View Full Version : Is the Pm worth the extra money?
Dirty Harry

I would imagine this has been asked a million times. I've never owned a Kahr. I want to replace my pocket Ruger LCP with something that packs a bit more punch. I've been doing some research and the PM/CM seems like what I'm looking for.
Is there a major difference in the quality? Is it worth the extra money? I'm undecided if I;m going to getr a 9mm or 40S&W. I'm leaning tawords the 9mm because it's a little lighter and has 1 more round. I already shoot both calipers so I'm familiar with the characteristics of both.

I have a PM40 and a few things I like are the better exterior slide machining (conceal carry plus), better barrel, slide lock pin and the night sights. I IWB carry and hide it like a dream with absolutely no discomfort.

Have you looked at the CM9? Many are very happy with that, and it's pretty much the same pistol, with a less expensive barrel and sights, cheaper engraving, and only 1 mag, but it's quite a bit less money. If you have the extra $$ the PM is a fine pistol.

What I don't understand is when you look at Kahr's website and look at the parts for each gun, the prices are the same. Unless I'm not looking the parts up correctly, the main things that are supposed to set the PM a part from the CM, the barrel and slide on both are the exact same price. I understand the dirrefences between the two, but if the parts are the same price why is the price of the two pistol different?

I haven't handled either one yet. Going to the gun show tomorrow. I have the extra money, but being the cheap bastard I am I would rather not spend it if I will be happy with the cheaper one. It will be mt EDC for work. It's against company policy to carry so I have to pocket carry to make sure there isn't any accidental flashing of the weapon. I now pocket carry a LCP, but want something in a larger caliber.

My son and I rented a Kahr CM9 and a CW40 (they didn't have a CM40 for rent),
I can say for sure now that I don't want a CM40/CW40. The CM9 is much nicer to shoot than the CM/CW40. I'm not say its bad just that in my mind the CM9 was easier to shoot and shoot accurately. I didn't find the CW40 unbearable, but it was not fun like the CM9.
I also do not want to have to stock another caliber.

I can understand that. I have a lot of handguns. The only 2 calibers I shoot are 9mm & 40S&W. The 40 is mainly in USPSA matches. Most of my guns are 9mm. I do have a Glock 26 & a Glock 27 so I've been down that road. The 27 hasn't seen day light in some time. The only 40s I shoot on a regular bassis are my 2 Glock 35s. The size and weight of the 35s keep the recoil down.

The CM9 will do everything the PM9 will do all day long 7 days a week.
The PM9 is to some more asthetic, some prefer black (I don't). A pinned front sight instead of dovetailed but sights are available.
You can shoot lead thru the CM, PM also but not recommended with the polygonal barrel.
I think you'd be happy with either. If you can find a steal deal on a PM, go for it, if you find a CM go for that. Neither will be a disappointment and many actually prefer the look of the CM too.

I don't care for the stainless slide. If I do get a CM (which I probably will because I'm cheap) I will either duracoat the slide myself or send it off and have someone else do it. I like my handguns to me all black.

I lean towards 45acp or 9mm. I do have some .40s, but have not warmed up to it much so far. Maybe some day I'll change my mind on that...
There are some small differences between the P(M) and C(M/W) series. The differences are pretty well documented on this forum and on the 'net in general.
If you like the P series better than the C series, then get it. If you are ok with the C series differences, that works, too. To me its kind of like comparing a GMC pickup with a Chevy pickup.
A year from now the difference in price won't mean so much. Short term the price difference means getting in to the C series leaves enough for a couple mags, and maybe a mid-priced holster and a little ammo for what you would pay for a P series.
I ended up getting in to the C series and not regretted it. I have the LCP and it hardly get used except for the most extreme deep carry times since the CM9 does nearly everything I want when I need small.
Good luck.

I think unless you are really really looking at the P series and just in love w/ the extra fit and finish, I'd go w/ the C series. They didn't have the C series when I got my PM9 and P9, and then there was no C equivalent to my TP9. I mean, yea, it looks nicer, but you can put the $ different into mags and you'll be much happier.
Just not worth it IMO unless you are really jones'in for the P in the first place for whatever reason.
Now, the DLC black slide is a totally different story. Definitely worth the extra $ if you ask me. Looks better, arguable more durable, looks better. Did I mention it looks better in DLC?

What's the fun in that. I have handguns in eight different calibers. Wouldn't have it any other way :D. Oh and I love my CW40:D:D!
Looks like you've thought this out pretty good. Go for the best deal. I'm betting you will be happy with either.

The exterior slide machining is different. The PM is smoothed out, better engraving. The CM is certainly a fine pistol but there are differences. Depends on the $$$ you want to spend.

Here's my real list of differences between the two, it's not just looks. Both serve well though...
PM9 = Polygonal rifling
CM9 = Conventional rifling
PM9 = Machined slide release
CM9 = Injection molded slide release
PM9 = Dovetail front sight
CM9 = Pinned front sight
PM9 = Refined slide exterior
CM9 = Regular slide exterior
PM9 = All black option
CM9 = No all black option (factory)
PM9 = Night sights option
CM9 = No night sights option (factory)
PM9 = 2 magazines
CM9 = 1 magazine
PM9 = Laser Engraving
CM9 = Stamped Engraving

Also, the second mag that comes with the PM is that absurd thing with the plastic on the end. I never wanted that mag, this is a pocket gun. So the money you save on the CM allows you to buy an extra mag, add night sights, and still go to Mickey D's with the change.
Truth be told, I don't buy a Glock or a Kahr for the looks. Engraved Browning Hi Power, yes. CM40 is a pocket gun, no one will ever see it unless they are looking at the wrong end.

If you consider the reason for this weapon, protection at close quarters, is it worth the extra $'s. Not good at target practicing, not good for showing off since it's CC. I would prefer the PM but do I need it?......welllllllll. CM9 and lovin it.
As the man says........."Just sayin".
PM9 = Polygonal rifling
CM9 = Conventional rifling
(if firing close range, as in most cases, does it make a difference.)
PM9 = Machined slide release
CM9 = Injection molded slide release
(pretty but not necessary)
PM9 = Dovetail front sight
CM9 = Pinned front sight
(close quarters not needed)
PM9 = Refined slide exterior
CM9 = Regular slide exterior
(Pretty but not needed)
PM9 = All black option
CM9 = No all black option (factory)
(Not needed)
PM9 = Night sights option
CM9 = No night sights option (factory)
(Not needed)
PM9 = 2 magazines
CM9 = 1 magazine
(?? ok)
PM9 = Laser Engraving
CM9 = Stamped Engraving
(pretty but not needed)

I sold my PM9 and bought a CM9. Been very happy with the results. Of course my PM9 was the older version that was a little shorter. I couldn't get it to shoot consistently.

Thanks for all the help guys!!
I will be heading to the gun show in about an hour. I will report back with what I end up with.
There will hopefully be some deals. It seems guns have come back down but ammo at the shows is still up there.
If there aren't any good deals I will be getting one off of gunbroker.

These are good points to consider (especially Mickey D's :-). I know with my PM I am pretty particular when it comes to cleaning, oiling, preventative stuff, etc... but it IS a defensive, concealable weapon that remains hidden. I know the exterior slide being smoother is a plus for me personally and I would prefer two flush magazines. Kahrs in general are great for their designed purpose namely a defensive carry weapon and while I have a Glock 30S for a home nightstand and periodic carry weapon, my Kahr is with me most of the time.

DH,
You won't be sorry I'm sure. I intend to keep mine A LONG TIME and not because I have to but rather because it fills my needs for CC. Incidentally I paid $499 for mine. You got a good fair deal.
cm9 and lovin it.

I think I will like it. I'm carrying it in my pocket now while I'm at home to break in the pocket holster. I will be ordering sights for it and taking it to the range next week to put a few hundred rounds through it to make sure it's worthy of being carried. Until then the LCP will be in my pocket.
The prices were all over the place. The highest I was quoted was $465 out the door. I told that guy I can get it a few tables over for $399 out the door. He said I can't touch that. That's a great deal. You should go buy that one.
The gun show at the Palm Beach County fair grounds is the biggest gun show in the state. There is one every month. There is always a lot of vendors so that helps drive down the prices.
The ammo was still too high for me. Luckily I work about 1 mile from Walmart. I go there every day on my lunch break. Some times I get lucky and score some ammo.

Congrats - seems you did good on the price. When you get a chance, go through the proper prep and lube stickies in the kahr-tech sub forum. Lots of good related reading in there.

DH,
As I've said before I've got several holsters and lately I've been carrying in a Remora pocket holster in the rear pocket. Honestly I forget it there. It's not a quick draw like a OWB or IWB but not that bad either and it's a hell of lot more comfortable. Congrats and welcome to the forum.

What holster did you get? I am reading about the Desantis Nemesis but honestly never pocket carried. Thoughts?

I second the Remora for IWB carry, works great. It's all I carry in these days, even my heavier CZ. I had a desantis nemesis for my PM9, always felt that gun was just a tad on the heavy side for pocket carry. Really need to be in the category of a pocket 380 or a super light revolver to pocket carry IMO. But PLENTY of people do carry their PM series (9 or 40) as a pocket gun.

Desantis Nemesis is the one I use and I very surprised I like it especially in my back pocket but like a wallet (which I don't carry) I don't notice it all. The way I feel now is this may very well be my main way to carry. That little holster WILL not pull out of my back pocket and although the cm9 is just below the edge of my jean pocket I have no problem pulling the gun out. Takes longer than a fast draw but comfort is worth something. They are selling a "Super" sticky holster and it's around $33. The Nemesis is less than that and I see no reason to update as I'm happy with it.

I like to carry in my front pocket. The best thing about that is if something looks fishy you can have your hand in your pocket with the gun in your hand and you still look normal like nothing is going on.

I carry my LCP in a Desantis Nemesis. There was a guy at the gun show selling similar holsters for $19. I bought one from him.
