View Full Version : I have to have my CW9 frame cut to take the compensated barrel

Picked up a Kahr comped barrel and I find out that the frame of my pistol needs to be sent to Kahr to be cut so that the new barrel will fit. If I get it cut the original barrel won't fit anymore.
When did they change the width of the lug part of the barrel on the CW9?
Also, I have a CW40 and the frame on it is already "wider" than my CW9 in the lug area. I was wondering if I could swap the CW9 slide and barrel over to the 40 frame so I can try the comped 9 barrel and see if it's even worth the effort?
Kahr said they'd take the barrel back if I didn't want it...

I joined this site in 2010 and the first Kahr I bought was a PM9. I don't remember how long AFTER that date I picked up my CW9 which was also purchased new.

Hell, disregard-the lug in my CW40 is the same width as the barrel in the CW9 so it won't fit anyway. When the hell did they change this?????
Seems kinda weird that it was wide enough for a 40 but they had to widen it for a 9???
That leaves LESS polymer frame to hold all this crap.....
They wanted to charge me 190 bucks to "modify" my pistol that I believe would include a new slide as well as machining the frame. I said hell no and they said that they WOULD cut my frame for 65 bucks and I could use all of my original stuff EXCEPT that I wouldn't be able to use the original barrel...

very interesting on that cw9 barrel change. never knew that. If ur cw9 slide will evenslide on ur cw40 frame would be a good place to start. I was also under theimpression the 40 frames were larger than the 9. U shouldknow realfast if it is gonna slide on that frame. Would also liketo hear back on that to. :Amflag2:

I'm shooting tomorrow and when I get back and start cleaning guns, I'll check the slide crossfit. Like I said, it won't matter with my setup because the 40 barrel lug (to include the BRAND NEW comped barrel) is the same width as the original 9mm barrel installed in my CW9 and they are narrower than the new comped barrel.
Again, I can't for the life of me understand why they'd change the barrel of the 9mm and leave the 40 SW the same as the original????
Sorry, seems kinda stupid to me.

copterdrvr,
Would you be so kind as to post some photos of your barrels for comparison?
FWIW, I've being running a PM40 top end on my CM9 lower and have not had any problems with it, so my guess would be that the 9mm and .40 poly frames are the same size.

Greg

You might consider getting your barrel and slide Mag-na-ported. It cost the shipping to them +$145 + return shipping. My P40 was already done, and the reason I bought it on our Market Place, and I like it. I put the ported Kahr barrel on my P9 and that's what I carry a lot now. The P9 and CW9 are supposed to use the same ported barrel.

Here's my post on those barrels:

Firing tests with flashes here:

My P40 "blog" here:
http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?t=8426&highlight=Mag-na-ported+P40
The Kahr ported barrel throws the blast forward and up and is not as effective as the Mag-na-porting, which throws the blast upwards. The Kahr ported barrel's flash is hardly noticeable, but I've seen figures saying the Kahr barrel's recoil/muzzle rise is about 70% of the Mag-na-porting.

I have a cw9 with a EA05*** number and year old TP40 with a FP05***. Kahr does have the slide widths right in the advertiseing with the cw9 being .90 wide and the 40 being .94 .
The barrels chamber cw9 is .572 wide and the 40 is .680
Inside the slides rails of the cw9 is .6958, the tp40 is .697 The frames rear lug area is are close enough, width in a 1th's that the cw9 slid will fit on the 40 frame but don't know about function .

This should clarify everything...
My current CW9 has the same .250 dimension as the CW40.
The NEW CW9 barrel has a much wider lug.
What kills me is that I just recently ordered and installed a NEW CW40 comped barrel and it was the .250 dimension.
If it's good enough for a damned 40 Smith it oughta be good enough for a 9mm....
Comped barrel buyers BEWARE!

nice photo. very interesting, gonna besomereal screws up with people ordering that barrel. I wonder whenor if the new cw frames are not cut out to accept this new comp barrel also along with the standard barrel. I wonder why the need to beef that lug area up to. very interesting "watson"

If you send this pic to Kahr, and they tell you that the new barrel you have is supposed to be made that way, and not a mistake. I would have that thing in the mail real fast back to them for a full refund.
I don't know why they would expect people to alter their frame to fit a barrel...seems back-asswards to me???

The pistols are made with this configuration now-apparently. I don't know if all of them are or which models specifically but certainly the CW9 is. It does make the feed ramp wider although I've never had a single failure to feed in my CW9.

Or a ported MK9 barrel. Did they just send the wrong one?

Interesting... Kahr has added a warning on their site that this barrel will not fit "older" CW9s without modification:
http://www.kahr.com/Guide-Rods-and-Barrels/Kahr-40-Ported-Barrel-P9-and-CW9.asp
Has anyone seen a CW9 with the wider lug? I bought mine less than a year ago, but never really checked the manufacture date. It has the narrow lug. Shame really, I was considering picking up one of the ported barrels to play around with, but I wouldn't want to modify the frame. Guess that plan is out!

Yeah, that wasn't there when I ordered it. I'm sending it back on Monday-no cutting my CW9....

WOW at a 190 bucks plus s&h one way just to cut your frame ,add the cost to get your pistol there it would be cheaper to sell your older cw9 , buy a new model and drop the barrel in!!

SURE WOULD HAVE BEen nice had they put a serial # to the P9 and Cw9 as to when this change was made, would avoid a call for sure. I wonder why they even did this, had to be a reason . I am sure kahr will not tell u why either.
