I heard this story today from a guy who was fixing a chip in my windshield. Real story:
It was a dark evening and the chip guy just arrived at home to find that there was a masked adult male standing at the bottom of the chip guy's back porch steps with big screw driver in hand. The chip guy approached his porch and asked the masked man what he was doing. The masked man raised the screw driver over his head as if ready to stab the chip guy. The chip guy, said he had two choices with no time to make a choice...make a run for the door risking being stabbed in the back.... or grab the mans arm and fight. The chip guy decided to grab the man's arm and wrestled him down to the ground......
What would you do?

Never been in that position so I have no clue what I would do.
I like to think I would at least draw my little neck knife and stick him with it a few times. Possibly after stickin him with the knife a couple times I would draw my K9 and stick it in his throat and ask him politely if he wishes to continue the altercation or wait calmly for the LEO.

well being I am 70 and that I carry my PMJ9 24/7 and so upon arriving home and I find this pr!ck in my back yard and he draws a knife. I would try to at least put some distance between he and I so I could draw my trusty PMJ9 and give him his choice of dyin or livin. In my yard and with a knife, he is basically bought and paid for, but I would give him a choice. If he ran I would call 911 and report exactly what I did and what he did and what he looks like yadda yadda and let the law do its thing. No hero on my part and certainly not wanting to be a G. Zimmerman either. At my age what figtht I have left is not gonna win two many fights either. I would like to think when he seen my trusty PMJ9 that he would decide that a gun trumps a knife about any day. But again that would be his call to make...

Agreed....sounds like he was lucky, or stupid. Now, if he was in the dark, unseen, and he did that, well...............................

That's precisely what I thought the moment I read it ... stop and pull out a gun or go find a weapon ... and confront from a distance.

Jocko is right on. I don't venture out unarmed... even in and around the house, but I would never accost a MASKED man with any kind of weapon, especially if I were unarmed!

On the subject of masked men... I did sell my Walther TPH to a masked man at a gun show a couple of months ago. I've seen him every show since and talked with him several times. He seems to be a good masked man. A mask doesn't mean he's bad... a medical mask, anyhow.

For the most part....great answers gentlemen. I gave the story to you just as the chip guy gave it to me. Now I will tell you the rest of the story as he told me.
Some of you guys were very astute in wanting to know more before you gave your answer. It was wise to pose your clarifying questions.
I won't lie (at least not much)....but my initial reaction was that I would pull my gun.
So anyway, right then, the chip guy he told me the rest of his story.
He told me it was Halloween. He had the masked guy on the ground ready to break his arm. He realized that something was very strange because the masked guy went down so easily and was mumbling something that did not make any sense. The chip guy said his adrenalin was ramped up so much that he was not really paying much attention to what the guy was saying. Then it hit him.....he realized the masked man was saying his name...."It's Justin, It's Justin....." over and over again. It turned out that Justin was his brother-in-law and was pulling a Halloween prank on him. The chip guy was pissed....didn't like the prank at all. Justin's arm was in pain...almost broke.
The chip guy is a new grad, working as a window chip repairman until he gets accepted as a local Law Enforcement Officer which has been a family tradition for over 100 years in his family. He cautioned pulling a gun or knife too fast, but cautioned pulling one too slow. A Bright young man who will probably make a good LEO.
So that is the rest of the story. Good job guys.

Well, I would have immediately drawn my weapon (like garyb, Jocko, etc.), meanwhile retreating to the relative safety of my pickup truck, where I could safely call 911 for back-up.

Yes, and it's an interesting story-- and I wouldn't mess with chip guy either!

the masked guy though was not using his fokking brain IMO. It could have went the utter way and the shooter might have been dead right but he just shot his friend due to some stupid fokking prank. DUMB DUMB DUMB..Theonly person that knewit was a joke was the masked man, DUMB DUMB.
sometimes what startsout as a honest prank turns deadly. The chip guy IMO was in his right to shoot the fokker. I jus thope both were white and the masked man not black or we would be seein fat ass al aqnd hair lip jackson back on TVspouting racisim remarks.:Amflag2: Just sayin

I'd have felt really bad about having to bury Justin, but I'm sure that it would have been the last prank that he ever pulled. I worked third shift as a truck mechanic for about three years. Two nights a week I worked alone. I was torquing the heads on a Cummins diesel when a black truck driver sneaked up behind me to scare me. I damn near took off his head with the torque wrench when he yelled. That's as close to being white as he ever got. Pranks are very stupid things to pull.

Pranks when you are 3 or 4 feet tall are funny. Pranks when you are adult size will get you killed. I'm w/ muggsy, he might be in a world of hurt or worse had he been outside my home when I arrived that night. Gene pool would have been chlorined that night very likely.
Reminds me of an AFV video I saw once where some guy was sitting still on his porch scaring people when they came up w/ their kids to trick-or-treat. He caught one guy off guard and got his nose hammered real good. Served him right.

If you want to protect yourself, get a double-barrel shotgun and if there is ever a problem just walk out on the balcony, walk out and put that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts.

Veering off topic, but who cares: Ever notice how reloading is never addressed, either here by old Joe or in the movies/TV? What good is an unloaded gun, especially a double barreled one that just fired two shots and with a BG who can probably count that high?
Reminds me of a quiz question from a ground pounder Major, USMC:
Question: What's the first thing you do after a fire fight in which all the enemy are killed?
Answer: Reload.
But approaching a masked man of unknown mental/drug condition brandishing a hand weapon was senseless. Better to increase distance, regardless of how macho you think you are.

He NEVER should have approached a threat he knew was there. Big stupid on that. Also once the assailant has broached the 21' zone and in this case is up close and personal controlling his weapon is the better option. If you make the mistake of going for your weapon first you WILL be stabbed or cut several times, possibly fatally before your weapon speaks for the very first time.
Been there done that. I chose to control my assailants weapon first.
I'd have shooted him in the face. Where's the Col when you need answers to stuff like this??

I carry a bright flashlight that I would have used to blind him and order him away while keeping some distance.
After that it depends. Is any else threatened? Does the bad guy leave or attack?
If no one else is threatened it might be best to maintain a "safe" distance and call the police while telling the crook the police are on the way.
If I was not armed I might stay in my vehicle until the police arrived.
I am not a hero and have insurance.

If of-duty I revert to a me and mine attitude. The threat to others is not really my immediate problem. If family is with me escape and evade, others are on their own and not my issue

I'd lose my cape if I adhered to that philosophy. My family is first but goodness over evil prevails.
Damsels in distress or even underdog dudes in the clutches of evil, have no fear, I'm there for you. Just stay clear of the evils face and there will be a happy ending.

Family comes FIRST, LAST and ALWAYS. Once I have evacuated family first I will return to assist. But strangers are not a concern if family is still in harms way cape or no cape. To save strangers when family is at risk is unconscionable to me.
Based soley upon the OP's original post if you go for your weapon you have made a series of serious tactical mistakes and are going to feel what it is like to be stabbed and possibly expire. Plain and simple undeniable fact!

good for u, I hope if I ever get into a situation that I have u to step up to the front and to take care of things, as I will be retreating with my family and no family again I will still be retreating. No doubt there are exceptions to the rules but for me mostly. family first. ol; jocko second, bawanna (maybe third), all utters, well your own ur own. I won't be a G. Zimmerman and be hog tied in my home for 2 years. More than likely if more people would mind their own business most things would work out. again exceptions to the rules. I hate scenarios so I wll not try to present one.
How does one really know goodness over evil???/ Just sayin. I think if u draw ur gun, u have now made a definite statement. No fokking REDLINE IN THE SAND sh!t like our POTUS does...

I feel the opposite. If people would get involved more instead of trying to get youtube video on their cell phone we might take a bite out of crime.
We've been here before a few times. I'm a get involved kind of guy, not necessarily always bad things. Stop to help a stranded motorist, just general act like a freaking human being stuff and it can bite ya on the back side.
I don't get involved because I carry a gun! I carry a gun because I get involved.
And thanks Jocko. # 3 on your save list is high praise to me. I'm truly blessed.

problem. I understand. this is an individual choice for all. I have been armed robbed over 35 years ago in my business by two individuals. I feel I know what a gun in ur face looks like. A hero I ain't. I have said that before, hadI had a firearm on my side, I tyhink they would have shot me and then took what they wanted. I would stop any day and help a stranded motororists or a neighbor in need.I was raised to do that, . that ain't a hero thing, that is just a normal thing that I do feel everyone here would do the same thing. Wehave LEO's on this forum who have been there done that . They know, they know what an adrenalin dump is to. My goal most every day is to be home every nite on time wit my family. I ain't gonna go lookin for trouble or to be a George Z either. I suspect a cop has the same intention every day that I a commoer has and that is to be home for supper with the family. :behindsofa:

Bawanna I am not saying I won't help. But if family is with me, and in harms way, they take ABSOLUTE priority. Once they have been moved to an area of complete and total safety then I will provide whatever assistance I can.
Family safety must ALWAYS take priority over stranger safety. IMHO. In my POV at night I will most likely call 911 for broken down motorists. In my area we have had way too many attacks, robberies, rapes, and murders of good hearted folks stopping to help. So the authorities strenuously advertise to call 911 and do not stop to assist.
