I've just picked up a used K40, my first Kahr, and found that it drops the magazine when I fire it. It's not my grip. Is this a known problem? I'm going to order a new magazine spring but before I do I thought I'd post here to see if the K40 has a known problem.

You might want to order a new mag release and mag release spring. I doubt that the magazine spring is causing your problem.

Thanks, muggsy. Are you thinking that the mag release may be worn? I haven't removed it yet but my impression is that it's made of steel. Have you heard of other similar complaints?

When you insert the mag & it snaps in is the side of the catch with the flathead screw flush with the frame? Can you pull the mag out by hand without pressing the release button. IMO you have a simple fix like muggsy said with most likely catch & new spring.

check out what kerby9mm ask. If u can'tpull it out after insertion, thenit IMOhas tobe shooter error causing it. I neverheard of any of the K series giving this issue. I seriously doubt if the mag release button is worn. It could by chance have a badspring in that button that is not stiff enough.U gotta rememberthis is a used gun and qite possably someone tampered with the mag release vbutton assembly

shoot it left handed to see if u can du[pl;icate that issue.

Well, I finally got time to look things over and it appears that someone has taken the mag release apart. They managed to bugger up the screw head of the mag release lock in the process so my guess is that they shortened the mag release spring. I'll be ordering some new parts and think that will solve the problem. I thought the mag release button pushed in awfully easy the first time I tried it.

Well one of my collection of horse heads sent by you fell off the wall the other day and hit me right in the nose, maybe we could call it even, although I know your never satisfied with even, always want to be one up which I respect you for.

If I didn't give you a hard time everyday who would, I guess the Muggsy or Tinman or perhaps 150 other guys. I guess I can lay off for awhile. It won't feel right but I'll do it.

I think you'll miss me too.

Wanna start seeing other people?

Finally recetived the replacement mag release from Kahr. When comparing the new parts with the replacement parts, I found someone had "polished" the original mag release a bit too much. That's why it was dropping the mag when firing.

I installed the new latch, which required fitting, and will range test it tomorrow.

Awesome! Hope it goes well.
The previous owner may have ground it down because it was hitting the follower. I know the follower on my CW9 just rubs the mag catch as it moves past. I need to take off just a hair off the mag catch, but there is a fine line between eliminating an issue and creating a new one. I've never had an issue with it though, so it is low priority.

In this case, the front of the magazine was rubbing on the catch. I used the rub marks on the catch to relieve it a little while being careful to avoid reducing the part of the catch that goes into the mag cutout. There were a few burrs on the parts that had to be removed to get everything to function. We'll see;)

Got to the range today. K40 functions just fine. Now that I can fire it without the mag dropping I found out that I have to adjust my grip. The slide lock recoils right into my thumb. I typically shoot with 2 thumbs forward but with the Kahr I have to drop my strong hand thumb.

Otherwise, it's a very accurate pistol. Probably as accurate as any I've owned. If I do my part it keeps them all in about 2" at 21 feet.
