View Full Version : New (Used) CW9 Range Report
Hi all,
New member here. I just got back from the maiden trip for my new to me CW9.
It was pretty boring actually. I put 50 rds of 115 gr ball through it with no function issues at all. I released the slide with the slide stop and also by racking the slide. Both worked fine.
All rounds were fired at 7 yds on a B27 type target. Slow fire I was able to keep all in the "X" ring, Rapid fire, I was able to keep all in the 9 ring with the exception of one flyer.
My initial impression is that it seems to be a decent little pistol for my CCW needs. Recoil was much milder than I expected, not much muzzle flip at all. The sights are okay, but I would prefer a wider rear notch and thinner front. If I decide to keep it, I will certainly put on a tritium font. The trigger will take some getting used to. Size might be a challenge for me due to the larger size of my hands...I don't have much real estate to grab on to. My trigger finger also doesn't have much room to operate either, especially using a two hand grip.
A final observation; the magazine feed lips are pretty sharp...I'm sure this comes as no surprise to those of you who have more experience with them.
Anyway, that's it. I look forward to some more range time before reaching final judgement.

U don't shave with the magazine lips, Gilette is the way to go . there mag lips u will getused to them very fast, or u will ultimately bleed to death. the sights are indeed OK but again that is why there are numerous different kinds out there for te cw9. Kahrs triggers are simply the smoothest on the market. the long travel is there for a reson and u will soon adjust to it. IMO don't expect one hole groups unless u shoot only one shot.
I shoot terrible with my PMJ9 and I have alot of rounds through it. It is what it is.

Actually, at 7 yds I do expect small groups...at least in the inch range. From what I saw today, I think it's do-able...when I get better accustomed to the trigger. :D

hope u achieve that. Its doable but again most can't do it. The trigger system is looooong but smooth. If u can shoot qa wheel gun accuratly DA, then the kahr shouldbe a no brainer.

You can do it. Just takes some practice. My time with my Kahrs has greatly improved my trigger control with any firearm. Once you master that long pull, you should be able to shoot anything well. Last weekend's IDPA safety officer was impressed when I cleared his stage one handed. You can do it. Some young pup at our range chuckled when I pasted two 2inch targets and ran them out to 7 yards. I won a buck off him hitting both bulls in two shots. You can do it. Welcome.

+1. It helps if you've had a lot of DA revolver time.

Thanks guys. I don't have much time on DA revolvers but I do have 20 years teaching and shooting the Beretta M9 which has a long DA trigger. Compared to that gun the Kahr feels very light. My main challenge is figuring out my grip and trigger finger placement due to its small size.

many of us revolver guys place the trigger in the first finger joint instead of using the pad. maybe that will be helpful. good shootin...

Yeah that's pretty much what I wound up doing today.

Good sage. New here as well. Learning Kahr. Bought a 2 yr old CW9 on Tuesday. Read manual, figgered out how to take it down, troublesome at first. It was filthy. I think the previous owner didn't know. Will shoot Sat. The trigger, while delightfully smooth, will take a little getting used to by me. I'm not a previous revolver DA guy, but I understand what we have here. Have high hopes and have ordered extra mags and stuff from Midway. My first attempt at deep cover CCW, perfectly legal here in AZ, but not my first firearm by any stretch. It's obvious that Kahr's are not good for beginners.

I don't know if I'd say that. If they get proper instruction and have never shot any other type handgun (trigger) I think they'd get along fine.
Anyway, I'm taking mine for another run tomorrow.
Hope you have good luck with yours

Thanks. My observations are only that the Kahr engineers went to some novel ideas to make a firearm better fit it's role, somewhat different than other more common designs. Just a little trickery involved when living with 'em is all. However, day 3? No doubt I'll learn more.
Well, another 50 trouble free rounds today.
Learning to run the trigger fast is going to be the main challenge...short stroked it twice!!!

First joint. That's the same way you do with a revolver. The trigger is what I most like about the Kahr. I have been shooting revolvers since the 70's. To me the Kahr has a very smooth revolver trigger.

People have different sized hands and in my case, it isn't pulling the trigger, it is releasing it far enough to reset that I will have to work on. Twice during rapid fire I had this come up.
