I heard it sucks really bad. I ended up getting my wife a big refurbished Lap Top so it would have 7 on it and not 8.
I guess new isn't always better.

The link I posted has a download that turns it back to Windows 7 which isnt bad.
I'm just afraid of messing it up with updates so I dont get them.
:o
When Win 8 came out I rushed to get one of the last Sony Z series laptops...with Win 7 pro. I already had one....this was for wife. These are our keyboard and mouse staples. Tablets are Apple. Next gen laptop/desktop for us...in a few years....will also most likely be ios/apple.

Win 8 is just Win 7 in a new wrapper...I've got it on one of my PCs and it works just fine.
It does boot up way faster than any of my Win 7 machines...:)

I received a MS Surface Pro 2 tablet for Christmas with windows 8.1 on it, was very awkward to begin with but after a few days I really like it. Just takes a bit to get accustom to the new interface. Very fast start up. The Surface Pro 2 has a I-5 processor and can run any program that I could run on my laptop but with much better battery life and in small tablet form factor, I am really happy with it.

I miss XP Pro .... I still have irreplaceable legacy s/w designed for 95/98 and keep an old IBM laptop available when that s/w is needed. I still think windoze7 sucks.

been using Win8 now for about 3 months. It is a little different but all in all works great. In time we use more of the features.
I remember when Windows first came out around 95, the world hated it and wanted to just keep using DOS....

I solved my Windows problems 6 years ago. It was easy, I bought a Mac. I still have the same Mac, still runs as good as the day I bought it. Once you go Mac, you never go back.

Posting this with linux, which I've used for about 15 years. There is a learning curve for folks brought up on MS Windows or Apple, but there are benefits: all software is free and downloadable, it's very stable, and it's quite immune to viruses. For the tinkerers among us, it would be worth checking out, IMNSHO.

Nothing but a new thing. I just install vNext before or just after it hits the pavement and move forward from there. Been on Win 8 since the release candidate dropped, no complaints, no praises...its just an OS.

I've never liked Windows.
When my Windows 7 laptop kicked the bucket I replaced it with a Chromebook.
It goes from cold start to logged on to the interned in eight seconds flat.
For an internet browser, which is all I use it for, it's truly amazing.
No need for third party firewalls, antivirus or other crap.
It's been lightning fast with zero problems so far.
The screen is a little small.
But I plugged it into a 26" wide screen high def flat monitor - LOL!
I was shocked that Google could produce such a stable OS right out of the box?
But then I read that Google may have cheated.
It appears that the Chrome operating system is actually Linux-based!
Now it makes sense...

Your life just got easier. "Classic Shell"
This download will allow you to set your computers display to virtually any version of MS operating system you like. If you have call in support for your computer troubles you need to tell them you are using this software so they can match it in their system. Easy to turn on and off if you choose.

I've been thrilled with Windows 7, it's been the best and most stable Windows version I've ever used, going back to 3.1. XP was the worst, Vista was almost as bad. My work computer is slowly dying so I may be stuck with 8.

If you have a touchscreen it is bearable. Barely. If you are using a keyboard and mouse you are scrooged.
I specifically order my current puter with W7.

The update for Win 8 makes it 8.1 and it has some user friendly options for us old guys.

I started building and using computers over thirty years ago. First DOS, then Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, XP, and now 7. I beta tested Vista as a MS Partner, but never cared for it. I started using 7 about six months before it was generally available, and won't change until I have to do so. MS sent me a copy of 8 several months before it's introduction, but, IMO, it won't replace 7. It might be fine on a touch system, which is what it was designed for, but it's not for me on my desktop or laptop.
BTW, I've installed and used Linux on systems I built for other people, but it's not for me. I've never had a Mac and never wanted one.

O'Dell. I am not a computer person at all. My machine was going so last April I bought a new desktop with Win8. Honestly, installing "Classic Shell" made the screen look exactly like my old XP. I have gradually changed the XP shell toggle and moved it up to Win 7. Now with Win 8.1 I have gone totally to the new 8.1 OS, along with office 2013.
I have turned off the swipe features and use it totally with a mouse. Even for me it is not really that much of an issue. If I get stumped finding something I just Google what I need to do and problem solved in a couple of seconds.

Windows 7 is a much stripped down Vista. They removed all the extraneous garbage the no one used and made the programs a free download for anyone who wanted it. Therefore, 7 is a lot smaller and faster than Vista. I even had to download a mail program, but that's fine, because it was one less piece of clutter in the OS for someone who didn't need it.
I understand from MS that new apps were added to 8, like the swipe features that many may use, but not me. Like I said, I have 8 on a disc, but I prefer the bare-bones concept of 7.
I use Pale Moon for a browser, for the same reason. It's a stripped down version of FireFox, and looks and works the same, but is faster.

To each his own. There are plenty of word processors available as a free download. Personally, I use notepad to send my copy to my publishers.

Hey, there, Mr. O'Dell!
I just installed Pale Moon and migrated various items from FireFox as an experiment.
So far, so good . . .
Thank you for calling Pale Moon to my attention, sir! :)

Try LibreOffice, which is the free (as in free beer and free speech) software version of OpenOffice. The web site should detect your operating system so you are offered the correct version:

True it is and the Mac operating system is a Unix descendent, putting Microsoft as the outlier (not unix-like). Most of us in the linux community are leery of Google watching our every keystroke, so stay away from Chrome.
BTW, linux and the other unix-like operating systems (BSD, etc.) are everywhere: iPhones, Android phones, most routers, most servers, imbedded computers (think cars and a whole lot more), "big iron" financial systems and so on. Unix is quite older than DOS/Windows (dates from the early 1970s) and linux was started in 1991 as a personal computer clone of Unix, which at that time had no versions that could run on an IBM PC.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it. I'm kind of a computer dinosaur so this change really threw me for a loop.
Had a lightening strike (even with surge protector) and fried the hard drive. Neighbors son replaced the hard drive and did the "upgrade" to Win 7 without asking.
Again, appreciate the help.

Ahh Unix. I was just thinking about applications like Wings the other day and how glitch free they were. They hardly took any processing power or memory either.

I got a tutorial from my 12yo nephew last weekend so I'm feeling a lot better about windows 8. ;)
It doesn't make much sense though if you don't have a touch screen (at least as I understand from my very limited experience).
I just hope they don't go changing it back as soon as I finally get it figured out.

That's my if it ain't broke don't fix it issue with Win 8. Our desktop and high end laptops are all non-touchscreen. Tablet is non-Win. I kinda wish we'd started the switch to Apple a while back but changing infrastructures is expensive and inconvenient. Probably gonna bite the bullet next time around but that will be a few years and hopefully I'll be dead by then.

But I agree with your "ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy. I was running an old windows vista machine until I finally physically broke it. It was still running fine. But just as a first impression, I'm OK with this windows 8 machine. The apple products definitely align/coordinate better with one another but I'm still a windows/android user.

I needed a new laptop & after years of frustration with Windows, both at home & work, I happily dropped the extra coin for a MacBook Pro. I'm one of those people that doesn't mind spending the extra $ on something that works as advertised & saves me unnecessary headaches. Microsoft can suck the big one!

I build my own PC's and load whatever I want I it. I hear Windows 8 really isn't that bad with the new update to 8.1. I normally rush right out to buy the latest Windows OS. I bought 95, 98, 2000, 7 all practically on the day they were released. I still have no desire really to get Windows 8, all those desktop tweaks can all be done in the Windows registry.

When it was time for a new computer I spent five minutes with Windows 8 and that was enough to send me to Apple for a Mac Mini, something I should have done years ago.
