern.

Thanks so much for all the pics ... I really enjoyed looking at them. It looks like it was a lot of work, though a labor of love I'm sure. I assume it's a shotgun, but what gauge?

Before scrolling down to see the "after" pics I would have said let it be. But after seeing the beauty of the wood I'd say you've done a FANTASTIC job! I've got an old Mossberg .22 I picked up last year that I plan on doing the same thing to. Just hope the wood underneath is even close to what you discovered.

addictedhealer,
Nice work and thanks for taking the time to do the photos:)
The color casehardening on the receiver looked decent in some of the photos: was that not the case in person or did you just prefer another look for it?

Thanks.
The hardening wasn't bad but the receiver wasn't in great shape. Most of the receiver was very very dull. I have another single shot that has beautiful case hardening and I wouldn't change it. With this shotgun the receiver was in bad shape. So I decided to completely strip it. I really like the black look of the receiver now, so I would do it again like I did.
I think with the color of the wood the blackened receiver and barrel really pop and I like that.

Sure looks good. I also have a Stevens 20 I got from my dad this summer. It needs restored also. Beside's the 20 ga I also got a Springfield (Savage/Stevens) 84C 22, that was my mothers. I have it finished and it came out great. I had the barrel ceracoated, refinished the stock and replaced any needed parts. I took it to the range 2 weeks ago to test fire it. I put 10 rounds down range all in the black at 25 yds. That relly is pretty good because I have a hard time seeing front sights that are all black.
