Some people just push things a little too far. (http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2013/09/i_cant_throw_him_out_grand_rap.html#incart_hbx#inc art_best-of)

Just because you can do something does not mean it is a good idea.

+1 Agree. The man could just as easily carried concealed. No one would have known and no one would have been ill at ease. That's known as a common courtesy.

He did it for a reason to ask then to repeal an unused ordinance, He may be a man of principal, but he is looking for a lot of unwanted attention. IMO

Except that going concealed does nothing to expose the issue he is attempting to expose and change. (Funny how the mayor knows of the issue and knows that the man is correct but wont do anything to fix the issue.) In fact he tried that and it didn't work and now here we are with the Mayor not bothering to do anything to fix it. Perhaps if he goes about with his gun on his side legally more people will take notice and contact their representatives and something will be done about the issue. Of course they could just run on as they are and pay the law suits which will result and then the tax payers can complain that something should have been done to prevent them.

The meeting was in a school and in Michigan you can't legally carry concealed in a school. You can, however, open carry in a school. Go figure. I think this is the same guy who showed up to vote with the school in session open carrying just because he could. As a result, all across the state polling places are no longer in schools. I agree the guy is passionate and within his "rights" but he does nothing but antagonize the gun haters which in turn makes the gun haters refer to RKBA people like all of us as "gun loving nuts." He does us no favors. The reason the mayor can't do anything is because state law allows him to be there. It's out of the mayor's hands.

The City Council can't change a federal law. The gun free zone act of 1995 prohibits carrying a firearm on school property.

Unless the federal law has been repealed the State of Michigan can't change the law. As long as the feds control interstate commerce and contribute to school funding it is my understanding that it is under federal jurisdiction. I could be wrong, but that would be a first. :)

I don't have the time right at the moment to look up the reference but my understanding is you can open carry in a school in Michigan ONLY IF you have a concealed pistol license however, the same CPL holder can't carry concealed in a school.

Compare and contrast...
a liberal grassroots organizing group working with a Hispanic advocacy group and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), sent an email this week asking for at least 200 people to to volunteer to get arrested at an immigration rally in Washington, D.C. in acts of civil disobedience.

Guess which group will come closer to getting its way - the gun protesters or the immigration protesters?

Muggs,
Here's the best, most authoritative answer I can find (http://miopencarry.org/sites/default/files/MSP_Legal_Update_No._86_2_336854_7.pdf).
Essentially, you can open carry in a school because there's no law that says you can't. But you must have a CPL. Carrying concealed in a school is prohibited even if you have a CPL under separate CCW laws.
The guy in question often shows up in schools open carrying because he has a CPL and because he can. It's a stunt and does none of us any good.
