I thought I would start a thread that is likely to go on, possibly a sticky if popular, that would share links for current best prices on quality ammo.
Rather than look for the absolute lowest price, I look for brass cases that can be reloaded and plain nose target ammo rather than defensive rounds at twice the price.
It can be new or remanufactured, but I would clearly note whichever it might be. It can be domestic or imported, but country of origin seems to be included in the listings, if some prejudice is really relevant. I think we know that the best price is on imported stuff.
The two bellweather calibers are 9mm and .45 ACP. Revolver numbers are not relevant in a Kahr forum. The .40 S&W seems to fall proportionally in between, not pressured quite as much as the other two on popularity and frequent out-of-stocks.
I will prime the pump here by offering Cabela's as apparently getting new stock and having .45 ACP at $19 and 9mm at $10. MFS new manufacture (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_215727&id=0073215217158a).
Before discovering the Cabela's stash, I ordered 1000 rounds of remanufactured .45 ACP at average $20/box equivalent. The going rate for single box new cartridges seems to be $26-27 plus tax and shipping, about the same in stores, I believe.
There seems to be a lot of PMC ammo around lately and generally at a favorable price. I bought a case locally of .45 ACP for $400 plus tax, no shipping. The store knocked $2/box off for taking all 20 boxes.
I use new .45 ACP ammo in my Kimbers and remanufactured in my Spingfield, which doesn't care and keeps on going flawlessly. In .40, I use reloads with truncated cone bullets. I have yet to hit a dud round. The last batch was Armscor with mixed brass and nickel cases.
One definitely has to buy in bulk to get any savings. Discounts seem to be 10-15% for 1000 rounds. Reloads or "remanufactured" ammo is about 15-20% savings.
What sells out first is the most ecomonical with the lowest minimum quantity. To get a good price, one really has to have about $425 ready to go waiting to find the right deal.
Prices are still inching up from what I have observed. The best deals on something brand name and domestic (I think) have been Federal red box American Eagle on luckygunner.com. That is $25/ 50 rounds and $2/box off for 5 boxes ($115 package).
All this is as of 7:30 AM EDT, Monday, May 3.
