Hello All
I am a new owner of a CM9 and just registered here. I wanted to say hello and I've been very busy reading the stickies and watching the videos.
I was never a fan of Kahrs before because I could never get the slide stops to work. They were just too stiff and I guess I am too weak handed. While I liked they way they felt in my hand I just figured they werent the gun for me.
I'm a long term Glock guy and was looking for something smaller than my G26 in 9mm. I checked out a bunch:
- Ruger LC9 - hated the trigger
- S&W M&P Shield - nice but there wasn't enough savings in size
- Beretta Nano - Didn't fit my hand well
- Kahr PM9 - couldn't work the slide stop. The sales guy actually hurt himself when he finally got it released.
Finally I found a NIB CM9 and believe it or not I was able to work the slide. I guess this one was fondled a lot. Felt good in my hand so I made the purchase.
Now I just need to clean it up and then take it to the range for its first trial.
I ordered a Hogue Handall Jr for it as i'm guessing the aggressive checkering will irritate my hand during a range session.
Well back to reading.
So far I've found the information on this site extremely informative.
Thanks
Well started off with a Bang. I just realized I put this in the wrong forum. ...sorry

Welcome!
And for what it's worth, the slide stop is supposed to be difficult to release if the magazine is empty. Kahr designed it that way.

Welcome to the forum!
Slide stop... you didn't mention if this was on a loaded magazine or an empty. You ran across a designed feature not an issue. The slide stop/magazine interface is designed in such a way to be nearly impossible to drop the slide on an empty magazine, as these firearms are designed to be carry guns they wanted a feature that let you know that you were attempting to drop the slide on an empty mag. If it drops easily on an empty mag then something is wrong in either the slide stop or the mag and you should find out what that issue is and have it fixed (may be as simple as replacing the follower in the mag) because it may prevent the slide from locking back on empty.
Kahr operators manual. Page 15 second half starts with the info on the slide stop release. Really not much there except it does state that the slide "release" is designed in such a way that it is difficult to operate on an empty mag, simply drop the mag or insert a loaded mag and it becomes easy to operate. My guess is the sales guy didn't know this either and many of them do not as they do not read and memorize every manual.

As for the agressive "checkering", I would agree that it is quite aggressive and I sanded on the wifes CW9 to make it less so. Just rounded em off a bit. I did install a Handall JR for my benefit later.

Racin,
I did not know that. Yes it was on an empty Mag. Well I haven't finished reading the owners manual yet. But I did pick up some non-chlorinated brake cleaner :)

Welcome and have a good time here. Lot's of knowledge and laughs. As for the aggressive checkering, many of us use a bicycle inner tube. Makes for an easier draw also. Kahrs are tight when new. Don't be afraid to shoot the heck out of it and it will loosen up.
Be sure to look over the stickys in the New Members area of the forum, especially jocko's prep and wintrout's newcomer welcome. Many lessons learned are addressed there.

Thanks everyone,
I'll be working through Jocko's prep work tonight (hopefully). Imagine I have shyed away from Kahrs all this time because of the difficulty engaging the slide release on an empty magazine and not one salesperson from 3 different stores knew about this design feature, all of which could have easily been put to rest by loading the mag with a few snap caps.
Who knew? Well I hope to hit the range this weekend.

I hadn't a clue either, and I do not recall reading that in the manual until I got here...
The manual also says not to "slingshot" the slide. Mention it here and you will find guys that never had issue with their Kahrs and slingshotting and guys whose Kahrs lossened up a bit after a few hundred rounds and some whose Kahrs still wont slingshot for crap after a couple thousand rounds. Every now and again I have a submarine when trying to slingshot and if yours gives you issue there is a fix that can be found on this website.
I installed the Handall Jr on the wifes CW9 as I find the grip a tad thin for my comfort and she has no issue with it. In fact I prefer the steel framed K9 over the poly framed models and even there the grip is a touch thin for my comfort. I aquired wooden grips that solved that issue for me but the original grip screws are short... I have aquired new screws but now these are long.. gonna get after them with a file one of these days and then decide if I want to ship them off to the grip meister for checkering.
By the way Bawanna is the grip meister here and I have a couple examples of his work.

JGIORD, Welcome aboard. As you can see this forum has a lot of fun, but there is always
great info available.
Another option to release the slide is to just drop the mag. then release the slide. That way you don't have to have the snap caps always available.
Personally, when I don't have any bullets or snap caps in the gun I gently let the slide forward, I don't let it slam. I have heard arguments on both sides but I'm erring on the side of caution.

Well, you're off to a good start. You bought the right gun, read all of the stickies and for the most part managed to avoid Jocko. Yer doin good, kid.
If yer gun gets the hiccups let us know. We'll straighten it out. Your gun can be loaded using the sling shot method once it's broken in. You have to employ the proper slingshot technique. Your hand can't ride the slide. See the Video.

Almost forgot. Karh's slides are notoriously hard to operated until the gun is broken in.
I have some physical issues and it took 200 rounds before I could "always" operate the slide, and 400 rounds before I could disassemble and reassemble (tight spring) the gun without help. But now there is never an issue.

RANGE REPORT:
OK I followed Jocko's prep instructions to the letter, I even needed some quick clarification which he provided instantly. The only thing I didn't do was sand down the follower or mag lips.
Went to the range and put through:
200 rounds Fiocchi 115gr FMJ
50 rounds American Eagle 115gr FMJ
50 rounds Federal Premium Hydra Shok 124gr JHP
I'm happy to report that the only issue I had was 1 nose dive using the 7 round extended mag and I blame user error on that because I think I let my hand ride the slide when chambering the round. The gun ate and ejected everything without issue. I used the recommended slide stop to chamber rounds and did not try to sling shot, but it did successfully load the round at home when I tried it.
I put the 300 rounds through the gun in less than an hour. I ran the gun hard to the point that the slide got too hot to touch. I wanted to see what the gun could do.
I was very impressed at how manageable the recoil was. I think my G26 may have as much if not more kick than this little CM9
It was also extremely accurate, better than I am capable of. I was even shooting out to 50' (30' is my normal range) and I still considered my shooting to be combat affective.
Came home and cleaned my CM9 following Jocko's instructions and it now resides on my hip. I really like this little gun!!! :)
I wish I had discovered Kahr earlier or at least understood the hard slide stop when the mag is emptied, it might have saved me a ton of money in trial and error buying and selling.
On a side note, yes this thing is extremely tight and I had difficulty getting the slide back, the slide stop out and even the recoil spring was much tighter than I have experienced in any other gun. But i'm now getting it down and becoming more confident and comfortable disassembling and reassembling this little guy.
Thank you all for your help.

Great report and glad you're enjoying your pistol. It will loosen up. My two CW40s have over 1,100 rounds each and hand rack smooth as butter, even doing it slowly and riding the slide closed.
