Picked up my new K40 two weeks ago and haven't been able to get to the range...
Until today!:D

Since the holiday insanity is finally over, and I am off work until the 2nd, I am heading out in a few hours to give the .40 a go.

Reports to follow...

Boy are you going to love it. The Hogue grips are great and I don't understand why they don't use them on the MK series.

Let us know how it went.

So...first trip to the range with the K40 yesterday. Also brought my Colt Commander 1911 for comparison, (and because I love to shoot it)

I set up using standard 25 yard slow fire pistol targets, placed out at 24 feet. At that range I can easily keep my 1911 all in the black.

It only took a couple magazines to realize that I really like shooting this gun. The recoil was very controllable and it felt very comfortable in my hand. Not near as controllable as my 1911, but I expected that. Accuracy was nowhere near as good as the 1911, but again, I expected that. At least I did keep them all on the paper.:p Initially, I was shooting down and right, but as I became more familiar with the trigger, this improved greatly and my groups got tighter.

I had cleaned and lubed the K40 per the sticky here. And it operated very well. I put 100 rounds through it yesterday, 50 180 FMJs, and 50 165 FMJs, without a single malfunction. No feed errors, no ejection errors, no magazine issues...all good!:) Heck, even my 1911 had one FTE.

I didn't have time to try the one box of handloads I built, but I will next time.

My one and only complaint is loading the magazines. After that hundred rounds my fingers were done. I bought a magazine loader that same afternoon...call me a wimp, but that's the way it is.

(I also bought a Sig P238, but that's for a different thread;))

Good luck with your new pistol! I love my K40. You''l probably start to "experiment" a little if your like me, I've gone to wood grips, back to the stock rubber, and now back to wood again. Mine had factory night sights that were getting a little dim (also my eyesight is not that good) so right now the slide is off to XS sights to get new "Big dots" installed. Good shooting, Rob.

I'm told "real men do not use loaders";) I use a loader:p

ENJOY:D:D

Thanks all! Going back to the range tomorrow to finish the "break in," although it sure doesn't seem to need it.

I ordered a set of wood grips from Kahr before Christmas, but they are on back order.

I think you'll find that shooting a DA gun such as the K40 will take a while to really get used to, but you will learn it and your accuracy will tighten right up. I was very surprised to find I can shoot the K40 quite accurately, and over time I've gotten a good bit faster with it, too.

I'd say that for me at least an even bigger learning experience was learning how best to use the weak hand, and building up strength there to allow the strong hand to relax a bit more and do its trigger thing without death grip. I think my weak hand (and forearm) had to "take a more active role", and it has benefited me in shooting the G29, too.

Anyway, I'm fairly sure you'll love that gun even more as time goes on--it's hard for me to imagine a better or more shootable compact 40SW. Congrats and enjoy!

keep an eye on the right side grip. If the screws get alittle loose, it can effect the alignment of the trigger bar. That right side grip up by the tip has a peace of metal inserted behind that grip where the trigger bar rides. I would put a tad of grease on the inside of that grip on that metal plate.

Be damn careful u do not bump tat grip in that area or indeed it will break off that top, as that is the most fragile part of that gip. Some guys here put a small O ring on the grips screws even to keep um tight. Do not get any type of cleaning solvents on thse fine grips or ur finish is history..

If it helps...
I am well past my middle 50s, I've owned Harleys in the past, one for 20+ years, have a Triumph Trophy touring bike and a BMW R bike. The crotch rocket hurts after a few hours and is mostly used for track days. :D

In order to keep the grips tight to the frame at the top, I recommend loosening the bottom screws...tightening the uppers until snug...then re tightening the lowers. That should help keep those upper tabs from breaking.

You were correct, BB. Still not as accurate as I am with my 1911, but getting better.
Went to the range this past Monday and saw a significant improvement in my groups.
Part of it may be it is fully broken in, (360 rounds), but mostly I am sure it is improvement on my part.

Shot this at 25 feet, (yes feet, not yards). 18 rounds with a couple of flyers.

I am sure it is not as good as some of you Annie Oakleys shoot, but I'll take it.:)

Just an update. The K40 continues to impress. I've put just under 400 rounds though it and it keeps getting better.
I can put 6 rounds in a 2" circle at 25 feet with a little concentration...and it hasn't had a malfunction since I got it. Even my reloads have worked great.:D
