greetings to all from a new member ,just got a second hand pm9 and am trying to get used to the trigger after many years of nothing but glocks. now for the inevitable stupid question,i got a new recoil assy.from kahr and the slide stop now is non functional except for when i shoot. i put the new and old assy. side by side and the new springs base is almost twice the size.do i need too grind the new spring base to get the slide stop to work. thanks for any help .

First of all welcome to the sight.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you saying that the slide stop lever only works when you have no mag, an empty mag or loaded magazine?

With the absence of a magazine you will have to manually push the slide lever up to get the slide to lock back. With an empty magazine it will be very hard to drop/engage the slide. However with a loaded magazine the slide should go into battery fairly easily using the slide lever. Hope this helps.

referring to that round washer type thing on the recoil assembly that goes agaisnt the barrel lug. If you are, what you have is the new kahr recoil assembly and that will work perfectly in your gun. The one u replaced has the smaller base on the recoil assembly measures 3/8" the new one has the 1/2" size. There is no more 3/8" made. that is not ur issue at all.

If the slide stop is working when u shoot and not when u shoot, are u like some one ask racking the slide with a empty magazine in it. That is the only way that slide will lock open. It has to have a magazine in it.

if i try to engage the slide lock by racking the slide ,the slide will not go far enough for me to engage the slide lock. i thought at first i was too much of a **** to rack the slide but i took a chunk out of my computer table and kitchen table trying to push the slide back and it seems to be binding. i then went and shot it and the slide will lock back on an empty mag but i still cant do it manually

old recoil system in it and try it to see if maybe something else is causing it. that is indeed strange..Make sure the outter spirng is on correctly, open end towards the front of the slide. although i seriously doubt if that is the issue. If it works with the old recoil system on, then IMO just take that new outter recoil spring and put it on the used recoil assembly you have and be done with it.. My original PM9 had the smaller recoil tab and when I ordered a few replacement, the 1/2" size was shipped and it gave me no issues. there is no different barrel that accepts one or the other, so I am sure kahr wil tell you either one will work perfect. Why they made that change to the bigger washer on the back is something that I can't say, as I was never told why.

If the guide rod flange is actually getting in the way, and the recoil is enough to overcome that (by moving the flange?), then there should be some significant wear on it, right? Can we see a picture of the two rods side by side (woah...don't take that out of context!)

But yeah, new spring on old guide rod sounds like a winner.

I'm surprised ole crystal ballo allowed you to even say that.

the old guide rod has lost its tip at some point in its life and the spring tension of the old and new springs is not a lot better than what i had. i have inspected the guide rod frame and barrel none look to be hitting anything but i will keep shooting and looking.as much as i would love to take pictures this caveman has does not have the knowledge. at least for now the gun has been perfect through 300 rounds even with the new rod thanks for taking time for the new guy

If it works ok when your shooting and locks back on an empty mag I'm thinking your perhaps just not pulling the slide back with enough enthusiasm to get to the slide lock point? If the guns running the new guide assembly has to be lined up and doing what it's suppose to do. Is the slide hanging up even without a magazine? You can't pull the slide all the way back without hanging up with no mag in the way? We gotta figure out what's going on with this thing.

JMstollard, I was referring to your side by side rod comparison crystal ball censorship. PC questionable but I liked it.

yes it locks back when shooting but trust me i now have a nice chunk out of both my computer table and dining table i too thought i was too much of a wuss and pushed the edge of the slide against both with no joy. so far so good and hopefully as the spring and gun get to know each other hopefully this prob. will resolve on its own if not i can always get another spring

How are you chambering the first round? Empty gun slide in battery. Insert mag, pull slide all the way back and release? Insert mag pull back to slide lock and release slide lock lever (like the book says) or what combination of the above. At some point that slide has to go back far enough to pick up a round out of the magazine. That is the same point where the slide lock lever is pushed up either with the thumb or with an empty magazine. If it's shooting and cycling that slide is doing full travel. I'm just not seeing this.

just like all my glocks put in mag grab slide yank back release ,and so far it is working at the range i am able to do it like the book says. it is only stopping about 1/16 of an inch from making it to slidelock when i pull back it looks like the slide stops about even with the rim but if you push the round just a little forward it works.

Another 'new-guy' question. Can the group (or moderators) summarize why some series Kahrs appear to be experiencing higher than expected malfunctions? Trying to wade through a lot of input, some possible causes seem to possibly be a combination of:
A- New product growing pains (Are they serial number/model specific or fixed?)
B- Lack of preliminary cleaning/insufficient cleaning (What is 'right'?)
C- Ammo quality (Names to avoid?)
D- Component upgrades done after delivery of some models/S.N.s?
E- Will I see a big difference in accuracy with the shorter sight radius of the PM9?
Thanks to all for your input!

I think we hear far more about malfunctioning guns here than about the ones that function fine. Your probably partially correct with growing pains and new models and I think pushing the small size for caliber envelope might be a factor. The bad things we hear about are usually actually minor and quick easy fixes, not all but alot. I was very very skeptical prior to buying my PM45 for all the reasons you stated and I just didn't want to deal with a lemon. I had no issues, I love it and have not regret. Others have had to send em back once and sometimes even twice but seems once they are dialed in all is good. Preparation following the proper prepping of your new Kahr under the tech section seems to help things go better.
Like any new gun I think it's just a matter of finding what yours like best although I don't believe kahrs are ammo sensitive.
As for the PM9 I think you'll be absolutely amazed at how accurate that little gun can be. That seems to be the one constant and never changeing thing in all the reports around here. Amazing accuracy.
I think a few bad ones get out, a few get knocked out by owners who don't read the book or assemble things wrong, Kahr seems to fix em all up just fine eventually. I think mostly they run like they should and those we don't hear enough about.

TD,

Check out this post http://kahrtalk.com/pm-series-pistols/2170-pm45-recoil-spring-assembly.html and see if this could be the same type of problem with your new recoil assembly.

sorry for the delay in getting back to this problem, the coil count on the spring was right the only diffrence was the cap on the end of the new guide rod.i countacted IAN at kahr and he was as stumped as i but when i put in the old outer spring everything was fine and thought that was the solution, IAN told me he would send out a new spring and i recieved it friday. unfortunately the new springs do the same thing as this is an older gun could be something in the design,i think this was made around 2002 and will probably have to go back to let kahr see what the problem is . once again thanks all for all the great advice and help tom.

I went through this same thing with my old style PM40. I had to reinstall my old recoil spring assembly to get everything working again. What helped my situation was new mag springs and followers. I have $100 worth of new parts I need to return.

Since the gun is very particular about what ammo I shoot in it, I plan to send it in for a once over. My own ramp polishing is not doing any good. My P40 is perfect and will serve in the interim as my fanny pack gun.
