Not exactly true. Increased production eliminated a lot of jobs. One CNC machinist can turn out in an hour what it took a dozen machinists turned out in a day, if not more. Many jobs were lost because the products are no longer made. They have been replaced with better less expensive products. We used to have dial telephones. You could use them to make a call. We now have cell phones that will do everything but mow your lawn and I hear that they are working on a cell phone that can. We have a world economy. If we expect to sell our products overseas we have to be willing to buy products from overseas. Trade is a two way street. We left the industrial revolution and entered the age of information. You now need to improve your skills or be left behind. And that's the way it is.

I completely agree with muggs.
I love to buy American when I can, but refuse to buy products that are inferior just because they are American made.
Cars for instance, wouldn't buy a foreign truck but hate compact American cars. Colbalt, cavaliers, focus and many others are garbage compared to Toyota, Honda and Subaru compact cars.
Science and technology have made life easier but also eliminated many manufacturing jobs.

Well said Muggsy. You are 100% correct. However there is one thing we could do that would assure that we had more jobs than we could fill. That thing is to pass the FairTax. With corporate taxes gone, companies and industries from all over the world would be clambering to set up factories and distribution centers in the US. You would have to hide under your bed to avoid a job.

I agree as well, except that I WOULD buy a (so called) foreign truck. The Tundra and Tacoma's are great trucks (though I'd rather have a genuine Hilux…), besides, most "American" trucks aren't really entirely "American" anymore anyway.

That depends on if there was an American or foreign worker behind the counter...:p

I prefer to buy US made but we do live in a global economy. Compete or die.

I've never owned a foreign car, never will. But honestly, with guns country of origin isn't a criteria in making a purchase decision. I'd say roughly half of my guns are US made, the rest are European origin.

It's not that the trucks are foreign it's that I prefer Ford trucks. Also love the ford Mustang. Other than that I wouldn't buy Ford. Love Cadillacs also!

For the first 18 years of my life the Ford Motor Company put a roof over my head, clothes on my back, shoes on my feet and food in my belly. Four of my family members depend on me buying a Ford to keep their pensions coming to them. You will never see me driving a rice burner or a vehicle made by Obama Motors.
With trucks I've long been Chevy. Our cars for the last 20 years have also been American Made....Marysville Hondas

A bit confused by the "Obama Motors" reference. If you are referring to to the bailout see below:
Funds received Paid back to date
GM 52 Billion Over 30 Billion
Chrysler 11 Billion 10 Billion
Ford 7 Billion 100 Million

+1 for Muggs and O'Dell on the Fair Tax. Other than the cost and quality of labor, what's stopping them from making cell phones in America? Are Chinese workers really better than Americans? If so, why does the law of supply and demand not make them more expensive? The Chinese government's manipulation of their currency would be a major reason, and the main reason why this "global economy" is not a level playing field. If we were all free countries competing on the same terms then it would be a true global economy. As it is, China has tricked us like crack dealers into buying their stuff exclusively.

Exactly. The vid addresses the FACT that there are lost jobs in the US because it is cheaper to produce products elsewhere. Muggs is correct in that there are other reasons....(ie, production efficiency, etc...). But those reasons do not make the vid totally wrong. The FACT is that US jobs are lost to cheaper labor in other countries. Can't argue that as false by merely making an additional reason for lost jobs. There are several reason...the vid addresses one.
I also agree that I won't buy American Made if it is inferior at a higher expense. It makes no sense. So you might argue, then why say "Buy American Guns!". It was a vid posted to increase awareness that ONE reason US jobs are lost is due to cheaper labor in other countries. That's all. Nothing magic about it. Just a vid. That said, US guns are the best! IMO

I don't believe that Ford took the bailout money, but I could be wrong. GM and Chryster did. Ford did accept 5.9 billion in government backed loans for retooling, but Ford repaid that debt.

I buy American whenever I can, but it's getting difficult to find American made products. America's biggest disadvantage to foreign competition comes from our own government through regulation and taxation. Obama is blaming the republicans for failing to extend unemployment compensation to workers who lost jobs through no fault of their own. (?) The fact that they lost their jobs is largely his fault.
The government through the EPA has cost many people their jobs. Union wages and work rules have cost people their jobs. Raises in the minimum wage have cost people their jobs. High corporate taxes have cost people jobs. Obama wants those of you who are still working to pay for those who don't or won't. The solution to the problem as I see it is to shrink the size of government and to get the government out of everyone's pocket. But that's just one man's opinion.

Other than a Rossi R92 rifle I bought last year, all of my firearms are American made. My thought is, why support the economy of a country by buying their firearms related products when they don't allow their own citizens to "keep and bear arms". Vehicles are another matter. In 1982 I bought a new Ford Ranger (the compact pickup) from a dealership that was owned by a client of the company I worked for at the time. Over the course of 18 months, that truck absolutely fell apart from mild highway driving and two different dealership shops couldn't keep it together under warranty. It got traded in December of 83 for a Datsun/Nissan 4x4 and I never looked back. In 30 years of buying Nissan vehicles for both me and mrs surv, not one has been in the shop for any factory warranty needs.
Between the union demands and the government idiocy (osha and epa for example) we can't compete with most other countries. I'm really beginning to believe that labor cost (relative to the economics of the specific country of production) is NOT the main difference if production. Also, the current trend of a throw away society doesn't lend itself to building quality, durable products. Manufacturers are obviously in business to sell as many widgets as possible, so they tend to find the shortest life span of a product that the consumer will accept as "normal" so they can either sell them another of the same in a relatively short time, or entice them with the "new improved" model in an even shorter time. Mrs surv and I are both driving 2004 model Nissans (longest we have ever kept any vehicle), and spending about $600-800 per year on maintenance. Pretty cheap transportation at this point.
As for guns ..... I'll stick to my guns .... American made and RKBA honored.

ps ... a correction on my "inventory" ... I do still have an Italian made P. Beretta AL2 shotgun.

Then there's that "gray area": is it 100% Made In America? I too buy Made In America when I can, but as a designer, I know that many parts are sourced from vendors who bought from Asian manufacturers. That special component deep inside your latest Made In America pistol was sourced in Taiwan. Ok, maybe I'm splitting hairs. Just say'in.
We produce plenty of high quality, kick ass products in this country and our productivity is high, but its not a level playing field.

Only gun I own that's not American made is an Italian made Uberti .45 single action pistol and for the money I paid it's a very nice looking and shooting gun and the only reason I went with them is I couldn't afford a real Colt or USFA which are really nice but spendy.....
I like to buy American when I can but it's sometimes hard to know where the internal parts are made or where the final assembly takes place for instance some Chevrolet Silverados are assembled in Mexico and Toyota's are assembled in America so which is American made?....
I 100% agree that enacting a Fair Tax would be the best thing to happen to the American economy yet but unfortunately the Government and the IRS are all about controlling the Sheeple so thats never going to happen....
Speaking of the IRS one thing I would really like to see is a heavy tax levy placed on U.S. Corporations that off shore tech jobs that could be done here...Sure they are going to pay more in salary and benefits to an American worker but that worker pays income taxes on their salary and in turn has money to spend on goods and services bought and paid for here which improves the American economy in the long run...
It really GALLS me to call an 800 number for a U.S. company to get help with a product and you get some guy in India who's real name is Kamistashnitch but says Halo dis is Bob....Then you can't understand a damn thing the dude is saying and he asks you the same question over and over until you want to scream and reach through the phone line and strangle him to death!!!.....Those jobs used to be in America and damn well still should be or the company that hired "Bob" should have to pay some kind of tax to make up for the difference in what they are paying that poor slob and what they should be paying an American worker because that company doesn't care about their customers or their quality of service.....

I'm not surprised because few people ever heard about it and the press to my knowledge never reported it. The funds were separate from the much publicised money paid to GM and Chrysler and came from the Energy Dept. for some reason. GM and Chrysler were cut off from borrowing from the private sector because of the bankruptcy, but Ford wasn't. They borrowed heavily and mortgaged nearly all their assets, including the "Blue Oval". Ford has been working hard to release the mortgages, as they should, and that's why little of the government 'loan' has been addressed.
I am in no way criticizing Ford, because they handled a difficult situation quite well, and are well on their way to clearing the debts. Unfortunately GM and Chrysler didn't have the same options. Since all three companies are doing well in their markets, I think all will pay off all or most of the loans eventually.

I own or have owned guns made in Germany, Italy, Israel, Turkey and Brazil among others along with vehicles made in Japan. Buying cars made in Mexico with an American name I sometimes do. I buy American quite often especially Ruger , Kahr and S&W. What I really hate to do is to buy anything Chinese made. Taiwan is quite acceptable.

Buying American is one of the reasons I chose a Kahr.
Always try to buy USA 1st. Next is ABC (Anywhere But China). Have an old Volvo but that was when USA car quality was poor and no airbags. Could never stand the idea of buying a military type firearm from any country that may have have used it against my Dad in WW11 or any other war against any of our troops. NO AK's or older bolt action German or Japanese military. I am not perfect. I have a 42 year old Walther PP bought new for $80=2 weeks wages and a 35 year old Franchi 12 ga. auto. Also a Rossi copy of a Winchester pump .22 Everything else Remington Savage Colt Ruger Kahr H&R Marlin S&W KelTec

I can remember when I was a youngster and worke din the family business and wen the transistor radios (pocket ones) first came out. They were all made back then in Japan with a sticker on them that said made in Japan. I was kinda oung to understand but I certinly remember one ol timer who fought against the japs in the war and he was a great customer. When he seen we had a big line of transistor radios, he ask to see one as he was interested in one but when he turned it around and seen that sticker on it, he slammed it down and walked out. It was along time before he came back in. I understand that fully today back then I didn't. German products faired no better bck then either, U best not have ever owned a german bmw, mercedes, back then. today though as we aqll know, it is a changing world. Take away the ABC stuff out of ll these stores, be they wal mart. lowes, menards, Target and u could fit the American made products in the back of a semi trailer. Ask some of these stores if it is Americna made and they look at u like ur some kind of fokking nut.
One of our bigger store in the mall in the area sold nutting but leather jackets. I believe it was called Wilson leathers.. good quality ones to. I once went in there and said show me an American made leather jacket that u sell, for I am intereted. THEY COULDN'T do it. Then the ol sales pitch omes on . One told me the rerason they don't sell American leathe rproducts is that the foregn cattle are not around barbed wire so the hides don't get scarred up like they do in America. WTF. There might indeed be a tad of truth to that even but WTF how stupid do they thik we are..
