I followed the prep instructions on this forum for the mags as well as the CM40 before firing it. However, I'm wondering how much oil should be on the inside of the mag body and on the sides, front, and back of the follower. I realize mixing oil and primers doesn't produce good results, so I may have the mag body and follower on the dry side. Can you offer me any guidance on how much oil to use and where for magazines?

When I prepped the mags, I tried to make sure the springs went back in the way they came out. However, I am wondering whether it makes a difference with these springs which end goes in first and how to tell one end from the other.

I clean the gunk out of the tube with paper towels then just lightly lube the spring with a bit of oil on my fingers... not dripping, either.

I also use fine grit sandpaper to go over all the edges of the follower, the feed lips and the retention notch, to get rid of any burrs AND with great care not to round the retention notch and lessen retention!

IMO the best lube for trhat area and on the mag spring is remington dri lube. no running. really no lube is even needed.

I concur with the "master of disaster", Lord Jocko. You do not need or want to lube the magazine. Doing so is asking for problems. Check your owners manual for the proper installation of the mag springs. (Rule #1 when all else fails check the owners manual.)

That's pretty much what I did. I cleaned everything off with a paper towel, then ran a slightly oiled napkin through the mag body and very lightly oiled the spring with a q-tip.

I don't recall whether I did that, although I did polish up the edges of the open end of the magazine with ultra fine emery cloth.

Yep, that's always good advice. I've read the manual through a couple of times and parts of it more than that. Given my level of retention these days, maybe I need to read it again. :) I just thought I would solicit opinions and insights on this forum. I find a lot here that's well beyond what the manual covers. I may try a little dry lube to see if that seems to make any difference in how readily the follower slides. I try to minimize oil in guns since our temps reach -40F.

Must be some great ice fishing when it gets into that -40 stuff. Not for me, too gosh darn cold.

In that kind of temperature I'd use very little oil anywhere on the gun, keeping it close to your body under 13 layers of long handles and muk luks, it will stay warm but run it pretty dry.

Long as you wipe it all out oil or no oil don't really matter inside the mag. Modern ammo the primers are pretty well sealed. I don't flirt with disaster with lots of oil but I don't lose sleep over wiping it down inside either.

Fish have to be pretty lethargic at -40, course the water under the ice fishing shack is probably much warmer than the air around the ice fishing shack.

I think I'll watch Grumpy Old Men tonight and think of you. Stay warm my friend.

Thanks, Bawanna. I find the cold gets to me a little more now than when I was young and had better circulation, but the weather here in MN seems mild compared to what we had when we lived in the Yukon. Saw it down to -65F there. Eating cayenne and Tabasco helps. Still, hauling hay to livestock in the winter here can be hard on the face and hands, especially with a breeze out.

Fish have it not too bad here, being cold blooded creatures. As long as the water is unfrozen, it's above about 32F. So, your ice fisherman may be sitting in temps 70 degrees or so lower than what the fish are experiencing, not counting wind chill, which the fish don't get either - unless they get caught. Of course, the fisherman will have on insulation but the fish not. I'll have to say that fish caught here in the winter taste far, far better than anything I ever caught when I lived in Georgia. They hardly have any body smell at all when you pull them from winter water. Fantastic eating when cooked just after being caught.

well u know what u can do with -65F. can'tprintit but I betu getthe point. Many years ago 5of us huntedup on Madeline Island in Lake Superior during the first part of bow season. We didnb't do any good, so the later part I think was around Dec,, so we thouth what the hell lets go. We live in Indiana were 32F is cold, We loade dup and drove up to there, Wow, 3 feet of snow, colder than a witches tit, WE LASTED 3 DAYS andgot the hell out of dodge. 3of my buddies didn't speak to me for a few months after that either. Just sayin

I bet survery will show that a hell of alot of babies are made during ur winter months. Just sayin. I would maybe think that after sitting in ones home for a couple ofmonths through ur winters, that maybe even Pegosie or Hillary would start to look good.

Oh my I can't believe I said that, forgive me father for I am all fokked up.
