My CW40 is causing sideways rips or tears in the primers. It's like the firing pin is not retracting soon enough before the spent round is ejecting. This happens to every round, but they still fire and eject fine. Any thoughts?

That's normal and I think it's even mentioned in the manual. I call it primer smear. Your actually right there's a lot happening in a small space very quickly and the striker is dragging across the primer as the case is on the way out.
Don't hurt a thing, no issues reloading them and they go bang every time.

Your owners manual says "tear drop" primer smear is normal. Check it out there.

I have found reloading that the brand of the primer cause the mark on the primer to change. federal so soft the strike looks very different from cci or wolf.
