While I just purchased a K9 I have to ask. I have read that one should replace the recoil spring around every 1200 to 1300 rounds. Why? is this really necessary? Also why is there no fix for the losing of rounds from a spare mag?

Been a loyal Glock and 1911 user for a long time. I relly like the feel of the K9 in my hand. Just purchased it used for $450 and put 50 rounds down range. Sights are on and points naturally. So far like it but as I said only 50 rounds by me.

Would appreciate any info or tips. I did come across a vid of an individual that has an easier way of field stripping the K9. While I forget his name it seemed to work well. It was a You Tube vid. However he seemed a little strange. I will be field stripping a lot as I clean my weapon after every trip to the range which is no more than a two week time frame. usually weekly.

Obviously the recoil spring will last much longer than the 1500 round count. However, the small size, lightweight nature of Kahrs, means the spring, which is pretty heavy already does a lot of work. if you carry the K9, it is recommended you keep it in peak condition by using fresh recoil springs.

I've heard of some folks that keep a dedicated spring for carry and use other springs for practice. IMHO, they are cheap enough not to be a major concern.

Takedown will get easier the more you do it. I've gotten to the point I can hold the slide in position and use a mag base to push out the slide stop pin. Practice makes perfect.

Some pouches allow you to carry mags without losing rounds. other folks will steer you in the right direction there.

welcome! Check out Greg's sticky thread from the new member area = slingshot modification. It also helps hold in the top round. And pretty easy to do.

I replaced the recoil springs in each used Kahr I purchased just because. They are cheap enough and it cannot hurt. It really made a big difference for the K40. I think that one was just plumb worn out. I wonder how many rounds it took to do it. I have about 1500 rounds with the new spring and the gun still feels good. It's easier to tell with a 40sw but the felt recoil starts getting harsher as the spring wears out. Otherwise just do it as you see fit.

I read all the new member stickies thoroughly and recommend any new buyer or used buyer do the same. Again, it cannot hurt and it many times REALLY helps. I prep mine like they are new even though they are 10 and 15 years old. The reward is that they perform perfectly. You'd never know they are that old by shooting them or looking at them.

Thanks!

I go by what my gunsmith taught me. He says watch the casings. When they start ejecting farther than normal, say > 6 ft. it's time to replace. I have used that for all my handguns, regardless of make or caliber and it has served me well. For the weapons I CC including a K9, I keep a new spring on deck. I have also found that even if you buy the same spring (same mfg. same strength) each and every one will have a different life. Not saying this is the way to go, but it works for me.

Go here order several recoil springs and no more shipping charges for some time.

Info experience. Just ordered a k9 Recoil Spring and asked about $3.99 shipping charges and if they still had the free shipping available. She said they have never offered it. My call was the second they've had this morning. Not a problem with me as I wanted to order anyway.

I think hardluk1 meant that -- buy a bunch now, pay your shipping once, then you won't need to order more or pay more shipping later. Makes sense.

I think the reference was to buying a three pack and saving money on future orders and paying shipping on each. I buy some of their stuff in 10 packs... always buy a bunch of stuff at one time. Have large shoebox full of new stuff from them... stuff I no longer need... like 10 packs of XD45 magazine springs and the like.

I don't really have a problem field stripping my K9, but new K9's come with a plastic take down block which inserts into the barrel and then holds the slide in the exact position needed to take out the slide lock lever. It can be bought from Kahr at the link below for $5:

I used a Sharpie pen to hold the slide in place and one day when I was odering stuff from Kahr, I threw one of those plastic blocks into the order. I think a got a few caps and mugs, though the mugs weren't dishwasher safe.

wolffs never paid shipping that I know of.

K9 recoil springs are not expensive, 1500 rounds is also alot of range time to. so why not change them more often. Most issues in guns start with the recoil springs. If one thinks 1500 round sis not alot of shooting then that tells me this person is a "shooter" to and knows first hand that having fresh springs in his firearm is a good thing. but in quanties from wolffs it is cheaper all around, buy some of their mag springs while ur at it and that 5# striker spring is just one heh of a nice drop in mod to..
