I have always said that the anti's will never get our guns but they will kill us thru the ammo we use. Well her ya go.

Good thing that I've laid in a good supply. I see huge profits in the black market sales of ammunition in our future.

I don't know who to believe; others say lead is largely recycled and closing the plant will have little impact on ammo prices or supply.
DHS needs ammo too, why cut off their own supply?

I'll have to research this further. But, if this does indeed impact ammo supply, then we are giving China -- arguably our greatest potential foreign threat -- control over our ammo supply. Despite what they've already horded, what does that do for national defense? I thought obull$hit was sworn to defend this country.
Foreign policy is a chess game and ovomit just gave our queen away.
This is another example of how obuttforbrains is willing to destroy American industry in order to advance his political agenda --- just like the coal industry.

Un-knot yer knickers. This is raw just dug out of the ground refinery that's closing. Think of all the lead-acid batteries to be recycled... And realize most bullets come from them…not from just mined ore.

Ammo reps I know say that only about 10% is recycled lead as it is much harder to deal with the impurities and they prefer virgin lead. Also lead from batteries is by EPA definition hazardous material and is predominately recycled into car batteries. Also the chemical formulation of the lead mixture in batteries is VASTLY DIFFERENT than the formulation for bullets.

Like the rest of you, I certainly hope this ammo issue straightens out. It's gone on far too long and seems more and more a permanent problem for us. Remember that our government was behind this. Remember who led the charge. Vote. This is obviously a potentially permanent situation designed to control the people.

Buy muzzle loaders boys and girls. Clinging to my bible and my guns, my Manlicher / Carcano being my new favorite.

Funny but the truth is that muzzleloading components are already being effected. I waited 10 months for a percussion cap order. Bullets and lead balls have also seen price jumps and mild shortages. Powder is still available but this will change too. Stock up.

Might be a good time to stop by all the tire shops in town and for a few bucks in beer money they will probably give you all the wheel weights you can carry....
I hand load but never got into making bullets for fear I would dump a load of molten lead in my lap but if lead gets outlawed by Obamakong I may have to get little Nemo a fire suit and get to casting....

Bullet casters I know use wheel weights all the time and are smart enough not to fool with using old battery lead. Supply can be short if they are reusable on another vehicle.

Having a Medical Physics background, I stocked up on rolled lead used in x-ray room walls...,very soft pure lead. I molded my own lead balls for many years for hunting and competitive muzzleloading. Still have a good amount stored for just this kind of scenario. I think I'll take a tally and get it reorganized sometime. Wheel weights are not very pure, but for modern smokeless bullets the lead may not need to be as pure as it needs to for black powder round balls. I don't really know about that.

Some wheel lead has a tendency to be too hard and needs some alloys to soften it up a bit.
The answer is copper plated, high density plastic or gold core.

valid point...maybe. But I'm not just angry about the ammo shortage but the destruction of free enterprise and the loss of precious jobs....those displaced workers can no longer afford ammo at any price. Ironic.

Great news, Bawanna. I heard on the news this morning that Obummer is heading to Dallas to hype his healthcare program. I sure hope that he get a warm reception.

I've cast round and maxi balls from wheel weight lead and they load and shoot just fine from my T/C Hawkin.

If you start comparing the weight of ball to ball, you may notice an inconsistency vs using pure lead. You could get some that match weight, but in the long run, if you are molding a hundred or so, you will see variances. I weigh every ball and get them where they need to be or they go back in the pot. That's with pure lead.

My lead toys I've collected over the decades are getting scared. They know where lead bullits came from years ago.
I set them up in battle formation and let them watch the The Patriot movie with me. They cried when they saw their cousins being melted. However, they cheered loudly when they saw they were being poured into musket balls. Yes, my Lead Soldiers are Patriots period

Economics. A couple of ammo reps told me that 22LR is the lowest profit margin in ammunition and is the most troublesome line to get quality out of. So low profit/pain in the ass manufacturing and there you go.
Both reps said it will be a very long time before 22LR availability returns to pre panic levels IF IT EVER DOES. Emphasis theirs.

That figures....When I bought my M&P .22 the shop had a shelf full of American Eagle .22LR for cheap but I figured I could always buy it later....Story of my life....

Follow the shooting ranges, who/where do they recycle... That will lead you to the lead and the Brass;)

Those Barnes DO expand nice. Good mushroom! It may be the way of the future for bullets. It will be a very expensive replacement for lead.
