I recently picked up a K40 in a trade and found that the trigger pull was very smooth. I recall years ago thinking about buying a Kahr but didn't because of the terrible trigger. This one has no stacking, no grittiness, just a dead smooth pull that is very nice.
My son-in-law is a LEO and has a K40 which he has put many round through. He bought it back in the 90s. The pull on his K40 is terrible. It stacks and also has a definite 'hitch' just before it releases the striker. He tried mine out and told me he'd like to buy it if/when I decide to sell it.
Did Kahr ever release various versions of its triggers on the K40?

Not that I am aware. There might be something wrong with your son-in-laws gun. Your new one sounds like the norm.

I've read some references to an 'elite' trigger. What is that?

Early on Kahr had a relationship with the NYPD and they required an extra long trigger pull...by about 1/8 inch. So early K9s came with that NYPD trigger. All other Kahrs, including the K40 came with the regular, shorter trigger. Kahr also came out with an "elite" K9 with the shorter trigger = the "elite trigger". At some point NYPD insisted on an even heavier trigger too and Kahr told them to stick it and separated ways. After then, all Kahrs came with the same trigger...the elite trigger. You can still see an elite trigger conversion advertised on the Kahr website but that's just in case you have an older NYPD pistol. Not a stretch as Kahrs last forever.
Bottom line, both of your K40s should have the shorter trigger and both should be smooth. That's why I suspect there is something wrong with your son-in-laws gun. Take the grips off and inspect for burrs or rough spots. Clean and grease the trigger bar including where it rubs the inside of the grip and make sure the spring is installed correctly. Make sure there's no gunk built up in the trigger mechanism and the striker cam area. Also blow out the striker channel with brake cleaner or an aerosol gun cleaner. There's a clean out hole. I always follow that with a quick spritz with rem-oil but some debate that last recommendation. Dry fire it a bunch and see if that helps.

have the elite trigerexcept Most early Model K9 which wasmade for the NYPD and if u had the orignal box it would be marked NYPD.
OK what is the difference??
NYPD trigger has 1/2" trigger travel
Elite Trigger has 3/8" trigger travel.
no other changes in the gun
All K40 had eliete trigger
Just sayin

Thank you for the history. I'll get my SIL's pistol and see what's going on inside. He has the box it came in so thanks for the tip re: NYPD.

You are welcome. Just to be clear, There were no NYPD K40s...only K9s. So your SIL should have the same elite trigger as you. Let us know what you find in there. ;)

I'd do as b4uqzme suggested and look close at the trigger bar/spring etc. If it's really that bad I'd not hesitate to contact Kahr. Their relationship with NY is long over and nobody loves NY no more anyhow but they still love cops.
Make sure they know it's an LE gun and it should go to the front of the line.
If it's not smooth as can be have them make it so.
