View Full Version : Rattler vs 9mm

As I was mowing yesterday, I came upon a bigger than average rattler, for this area anyway. He was about to get away by going under an old mobile home. I had my 9mm with me, fired 3 shots, hitting him with all 3. He measured 42 inches long and 14 rattles and a button. We live in the country and over the years rattlers have bit my horse, several cows, dogs and my Dad spent 3 days in the hospital and was very sick because of a bite.
Have any of you used any of the shot shells they make for various calibers? Are they strong enough to cycle the semi autos? I'd like to get some for my wife's Kahr CW9.
Thanks,
Rod

I would probably just suggest a cheap 38 special with shot shells. Keep it in the garage. Cheapo charter arms or something similar.

One of those Judges loaded with birdshot would make a helluva snake gun.

I hate snakes!
I think GB has some success with shot loads in his CW45? Dang, can't remember for sure.
Generally they don't have enough to cycle auto's. They don't feed well.
They work splendid in a snubby revolver as suggested. The Judge or Governor would be a great snake gun.

Autos are not reliable to cycle birdshot loads. Some will but most won't. It is better to use a revolver for 100% reliability. They are great snake killers when used within 6 foot range.

Yep, CCI .45ACP shot shells feed, fire, and cycle reliably in my CW45.:)
They do the same in my XD-S and Remington 1911 R1S:D

So, does anyone know where I could buy a box or two of CCI 38/357 shotshells? I haven't found any in stock anywhere.

I'll check at home. I used to have a couple boxes. If I got any I'll send em to ya. We don't got no poison snakes around here at home. Had these for east the mountains.
Gotta be old but I reckon they still would work just fine.

That is correct sir, just load'em and go.:80:
Awhile back, I posted a couple of videos of shooting them in the CW45, XD-S, and 1911; those videos are here if anyone is interested:

This gent does a much better job with his review of them:

Great shooting. Shot shells work best in revolvers as a rule.
With marksmanship like that do you need shot shells? Ricochet?

I use a Bond Arms derringer which chambers .45 long Colt and 3 inch .410. With number 8 or smaller shot; they sluice the heck out wooly bugger snakes here in the south.
The most aggressive are the water moccasins, next are the copperheads and the least aggressive are the rattlers. Because I love my Dobie female; I kill them all on sight.

Thank you for the kind words, kwh. I was looking for them more for the wife.

I don't think pistol caliber shot shells would work worth a damn on a wife. Probably just piss her off badly. I'd stick with conventional ammo. Sure you gotta be a little more careful with your aim but it just works better.:D

I used to have a female Dobie named Nikki.
Best damn dog I ever had.
Ultra smart.
A trusted and cherished member of the family.
When she died my daughters cried.

Heck, when my Dobie dies, I'm gonna cry. And I was once upon time, a hard guy.

I cry everytime I watch Ol Yeller and I probably seen it 30 times..........
I don't think I ever was a hard man, well harder than I am now but even then maybe not very hard.
I used to say I was small but wiry, maybe that was just a cover.

My K9 is from '97/98 and I tried some CCI shotshells in it with some problems. I don't really recall if they cycled, but I couldn't eject an unfired one... too long, so Testing is advised, as with any SD ammo and SD weapons.
