View Full Version : Holster compatibility?

Hi all,
I have a K9 that I use as one of my daily carry guns. Sometimes I like to pocket carry, and when I do I switch to a Ruger LCR due to the lighter weight.
But I like my K9, and I'd like to pocket carry something similar but lighter. Looking at the Kahr product line it seems that the P9 and CW9 are the polymer versions of the K9; is that correct? If I get a P9 or a CW9 will they work in the collection of K9 holsters I've amassed?

In leather, I'd generally say yes. My CW9 fits well in leather holsters made for a K9 (and vice-versa when I had a K9).
In Kydex it may depend on how tightly molded the holster is to the particular model it's made for.

Greg

I'm interested in the feed back of the K9 holster question. I'm looking for one myself and the 24 oz. weight will help determine the type.

FWIW, I carry my K9 in a Crossbreed Minituck and it works great. Comfortable and concealable!

I've never carried a heavier gun (almost said larger) and hard to imagine. I carry a cm9 and like the size and weight a bunch. Bought the K9 to play with targets with the intention of using it more in the cool months and therefor thinking OWB type holster.

I e-mailed Crossbreed, here is their response:
"The holster made for the K9 will also fit the T, P, TP, and CW series pistols...."
I wrote back asking if this was limited to 9mm or if it applied to all calibers, they replied:
"Pistols of all calibers will fit the same holster. The back is the flexible part allowing the minimal give and retention for the pistol no matter which caliber..."
So as far as my Minituck goes, I could get a CW 380 or a CW 45 and still be good to go!

That's true to a certain extent but a 380 and a CW45 is gonna be stretching that statement.
Generally the 9's and 40's are pretty much dimensionally the same, the 45 is just enough bigger that it sometimes doesn't want to play in the same holsters.
You might be able to get the CW45 in the holster but after wearing that for a while, the 380 is gonna be less than a snug fit.
The beauty of the Crossbreed (it's a great holster) is you can adjust your belt to make up for it some. Weather enough for this scenario I can't say for sure.

As far as Crossbreed goes, they use the same mold for all the different calibers, so it would have enough flex in the leather backing to accommodate them all. You can also make minor adjustments to the kydex with heat (retention, etc).
Of course, that only applies to Crossbreed.

Oh my...Please re read Col B's and Greg's reply they are trying to help you out.
I assure you C.B. does not use the same mold for all calibers.
Have you ever looked at the size difference between a p380 and a CW45????

A couple things...
First, I don't plan on getting either a P380 or a CW45; I really only care about the holster compatibility between the K9, P9 and CW9.
Second, I e-mailed CB directly and they told me it's all the same on their end. You can assure me they don't use the same mold for all calibers if you like, but I'm inclined to believe the people who actually do the molding.

We're just trying to help here. Your golden with your K9, P9 and CW 9, they will interchange all day long.
I also will assure you they don't use the same mold. You must have spoke to the janitor or something. They may use the same mold for all 9's, or all 45's etc but not all across the board.
As you state, it matters not because the 380/45 do not apply to you but it's the truth.

I don't doubt that you believe that, but I e-mailed the company directly and they said it's all the same. I don't know why they would lie about it, they would sell more holsters if they didn't use the same mold :D
Maybe you should e-mail them yourself and see if you get a different result? I'd be interested to hear if you get a different response than I did.

I'll do just that just for grins. Our Admin is very good friends with the owner of Crossbreed. I'm sure he'll get us a definitive answer.
As a general rule most of us here don't talk out of our backsides, we don't express opinions based on here say or opinions but actual use and experience.
I'm not saying you do either, I'm just saying that when folks like Beardog or GB say the sky is falling, you best look for some good cover cause the future will not be bright.
I'll get back to ya soon.

I don't either, and anyone from my "local forum" (Northwest Firearms (http://www.northwestfirearms.com)) will tell you the same thing. But I am happy to quote a response I get from the manufacturer of an item as the truth about that item ;)
In the interest of completeness, here is the complete, unedited (except for my personal info) e-mail exchange:
My original inquiry:
Hi,
I have a Minituck for my Kahr K9; it works very well and is everything I could hope for in an IWB holster. My question involves it's compatibility with other Kahr products, specifically the CW9 and P9. They seem to be the same exterior dimensions as my K9, and leather holsters seem to be interchangeable between the 3. Are they interchangeable with the Minituck? Or more specifically, do you use the same mold for these (and potentially other?) models of Kahr pistols? Are there any other Kahr models that would fit into my holster?

CB's original response:
The holster made for the K9 will also fit the T, P, TP, and CW series pistols! Hope this helps!
My subsequent response:
Perfect, thank you! Is the holster fit universal for all calibers of Kahrs or is it specific to 9mm's?
Their reply from this morning:
Modeler
The way we make our holsters the pistol of all calibers will fit the same holster. The back is the flexible part allowing the minimal give and retention for the pistol no matter which caliber it is chambered in. Hope this helps.
Thank you and have a great day.

I submitted the original question from the form on their website, the text of my submission was included in the reply I received back and is shown above. There was no name attached to the replies I received back from CB and they came from the address info@crossbreedholsters.com

Here's the response I got-
We offer several different categories for the Kahr's.
On the larger holsters we offer
Kahr CW,K,T
Kahr P,TP
On the smaller holsters we offer
Kahr PM,MK,CM
Kahr P380
But it is best to state in the special instruction box what Kahr you have so we can make the best fit possible The way we make our holsters the pistol of all calibers will fit the same holster (Kahr MK 9,40,45)not(Kahr P380 and Kahr PM45). The back is the flexible part allowing the minimal give and retention for the pistol no matter which caliber it is chambered in. You can find out more on our web site www.crossbreedholsters.com or please give us a call at 888-732-5011 and we can help you over the phone. Hope this helps.
Thank you and have a great day
In some respects we're both correct. I underlined the highlights.

Many holsters like my ankle rig are made for the larger gun. I'm sure a P45 would fit perfectly in it. There's plenty of leather left beyond the end of my PM45 barrel.
The one I have for without laser fit my K's and it worked for my PM45, a little snug at first. It also fit a 1911 perfectly.
The one that allows for the laser is a little loose for a K but fits the PM45 or longer model perfectly.
Also too loose for a 1911. Partially due to the laser room but the barrel and slide fit are on the large side also.

As the OP was asking if a P9 or CW9 would fit in a K9 holster:
The CW9 (http://www.kahr.com/Pistols/Kahr-CW9.asp) goes L-5.9" H-4.5" W-.90"
The P9...........L.5.8" H-4.5" W-.90"
The K9.......... L-6.0" H-4.5" W-.90"
I believe slide profile differences would have negligible effect in most instances of holster interchangeability between the models (with the possible exception of very detailed molded thermoplastics).

Greg thanks for the correction. I see the reason why but it's not worth explaining.
